Would you consider a Rolex Submariner as a daily beater?

Hi community, I am in search of a dive watch.

I will not make a purchase for status, so a dive watch that costs $300 or a Submariner that costs $10k plus doesn't make any difference to me. I buy what I like.

My question is, where do you wear a Submariner? Is it a daily beater? For special occasions?

I am trying to wrap my mind around if I purchase a Submariner, how and where I will wear it.

Yes. If I had the chance to own a Sub I’d wear the heck out of it, scratches be damned. Watches are what you make them, not what other tell you they are. Go forth and enjoy!

·

Yes. I’m tired of getting expensive watches and I baby them and I say NoMOre!! Wear them watchbox Queens!! Rough em up!! Wear it everywhere!! Also one friendly advice about watches… No one cares about them!! It’s only a few Nutty folks like us do and most times don’t!!

·

No. My Sub is worth the same as my entire collection combined and 3x the value of my car. I'm happy to wear my Sealander as a daily and a Casioak as a beater.

I also think its not the best daily.

·

If it is your only watch then wear it everywhere. Unless you're in London I suppose.

I am lucky enough to rotate all sorts of watches in my collection that I can keep special pieces for special occasions, or if I have the mood for them. However, when I was younger, my Omega Smp300 Bond watch was worn everywhere as it was my first, proper luxury watch. Back then I already thought Tissot was entry level swiss.

·

Definetly a daily watch, especially if money is not an issue

·

Just get a Certina DS Action Diver. Same looks for a fraction of the price from a brand with its own heritage.

·

I wear all my watches with the exception of a handfull that I stored away when we renovated our brownstone during the pandemic, need to shake my lethargy to collect them from my bank box. You should be mindful of service costs of certain watches: my Breitling Navitimer 1461 is a watch that I enjoy wearing more than others might have been bumped or caught some hard surface rushing through customs security one year resulted in a 3k cad repair bill!

·

If I spend that kind of money I'm wearing it all the damn time

·

No. But it is more a question of a dive watch in general not working for me as a daily beater.

·

No I don't believe the sub should be a daily beater

An old pre ceramic sub, maybe

But the modern sub has too many shiny surfaces to be anything but a piece of jewelry. Which is fine. But as a piece of jewelry/flex, id probably only wear it as a "I'm in a mood and want to wear a flashy watch" mood. This is why I think the GMT Master is a better modern Rolex, the different colors bring out more flash

Ask 10 different watch enthusiasts and get 10 different answers.

Personally I would wear it as a daily, however I wouldn't intentionally try and get it beat up. Just like any tool I own, I use them and care for them.

·

I don’t have a Sub, but I use my SMP as my beater. I love it and I feel like the watch appreciates being used properly rather than being babied. If that makes sense..

·

Sub would be an outstanding daily watch choice

If you’re looking for a submariner style watch or general dive watch in a similar style then I’d go down the vintage or retro reissue route have a look for the following:

  1. Tudor Submariner

  2. Heuer Professional 1000

  3. Tudor Black bay

  4. Certina DS action diver

  5. Seiko 62mas or captain Willard

Some are vintage some are modern reissues. Also if you want none subby-esque watches then have a look at:

  1. Omega planet ocean

  2. Longines legend diver

  3. Oris Aquis

  4. Glashutte Original SEAQ (my personal exit watch / grail)

These are just main brands! Microbrands are also really good in this area too! 😎

Good point, I feel that my ceramic diver is too shiny for daily wear, but I know 3 non watch enthusiast friends that wear their ceramic subs as dailies in very different settings. Boy, do they pull it off well. I’ve never thought it looked out of place. They all seem to wear their sub pretty loose too 🤔I’m not sure if it works because of the watch or the type of personality that these individuals have.

If you're committed to the watch, yes, wear the hell out of it - no matter what it is, or how much it cost - and make it your own. But if you aren't committed to it, and you think you might wear it for a few years, alongside some other watches, but can imagine selling them all in time, and trying something new, then beating the hell out of it makes no sense.

So it really depends on your intentions in a broader sense.

·

I only have two watches, so my Sub is my daily and my GMT-Master II on jubilee when I want something a bit smarter.

If I'm in a dodgy area, I'll put it in my pocket.

·

I wear my Rolex, one being a Sub no different than I wear any of my other watches (except in safety situations). They were made to handle it. They can take it, trust me. From motorbikes, to fishing, to farm, to travel, to the office and meeting under a cuff. As long as you are okay with some scratches and scuffs on it, the Sub is okay😉

I've always felt that rolexes would be happiest as objects being used as the watch you wear to go gardening with. Although the economics of it make little sense in case something goes wrong. And that there are many watches out there that can do 80% of what a rolex does at a much smaller price point. The curse of being a store of value, I guess.

It makes perfect sense. My Seamaster 300 gets treated the same way and I am more attached to it as a result. It has the same scars my hands do.

Absolutely it is the perfect daily beater. Of course it’s a very expensive watch but it’s a watch for wearing and will be a trusted companion through thick and thin. The first few scratches might hurt like the first grey hair you notice but then you’ll enjoy growing old together. If you have the opportunity go for the quality and enjoy it my firend

I think Subs look better the more wear they have on them. That being said, Deep Blue makes some great divers for $2-300usd.

Apologies for my ignorance, which is the deep blue divers?

·

If you like it and can afford it, wear it as your daily beater. It is always better to see these worn and enjoyed by one of us instead of sitting in a safe or being flipped ("unworn") by a grey market dealer.

Since you don't buy for status, take a look around and see if there are other similar watches you like just as much that don't have the significant (for a tool watch) Rolex premium attached to them.

Then you can split daily (beater) time between 2 (or maybe even 3+) watches meaning even in the (very) unlikely event that you have a serious mishap, you'll still have a really nice "beater" to wear.

Carbon fibre tough ….

Just depends your definition. My daily and my beater are two different watches, one to stand the daily wear, the other for things like hiking, manual work etc

·

That is what they were originally designed for.

·

Whatever floats your boat. I used to use a Daytona as a daily and a Explorer 2 after. Now I rarely wear them.

·

Daily.

It is designed to be a daily. I just dont think you can find one for 10k..but I get your point.Enjoy it
