What are your “GADA” watches?

A “GADA” (go anywhere, do anything) watch is an interesting idea for many enthusiasts. We imagine this platonic ideal of a watch: one that can do it all, both aesthetically and functionally. Elegant and rugged, purpose-built and versatile.

As I’m sure is true for many of us, I love the idea of a GADA watch, but I also love having a collection of watches (and collecting more)! Having one watch as my “companion” for everything is a romantic idea, but I get so much joy from putting different watches on. How do you all strike a balance?

The one watch per week thing seems to be a healthy approach for wearing. Definitely makes me appreciate pieces more.

My GADA watches are my Citizen eco drive chronographs. They look nice enough to wear out, and they are practical and rugged enough for working in. Most all of my watches are field watch based, so practicality and usefulness are paramount. So all my watches are chosen for maximum usefulness, whether it’s a Timex, Bertucci, Militado, or Citizen.

Man, that traska silver dial 👌🏼so nice.

Currently using my Seiko SSK003 as my “GADA”. It’s not perfect but I’ve really been enjoying it. Easy to put on and just forget about. Time zone tracking helps with my work, looks nice enough, added a new lumed 12-hr bezel so I can use it as a kitchen timer (number X 5 = elapsed minutes) or 3rd time zone, either way!

Railmaster is my dream GADA…hoping to bring one home to the collection before the end of the year.

Nice 5 choices. That Seiko though for me is so-so. The hand just don't do it for me. Your Hyperion would have been my 5th choice.

Here's my 5 GADA daily homage beaters.

  1. Steeldive 1957 NTTD

  2. Phylida Speedmaster

  3. Loreo Submariner

  4. Tisell Submersible No Date

  5. Pagani Design GMT Batman

My GADA's that get written are Atiler Wan Perception & Explorer.

Others that are not GADA get worn but have to be switched out for sport / holidays / DIY.... some due to age and others are water proof.

I don't really believe in the GADA watch. It's a good concept for the regular person, but is generally opposite to the ideals of a collector. I think the most GADA watch I have is the CW C63 GMT. Four hands, 150m wr, sw200, great finish on the case.

When I started collecting my vision was those scenes in movies like Iron Man where he opens a draw to reveal 20 watches and plucks one to wear for the day or occasion. That still guides me now. I don't stress about how often watches get worn and just wear what I want that day. By definition a collection is a group of objects larger than reasonably practical. Baseball card collectors don't actually play games with their cards, stamp collectors don't use them to mail letters, but watch collectors seem to be determined that watches that don't get worn have no value. I wear all my watches, but not all of them often. But they all have a place in, and are a part of, my collection.

My AD 2023! Its an homage, but I love It because I can wear It without worries!

No, it is not. You are either a normal person, have one watch, and take that one anywhere anyway. Or, you are a watch nut and the very idea of a GADA is a threat to your addiction. At the end it becomes just another watch category of which you desperately need an example of, completely defeating the idea behind the acronym.
