Daniel Wellington

Calendar day 21 of 24 ๐ŸŽ… About ten years ago something strange happened. Suddenly a whole bunch of people were spotted wearing something that only can described as a classical timepiece with a big C. This watch have been an entrywatch for many a watchnerd and have influenced the watch industry in a visible way. They also put nato-straps on the map (arguably). Cheap with lazy design? Or genius simplicity that brought people back to wearing watches?

I agree on that point. Yet I think it was an important piece in the recent watch renaissanceย

I just canโ€™tโ€ฆ. Not only canโ€™t I cope with the logo but also that I may need to explain to people why its back to frontโ€ฆ..I just canโ€™t ๐Ÿ˜•

What @ChronoGuy said. ย The only good thing about it, like manure, encourage budding watch bros/sis to grow.

Just take a 100ยฃ note and light a cigar with it. That money will better better spent this way than it is by buyng DW. What an absolute piece ofโ€ฆ

I used to like the minimalist design of DW until i was introduced to brands like #junghans , #alangeandsohne ย and #sinn. Now the dials of DW just looks off ballance and a little bit empty, its as if the markers and hands doesnt fit together and the face is too big for them. If you want minimalist design, done well and for an equivilant price as a DW i would look at #sternglas, their quartz options sell for just a little bit more than the DW's and they are a better representation of the minimalist watch style IMO.

Minimalist design is in my opinion one of the hardest things to pull off well.ย

But other than that i have nothing against DW, they might be a bit pricy for what you get, but so are other brands.

NATO straps were a Bond thing, long before backward D turned up.

But was it DW that pushed you towards other watches? And did they help putting the likes of JungHans back on the map? In that case they deserve credit.

True, but they was not widely used before DW.

Guys, some positive thinking here.ย

Let's assume 1% of DW buyers saw the light, then bought a cheap 7S26 movement Seiko, followed by a Tissot Gentleman or an Hamilton. Their souls have been saved !

ยท

If this was a beef Wellington and Gordon Ramsey tried it, he would puke it up and bash it so hard itโ€˜ll make satan be like โ€œIโ€™m not messing with this guyโ€œย

This brand has become so synonymous with overpriced, low quality fashion watch trash. It's so easy to use them as an example of what not to buy. But I have to admit, they had a successful formula that made an impact to the watch industry, arguably for the better.

Around 5 or so years ago, they took over social media. The DW watches had a consistent and attention-grabbing design: Minimalist dress watches on a NATO strap. They looked sporty, fun, and classic all at the same time.ย

Their product photos were done very well too. They were crisp and high quality, it created a (false) sense of luxury and brand credibility.

But their biggest feat IMO, is creating a demand for these bare minimalist watches despite the popularity of smartwatches. This was before the luxury watch craze during the pandemic! In contrast, even the mighty Fossil group took a hit during the smartwatch boom.

So there. DW are objectively low quality trash watches with zero horological heritage. Yet they managed to develop a very recognizable design. Also, their absurd success as a fashion watch brand has indirectly helped to educate many people about the watch industry, and created new watch enthusiasts as a result.

IMO a successful yet overrated watch brand that is peddling horologically irrelevant watches, but is somehow leading watch enthusiasts to the path to horological enlightenment. โœจ

That is simply incorrect. ย

ยท

They definitely were not cheap price for what you get.

ยท

They are overpriced junk but I canโ€™t call them irrelevant because they shape the watch market outside the enthusiast sphere.ย

Outside the watchcircle?

I am still proud of the fact that I first heard of this brand when in a pen shop in Boston and, with zero context and before I was an "enthusiast" of any sort, I was able to discern that they were nothing special whatsoever, and certainly not worth the price, through the display case

Bromfield?

I did a lot of window shopping for watches on Bromfield St. in the late 70's.

You are right sir! I think it was in 2016 that I was there and they had DW on display.

Wear what you wanna wear and buy what you wanna buy, yeah?ย

And business is business when you create a product, whatever the quality level, and some people buy it.ย

But when you start serving huge BS in your marketing, which @benswatchclub emphasizes on, then that changes the whole picture.ย

ยท

Yes, DW is overpriced, over marketed, false-marketed, and boring. IMHO.

That being said, I will give it to them that they got a lot of people, at least around me, into watches. For me, Fossil was the brand that sparked my interest into this world, and to this day, I give Fossil a pass for that reason.
