Podcasts?

Rant and a question.

I’ve been a voracious consumer of watch-related podcasts for the last 7 or 8 years, but I’m having some trouble finding content these days.  Not to say there isn’t more than ever, but the tone has changed.

What started out as a couple of people chatting about interesting, often obscure, watches has reduced the quality content and added a variable combination of:

·        Gushing over new releases

·        Thinly (if at all) veiled marketing (e.g., “This new Oris is amazing!  By the way, we have it in our shop.”, etc.), and

·        Discussions of how cool it is to be a watch journalist (e.g., “Rolex gave me the best swag at the last event”, “Hublot took us to the best restaurant”, etc.).

I’m not trying to throw shade; no doubt this shift corresponds to what the analytics show listeners want.  The people who put those together seem genuinely nice, interesting, and clearly love watches, so I don’t at all begrudge them the fact the industry has grown to the point where they can have careers.  I think that’s great.

I’m still going to listen to and quite enjoy the standard options, but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for something a little more back to basics.

I’m certainly guilty of gushing, myself, but I want some “I think that watch sucks, don’t buy it” content that isn’t constrained by fear of lost sponsorships or a brand getting butt-hurt and not sharing samples.

Ideas?

As my daughter and her friends say, "I'm done, thanks for coming to my Ted talk."

There is nothing in the watch world as funny as these two cracking joke after joke after joke about all the same watches the channel typically gushes over in the "normal" Watchfinder videos:

That's good stuff, thanks.

"Hmm, adventurine.  I'd like to have a kitchen worktop made of adventurine."  Amazing

A little context goes a long way in understanding the motivation and content coming from influencers. The struggle for likes and follows leads into sponsorships and merch sales all the while trying to retain credibility. I watch most of them knowing where they are coming from and still enjoying the entertainment.

I may start a podcast where I do nothing but complain about the stupid watches that I have bought that don't work.  I might bring in an expert on pin pallets to lend a hand in explaining why they are all garbage.  Perhaps, also an investment watch expert:

"Would this watch make a good investment?

@Omeganut : No.

How about this one?

No.

But, this person said that this has gone up by 400% this year...

That person is a moron.  Go ahead, just light fire to your money"

That WC passed on this idea is a mystery to me.

I’d totally listen to a WatchCrunch podcast featuring the usual curmudgeons from the peanut gallery! 😁

I'd listen.  Maybe not patreon tier, yet.

Of the podcasts that I listen to, I’d say Wrist Cheese Radio is closest to what you’re describing.

·

Not podcasts, but in the same spirit ... I really enjoy You're Terrific on YouTube.

In the 4 years that I've been consuming watch related content on YouTube, I've noticed a similar trend. I really enjoy finding channels that provide truly meaningful content rather than thinly veiled marketing hype, but that seems to be getting harder and harder to do.

agree , I am starting to just follow small channels that are like hobbys for people as now days the whole model is just geared towards generating traffic online.

·

I’m all for starting/joining a watch podcast. A watchcrunch podcast would be awesome.

I got into this rabbit hole almost exactly 12 months ago and since I am homebound (used to travel for work for 25 years prior to pandemic), watched quite a few watch videos....the last couple of months I feel I have reached the end of the watch internet....just like you.  Watchcrunch is a breath of fresh air but I totally agree with you.  I know what watches I will buy - or can buy - over the next couple of years (if my money tree grows, which is not cooperating lately), so there is a bit of "boredom" with all the watch channels lately.  It is so obvious which channels are "pushing" products, some of which I can tolerate and some I cannot.

However, I look at my watches and it keeps me happy.  So the hobby has brought me quite a bit of joy the last few months and I love the watches (modest collection) I have.  I have learned to stop watching YT videos within a minute or so, if I miss something earth shattering so be it.

I love watching Bill on Youtube.  His channel is https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJe2_IV7kWi6udyH5r5tEFQ

Also, one of the hosts is @ brodinkee on Instagram. The podcast is about as honest as the meme account. It seems pretty honest and non-commercial.

I find myself listening to the same podcasts. Although I enjoy all of these — they have become a bit stale at times… maybe I just need a breather.

  • The Grey Nato
  • Worn & Wound
  • Hodinkee Radio
  • OT: The Podcast

I also enjoy a few that I was introduced by those podcasts. They discuss watches at times, but it’s not the focus of the shows.

  • Blamo! (Probably my favorite)
  • Standard H

I'll add Scottish Watches, 40 and 20, and Two Broke Watch Snobs to this list.

The old Time4APint episodes are really good; I wish he was still making them.
