Purchase Influencers

As much as we may not want to believe that we can be influenced into making purchasing decisions, there are too many factors to ignore. Here are just a few that come to mind:

  • Style & Design

  • Trends & Fashion

  • Brand Reputation

  • Functionality

  • Materials & Build Quality

  • Movement Type

  • Price Range

  • Emotional Connection

  • Collectability & Investment

  • Consumer Reviews & Recommendations

  • Influencers & Marketing

Influencers & Marketing is the one I want to broach today. All of us on Watch Crunch are "influencers" in some form or fashion. We give recommendations, have discussions about likes/dislikes and post WRUW images.

I enjoy scrolling through the WRUW posts and seeing watches and or brands that I am not familiar with. Today I saw a WRUW post from @Magstime. He was wearing a Cincinnatus Centurion Filed Watch (burgundy) from the Cincinnati Watch Company. The burgundy textured dial is impressive with the raised indices at 12, 3, 6 and 9 appearing larger than the other numerals. The dial reminded me of a wax seal (pretty cool)!

Google got me to the watch and I saw the price and the black variant. And it comes in 40mm which is perfect for me...I will be putting this one on my short list.

It got me thinking, how often are we influenced by other Crunchers in making purchasing decisions?

What watch have you been influenced to purchase based on a WC post/WRUW? Let's hear the stories and see the pics.

@Edge168n influenced this purchase heavily lol…

@Max did a review on Santos Dumont a while back that actually got me to ck WatchCrunch and purchase the watch…

And much much more hahaha!!

Both are great looking. The Santos, what can you say it's 🔥!

·

Thanks for the shout out! The black dial version is a beaut.

In terms of influence, I couldn’t agree more. My Casio Duro, GS, Tudor and Colareb purchases were as a direct result of the commentary on WC.

More importantly, direct advice from Crunchers and learning from the experiences of others helped me avoid some purchases, saving me more than a few bucks.

·

I learned a long time ago that what may be desirable and coveted for you does not necessarily mean the same for me. If that were the case every watch on Earth would be a Rolex clone or homage. Sure, opinions and reviews matter but at the end of the day the only opinion that matters is yours.

More savings for more watches 🥳🍻

·

Yeah the more you look at it, you will see strands and textures of a bamboo… GS has ways to lure you in to look deeper and the more you get to know it more and the craftsmanship that goes to those details my 🤯 and just fall in love with it more… ok… I said too much 😊

·

I put more stock in a review or advice from a fellow Cruncher or other real world owner than any YouTube reviewer or commercial review for obvious reasons.

Agreed. But how do you not get influenced in some way, either by pictures, reviews, recommendations, etc.? Everyone believes they don't have biases, but we all have unconscious biases.

My son-in-law works for Pinterest and he manages the GM account along with others. What he shows and explains to me about the deep marketing analytics and strategy (no double-secret probation stuff) is scary at best. As much as I hate marketing I can't stop all of the images, etc. from having some impact on me.

You never know, I’m a certified horologist and of all the stinkin awesome watch brands today, I just happen to enjoy the cheapest questionable quality brand on Earth, Vostok! Why? You tell me and we’ll both know. A Russian made inaccurate mostly mechanical watch with an acrylic crystal and some Soviet military junk, jets ships, on the dial? Maybe the connection, Vostoks are not just put on your wrist, they need winding, regulating and you never know when they will fail. And they usually do. But that’s just me and in this World today we all need to be connected to something or someone.

I get it...unique watches are great! Admittedly I have no answers, hence the question(s).

Another Soko family member! Our Ven diagram of watches is nuts.

I totally agree one is always influenced by others, in my case and because of my age nothing had to do with the internet or you tube, I grew up looking at the wrists of uncles, cousins, friends, family members, brothers-in-law, etc. watches and brands like Rolex, Cartier, IWC, Tissot and Omega and that was what influenced me completely

Me getting into vintage was largely influenced by @Aurelian @Whitesalmon @MrBloke, and many other Crunchers who shared their vintage pieces on WRUW. What further pushed me was seeing the beautiful restorative work by @GasWorks of many a vintage Seiko, and consequently hearing rave reviews from @Deeperblue @TheSharperTheBetter and @Guvnor64 about the wonderful vintage timepieces they got from him.

That's why, my first vintage, a May 1970 Seiko DX 6106C-8240, also came from @GasWorks himself...

@Aurelian, @Whitesalmon and @MrBloke all have some serious vintage peices. I would have never considered my vintage Vulcain if it weren't for @Whitesalmon. By the way your Seiko looks beautiful. The dial looks like Egyptian Papyrus paper or linen a pattern. 👍

I started following @SurferJohn some time ago. I saw the Pam 1085 in Vegas and loved the watch. Saw other images of John's Panerai on wrist which essentially gave me the nudge.

its just a killer watch!!

Image

I love my Panerai more than any other watch I own, find the right one and it’s gold. This is my 4th Panerai, probably the final one.

I like Japanese anything, the food is amazing.

Ohh man!! You just made me hungry lol

·

I thought a main reason people are on WC is for ideas of what to buy. I bought a Lorier after several people wrote about it.

Good idea, my friend! 🍻 And perhaps, those of us who have also acquired a masterful restoration by @GasWorks can comment on your post, so that a gallery of sorts is created. 👏🏽👍🏼

Psychedelic toad!! After getting hypnotized, Lick it! 😜

Let’s all influence our super influenceable Mr. Bunz:

@Ichibunz needs this! House -pffft. Who needs it?

Image
·

Admittedly a good review from a trusted source or collector friend means a lot.

But I don’t think I’m too influenceable?

Probably why my collection is a bit off the mainstream. The fact Rolex omega tag breitling etc are what collectors should own I think makes me like them less.

Example: My work colleagues think this seiko LX is a generic department store watch … not a 6k USD Lux diver like a Seamaster or some Rolexes , and I don’t mind! 😊

Image

Nobody else notices, but When light hits the indices I see rainbows 🌈

Image

The magic bezel of ‘cermet’ (ceramic with metal blended in) reflects like still water at night, a black mirror.

(That’s my reflection in it below!)

Image

It’s in theory to big for me, but is insanely comfy and light Ti despite its size. Spring drive so bonkers smooth and accurate. … yada yada yada

I can go on, but point is that I fell for the little details of this watch despite the lack of a review and never seeing it on any other collectors wrist. 🤷‍♂️

·

I would have never guessed that price tag either. I have in some ways been influenced by marketing, movies etc. Example, being a James Bond fan and remember seeing the Omega SMP for the first time. I told myself I would own one when I could afford the watch. I realized much later how innovative the watch was and now I'm fortunate enough to have a few of my grails. Love your collection. 👍🏽
