Three watch collection in three years

I currently own 7 watches, which I intend to keep, but rather than expanding the size of my collection to an unwearable number of affordable or mid-tier watches, I’ve decided to create a core three watch collection over the next three years. Here’s what I’ve decided on (at least for now):

  • Omega Speedmaster Professional (2023)
  • Tudor Pelagos FXD (2024)
  • Cartier Santos de Cartier medium (2025)

What do you think? Good idea? Silly? Am I missing out on too many other great watches, or targeting the wrong watches?

nice strategy. nothing wrong with the choice too. better to choose one watch this year and decide another one next year, just in case something interesting coming up 😂

·

That’s a great plan! Definitely helps pace yourself and enjoy each watch. These are great picks!

·

@Unholy Yes, I am open to the thought that my selection might change over the next three years, but I want to start with an idea of what the collection should look like when complete:

  • Three brands
  • Three dial colors
  • Three sports watches, with one diver, one complication, and one everyday that can be dressed up.

So, if I can hit those three criteria, the selection is open to change.

·

Sounds solid

I am working on a similar plan with almost the exact same watches. I am trying to get to a core of 4 watches with speedy, Santos, Pelagos 39 (Hopefully they will release it in blue), and Explorer. Right now I have all three except the Pelagos, and it will take me probably a year, maybe a bit longer to get my watch fund high enough again to finish up (the Speedy just came in a couple of weeks ago depleting my watch fund)

That’s a solid plan. I would like to do something similar - fewer watches, higher quality.

This is my 3-watch collection for now and forever (a very long time at least). I think most folk would be happier if they had less stuff and higher quality in their life. Do it 😎

Needs more cowbell!  😜

I have to say that if I am successful in my 3 year plan and extend it to a fourth year, the Explorer would be a top choice 2026 addition!

I would break my vows they released the LHD in 39 😜

Nothing wrong with any of those watches. Two icons (#omegaspeedmasterprofessional and #cartiersantos) and a riding star in the #tudorpelagos39)

I’ve been side eyeing those exact first two Grand Seikos you listed as alternatives to the Santos. Also considering Explorer II, but don’t know that I could dress it up appropriately. Most up in the air on the Santos, hence the longer wait on adding it to the collection.

Also on the Pelagos FXD, not sure if I will go with that, the original in blue, or a possible blue in 39.

Speedy, I’ve made up my mind on the 3861 sapphire sand which.

That's a nice trio.  Covers your bases nicely. Couple icons in there, can change up straps when wanting a change.

I'm starting to think about trying to get down to ten. Then my wife is like, you love them all, why do you think you need to do that?

Three isn't doable for me personally.  Six would be the absolute minimum, my three favorite and the three my wife got me.

The Explorer and Santos go together like PB&J

Buy what you love! Those are 3 great options and I am currently doing a similar thing.  The key is if you look at your wrist and love what you see then you did great !

I think it's awesome if you're able to map out a plan for specific watches, and then work to meet that goal. For me personally, the biggest problem would be new watches being introduced that end up throwing the plan out of the window, especially as my tastes evolve and change over time.

FWIW, you mention that your 2025 goal is for the Santos De Cartier Medium, but the photo you included is for the Large version. The Large version has the date, and is available in several different color variants, whereas the Medium is currently only available with the white dial, and does not have a date. I struggled with deciding between the two sizes, especially with the general wisdom seeming to be that Cartier watches have traditionally been smaller. When I tried the large on my 17cm wrist, I felt that it was the perfect size. I opted for the SS black dial version with the ADLC bezel (WSSA0037), as I was concerned that the bezel would be a scratch magnet.

I went to try on the medium at an AD, but they only had the large (and a blue version) which I tried on. It fit, but I felt the medium would be better. i have some time to finalize it though!

Thanks. Those 7 adds a lot of sense why you went with the Omega and Cartier. Not sure about the Tudor though - given you Oris and Seiko ProspX.

I may not keep all seven, I just don’t have intentions to sell them to obtain any new watches. The Seiko ProSpex is actually a land tortoise, so not technically a diver. It’s possible I get rid of the Aquis, but it’s green and my current favorite watch, so I can see where they might have a place in the rotation.

The Ball and Presage are sentimental and aren‘t going anywhere. The G-Shock has its place. The Hamilton and Alpina could leave my collection if I found the right buyer.

I've never actually tried on the medium, since I'm over 800 miles away from the nearest Cartier AD. I had been able to try on the large when another member of the local watch enthusiast group brought his to a get together. Based on the shape of the case, I thought it was a perfect fit for me, so I wasn't concerned with trying the medium. I may have felt differently if the medium had been available in other colorways. I had originally been planning on getting the blue dial WSSA0030, but after seeing the black dial version in person, I fell in love with it. I was also concerned about bezel scratches, since the highly polished SS bezel appears to be a scratch magnet. The black ADLC bezel eliminates that concern.

In any event, best of luck with sticking to your plan. I don't have a Pelagos FXD, but can speak from personal experience that your other two choices are both awesome watches.

Very solid plan! You're going to love the 3861 speedy, it's still my favorite in my collection. I've been eyeing the Santos too, definitely will be going medium for me as a square face takes up more real estate on the wrist.

·

great plan, also thinking alot about this path myself. But the core three are just so hard to choose!

Pelagos FXD I keep fliflopping on. I love it, but do I love it enough?!

I’ve set aside a three-watch collection under lock and key that I intend to give to my son when he’s old enough. (Breitling Avenger GMT 43, Montblanc Tradition 40, and a recent model Rolex Sub Date ceramic.) I wear them once in a while, or wind them up at the very least.  But my personal 3-watch rotation is the MB small seconds and Cartier Tank for work, and the MB Iced Sea for weekends, after hours, pretty much anytime I’m not in the office.  This is been my 3-watch rotation for a couple months now.

Three cracking watches that covers everything

I would break my vows they released the LHD in 39 😜

calls the offices of Montres Tudor SA with news of @mjosamannen will be breaking his vow if they release the LHD in 39mm

So there, either they will be the good guys and not release it or they will the bad guys and release it right quick. 😛

I want that Evolution9 Spring Drive GMT Spring Drive GMT SBGE285. That’s looking like my next GS acquisition. GS dials should be considered gateway drugs. 😅😜 Add lume plus a local jumping hour and I’m game.

Excellent choices however, i’d try to get the FXD first. Ive read rumours that the FXD production wont last long due to the popularity of P39. How true is that? i cant be so sure, but if you really like the FXD, i’ll be more inclined to seek it out first as your other two choices have never been discontinued. good luck!

Thanks for the heads up!  On the FXD, I’ve not quite decided if it has to be that or the traditional blue Pelagos (or an entirely different river). I went to try some on at the AD last week and they had neither. There’s also a chance of the 39 coming out in blue in a year or two, so that would be one I would consider as well.

Bottom line is that I’ve chosen the Speedy pro 3861 sapphire as my anchor to this collection and want to get that one first while I dial in the other two watches. Will keep my eyes out for discontinuation!

I have been on the wait list for 1yr now for the FXD

This is the way. Beautiful choices. I’m at the point where I need to thin the herd.  Appreciate the inspiration.

·

Ditto with the 3-watch collection, I think that's a solid number to have for both balancing variety with frequency of use. One spot will always be reserved for a vintage Omega dress watch I inherited, and another spot is for the ever present Casio digital for when I need to go somewhere not hospitable for fancy jewellery.

·

Thats perfect idea with me I'm just doing it one of each. From entry luxury, basic luxury and luxury.
