I met a REAL LIFE WATCH NERD today, and it might be a problem.

While working with one of my new employees today he asked, “hey is that a land tortoise?”

WOW! No idea people like you and me existed IRL.

We of course struck up a conversation and he has a Seiko 5 diver, a Turtle, and a 62MAS. When he said 62MAS, I knew he was the real deal.

I mentioned some of my watches including the PRX, and he immediately asked if it was quartz or Powermatic 80. This kid (new college grad) knows his stuff.

Now, here’s the problem. This kid works for a guy who works for a guy who works for me. He’s one of a couple hundred folks in my organization, and he ACTUALLY knows how much my watches cost.

Do you think he’ll gossip about the price of my Speedmaster (which no one has ever noticed at work)?

Yeah…I’m super excited to strike up another conversation with him, but ugh! I don’t want to flaunt my relative wealth to my employees.

·

Hahaha, real live story. You will be much trouble if he is your bos bos bos, and he know how much you make.

·

I feel like a gay man in the 1970s that has been yanked out of the closet.

·

Nothing but Invicta from here on out.

Wow, quite the dilemma! If you are the only two watch nerds there, probably not. I have found, at least in my own experience, that us watch nerds learn pretty quickly from yawns, glazed eyes, and slack jaws not to discuss our passion with non-collectors. 🤣

Seriously though, I am in a similar situation, although from the opposite side. I collect at the budget and entry-level tiers for the most part, but I have a couple of friends in Rotary that are also watch nerds, but collect at higher tiers. One has a Breitling Navitimer, among other watches, and the other regularly wears several different Audemars Piguet models. I know how much these watches cost, but I have never discussed it with other Rotary members. First, as I joked above, I have learned only to discuss my collection with interested people, and second, not really my business to discuss how much someone spends on a watch. I might say it is a really nice watch, but I certainly wouldn't think it appropriate to gossip to other members about someone wesring a $25,000 or more watch.

Of course, I do talk watches with them both, and we show each other what we are wearing, and discuss future purchases, collecting, etc.

·

Hah. Start a meetup. Get him on WC. Who cares what you do with your money? Ain’t nobody got time for that shit.

·

Time to get a Casio Illuminator!!!! Hahaha seriously though… my Rolex or FC would rub people the wrong way because of my age all the time. I ended up going for a citizen or SEIKO because people thought they were cheap but I got a high quality good looking watch to go under the radar. It’s good to be conscious on watch decisions depending on your surroundings. Yeah the speedmaster might go great with a outfit today but your helping out with charity stuff later at a church…. Kinda deal.

·

Nah, he’ll be respectful.

·

He's young, he's impressionable, he likes you and your watches. Of course he going to talk.

But don't worry about it. Most people have probably noticed your watches and have an idea they're nice and probably expensive. They're most likely to nice or respectful to mention it or they don't care. I doubt anything will change except you may have gained a new watch friend. Enjoy it.

·

It is a dilemma Jason. I met with recent hires and every now and then someone will notice my watch, usually the day I am wearing a higher end piece. I used to really be concerned, but at this point in my life, I am over it recognizing that after more than two decade career it is okay to have a few nice things. You worked hard for that Speedmaster, it is okay to be proud of it.

·
Okavango

Nah, he’ll be respectful.

He is a cowboy, so I do have that in my favor.

·

Am I the only one still reeling he met a watch need IN THE WILD??? Thats happened to me exactly zero times! 🤣🤣 As for the other stuff, you seem like a pretty understated guy...not like you're flashing Rolex around. Speedys are pretty understated also, one the many things I like about them!

·

Thinking about it differently, you’re giving him something to look up to and aspire for. Especially since he is a junior team member, seeing how successful you are can help inspire and motivate him. I wouldn’t worry much about the gossip, it’s no different when folks tote around several thousand dollar handbags.

·

Enjoy the conversations, and let the kid know you expect him to keep quiet about the value of your watches. He'll probably respect you more now that you have this in common

·

I'm not sure what line of work you're in, but I was able to save up for a Speedy Pro within the first 9 months of my job straight out of college. I'm actually disappointed I don't see the higher-ups in my job sporting high end watch pieces tbh!

·

Everything will be fine but make sure nobody says no when he'll ask for a pay rise !

In the meantime tell him you saved for 13 years for this Speed and from then you only eat bread and potatoes under a bridge. He will think you're crazy to spent that amount of your money in a watch that never been to the moon and be satisfied with sub 1000$ Seiko's

·

Nice frame, Seiko and BlueMoom.

·

If you're his boss's boss's boss, it shouldn't be a surprise to him or other employees at your business that you can afford some nice watches. If you keep your employees happy in general, you shouldn't have to worry about if they're gossiping about your watch collection. If anything your watch collection should be a sign of the business's success and something for your team to aspire to!

·

Don‘t mind. If he is clever, he‘ll talk with you, not tell about you, form a connection to you and progress his career like this.

·

If you have 200 employees, I'm sure they already suspect you don't get a government cheque.

·

I have a similar situation where a few associates (not a college grad thank goodness); but at a different level than me. We both love watches, but there is some stigma at work around being too flashy. I like the fact that we have a humble culture, so how do I balance my and his enthusiasm with more expensive watches?

My approach was to laugh it off if price ever comes up and joke around how this is the last watch we'll buy... this year.

Most other associates don't ask about price because that's kinda crude unless it's out of genuine interest.

·

I say wear what you want and don't worry what people think ,you've earned it and enjoy wearing it ,also if he's new he's not going to discuss watch prices with people he doesn't know .The opposite happened to me

I'm retired and work 2 afternoons in a charity shop in the warehouse moving furniture around, recently I had the opportunity to park at the shop which is in the city centre,so expensive parking so I cycle normally. We had a stand in manager who I've seen a few times and been ignored by her , however this time when she saw my car (Porsche) she wouldn't stop talking to me,I noticed she was wearing a tag F1 so we chatted about watches I was wearing a sterling Fraser £325 ,boy was she surprised when I told her I had rolexes.Goes to say you can't judge a book by its cover

·

He might but they probably know anyway. 😅

Jim Green boots!!

Nailed it!

·

I had a virtual meeting with a chap within my company and noticed he was wearing a submariner- I asked him if he had put it on specifically for the meeting as he would be using a mac which would scratch the fuck out of the bracelet 😂

·

Only if you're lucky

·

Like the way you matched the watch to the outfit

·

He will talk and someone will chop off your hand for that Omega, so he needs to be silenced immediately. I'm sorry, there's no other way. I know a guy if you need one. Good luck.
