A Worthwhile Investment or Outdated Relic? ๐Ÿค”

Hey guys,

So, I stumbled upon a lingering legend in the watch realm โ€“ the Seiko SKX J model. Is it still on the market for around โ‚ฌ800 / $800... What's your take on this? Is it still a savvy move or a nostalgic wallet-drainer?

On one hand, it's like owning a piece of horological history, right? The SKX is practically a "mythical creature" in the watch world. But, let's face it, the movement is a bit dated, and there's an orchestra of alternatives serenading us from the watch market shelves.

So, here's the million-dollar question (well, โ‚ฌ800 / $800 question): In your esteemed opinion, is snagging an SKX J still a worthwhile plunge into the vintage abyss, or should we be eyeing those fresh-faced alternatives instead? Are we witnessing the last hurrah of an iconic timepiece, or is it time to let the SKX gracefully bow out?

Let's get the discussion ticking! ๐Ÿ”โŒš What say you?

Thinking the same thing .... its such an iconic piece tho

ยท

Not at that price!!

Had a couple decades ago, the appeal of them at the time was very much the low price for a full spec dive watch.

Take away that price & in a modern context it's just an overpriced low spec old watch.

They really weren't that great back then, just cheap and readily available.

For that money you can get far better & arguably more iconic watches.

ยท

Not worth it.

ยท

I think thatโ€™s way too much $

ยท

I think you can get a better price BUT this is for sure one of the most iconic watches. Seiko is just about the only company that came up with original designs that didnโ€™t look like Rolex that you would actually want to own. My opinion only ๐ŸŒˆ

ยท

Tbh not worth the price but I can see why it is priced in that manner. Finding a new SKX currently is very difficult and especially considering it is discontinued for a few years already hence the premium. If you want to spend that amount on a nostalgic piece with a great history and you think it is worth it then get one.

But if you are after an iconic Seiko with modern specs, there are much more cheaper options.

ยท

Agree with sentiments above. Depends what you are buying: the icon or a Seiko diver.

Discontinued icons cost more than the sum of their parts unfortunately, but youโ€™re buying the legend.

For what itโ€™s worth, I have the J version of the SKX007, and love it ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

ยท

I think it depends on how you view your collection. If it is, in part, museum to watches gone by, this definitely has a place in watch history. Is it worth the money to fill that place in your collection?

If you are looking for a practical day-to-day timepiece, Iโ€™d say there are better, more affordable options. My $0.02

ยท

I agree with what others have said but would like to add one more nugget.

In my opinion the SKX became an icon because of what you got for $200-300. As soon as it inflated above $500 the element that made it so special disappeared.

Butโ€ฆ nothing about watch collecting is based on logic so if you can afford it and want the watch badly enough, just get it and wear it in good health. ๐Ÿป

ยท

I feel your pain. I like the SKX too but eventually went with a 5KX (On sale) because of the recent crazy SKX prices.

Thought about it for a year before deciding it wasn't worth it.

ยท

It is an iconic watch, I don't think anyone would disagree with that, but it is not worth over paying for.

ยท

If it were me Iโ€™d get a Long Island Watch Co. Islander version of the SKX, drilled lugs, sapphire crystal, ceramic (sometimes sapphire) bezel insert, newer better NH36 that can hack and be hand wound. And it costs way less, youโ€™ll be paying around $300 instead of โ‚ฌ750

But thatโ€™s just my 2ยข

ยท

The watch is iconic there is no doubt about it! I own two SKXs and I love them.

The price in Creation Watches is very high for me. You can find a better deal on Ebay or Chrono24 I think. A price around 450 - 500$ is fair but this is just my opinion. If you want it and can afford the price then go for it (especially if you don't have to pay duty and extra VAT on top of it. Good luck ๐Ÿ‘

I love my SKX. But I built mine. It doesn't really bother me that it isn't OG because of upgraded specs it has and the massive community of modders I consider myself a part of.

That said, to buy an OG is only going to matter to you and anyone you explain it to, no one else will care or know. I totally get it if you want one, but I'd check Ebay. And I wouldn't spend more than $300. IMO, I would look for one with an OG dial, bezel insert, caseback, but with an upgraded NH35 hacking movement and a sapphire crystal. That will bring the value up to date.

I found one here that doesn't come with an updated movement, but is much more cheaper.

Good luck friend! Also, if your willing to spend $800 on a Seiko SKX, you might look into commissioning someone(modder) to build you one. You'd spend less and get to piece it together yourself. Just do your research. IDK if @LumeShot still does it, but you can ask. Dude is amazing.

I sold my SKX009 last year at sorry a healthy profit margin but it wasn't that healthy. Maybe I should of held off a bit longer lol.

Anyway I think it depends the person. If your collector and the purchase is all about the SKX's place horological history it maybe worth the $ to you. However if buying it to for function and use the value is certainly not there. I realized I'm more the latter thus why I sold mine.

ยท

Not worth it, while it's iconic, it's very outdated with its basic movement

ยท

Let it go. At that price it is not a viable price. Leave the (recent) past in the past

ยท

Not worth it anymore, a watch without hacking seconds hand or handwinding capability is not worth more than $400 dollars. Get the Willard 6105B instead. A watch with better specs and actual historical significance than simply being the first name brand mechanical/automatic watch most young enthusiasts got.

ยท

โ‚ฌ800???

My advice? Abort, abort, abort. There's nostalgia and there gouging. Yeesh, the watches have been sitting in inventory for, oh, I'd say 7-8 years at the most (IIRC Seiko discontinued the line in 2018) and they pricing it on par with a Presage?

Let it go, my friend. Go look at Islanders if you want to scratch that itch. Better movement, better glass, better strap/bracelet for half the price. If you want to go cheaper go for a Steeldive.

ยท

I do think itโ€™s worth it if youโ€™re buying what it represents: a time when seiko made an affordable โ€˜realโ€™ diving watch. If youโ€™re buying it to have an affordable dive watch, there are much better options.

They made too many of them for it to ever sky rocket in value. So, if you do really want one, as long as you donโ€™t want NOS with box and papers, I think you will be able get into them in the price range listed for many years to come.

ยท

Relic. Not worth this price

ยท

Wow, i can not believe how much they go for now. I got mine from there for ยฃ250 back in 2019. The movement is great it just does not have manual wind or hacking but who really cares about that!!

I had to get one though as it is an will always be a legend to us mere mortals.

Follow my WRUW for my Seiko a day keeps the watch snobs away ๐Ÿ˜€

ยท

I wouldn't buy it. Better watches out there for the money

ยท

Buy a turtle instead

ยท

depends on why you are buying it. If you want an SKX then that's what you want... I don't think it's THAT wild for a new one.

ยท

I just sold my new and unworn SKX175 (itโ€™s the SKX009 - pepsi bezel for the USA market) to a good friend. I couldnโ€™t find a proper price online for it. I knew I took a lost, but I also knew that this friend will take care of it. He has been a fan of SKX009 forever. And now, he ticked off a watch from his bucket list.

ยท

It's a good watch. The 7S26 is reliable movement.

But for that price, I would pass. In my eyes, the only way that this could become a worse deal is if it came with an STD in the box.

Then again, I am an old fart that probably doesn't understand the appeal of the SKX. I'd suggest either waiting for prices to plateau or buying a used example.

Excellent watch, not-so-excellent price.

I really like Seiko, and have 13 of them, all in the price range where the SKX used to dwell. And yes it was a low price for a full spec dive watch, but even given that, the looks of this watch didn't do much for me, and still don't.

ยท

The question is, why are you wanting to buy it? Because when you boil it down, it's an overrated watch that people mention way too much on YouTube. And I say that as a Seiko fan. It was the first automatic for a lot of people, so they do have that special relationship with the watch - but that doesn't mean it was the best watch ever made. Speaking of, it was made in MASSIVE numbers, so it's not rare. People might not sell them often, but do you know how many are out there? Loads. So, for all of this, that price is just silly.

TL;DR? That would be a no from me.

ยท

800 for a J is way to much, not worth. But the K one is around 450, itโ€™s still a bit high but i think itโ€™s worth it
