Commemorating Japan trip?

Looking for advice! Going on a trip to Japan for the first time and would like to commemorate the trip with a watch purchase. Have been looking at Grand Seiko heritage or Kurono but am open to other suggestions. Price range up to 10k ideally.

Doesn’t get more Japanese than a GS I think, though I am no expert on Japanese watches.

·

GS all the way… if you visit Tokyo, stop by the Seiko building and GS boutique in the Ginza area.

·

Well, Kurono is a no go if you're planning on buying in Japan since they really just do online orders for the most part . . . there is a boutique/showroom though for enthusiasts (but they don't sell watches there). I'd go with GS . . . hit the Seiko Museum and the Seiko boutique complex and go to the Wako GS boutique.

If you want a second (cheaper) watch just for an additional experience in Japan I'd check out some of the Knot boutiques where you can make a customized watch for $500 to $800 or so depending on options.

Go to the GS Shizukuishi studio and get the SBGH283, which is a studio exclusive!

Try these. The Divido are particularly interesting in person.

I would have stopped all other suggestions after this. A thread closer.

Too funny! You know, one day, I am going to take my family to Japan, and make a special trip out to Shizukuishi Studio just to get that watch. If for no other reason than to give my kids something funny to needle me about for the rest of my life! Ha!

"Remember that time dad made us travel for 8 hours by train to go to some watch store???"

·

First of all, WORTH IT. I have been dragged on some colossal let downs while travelling. On my honeymoon, we were in Melbourne for a few days; my wife insisted on seeing the fairy tree in the Fitzroy Gardens. Total f’ing, BS, waste of an afternoon that looked like any gnome section of a Michaels Craft Store. The least I can do is get her on a train to GS and I will still be less than 1/8th away of getting her back for that. I am not bitter.

GS or bust

·

Not in your price range and very different style, but check out Naoya Hida. https://naoyahidawatch.com/?lang=en

·

Forget GS

Buy Credor! and a F84W!

I agree. Minase watches are designed like one of those Japanese wooden puzzle block with every part slotting into another part. It does make for a very nice cyberpunk-ish dress watch.

@Fieldwalker would probably have some sage advice

·

In osaka right now and got this yesterday

I think GS is a good shout - but for an added bonus consider a Tokyo Flash watch - iconic if you want something a bit out there!

While you're out there take 2 more hours to drive to Ryusendo Cave that inspired another GS watch. And why not detour to Lake Suwa on the way back south toward Tokyo and contemplate the waves. Fun for the whole family! haha.

I hear you on being dragged to places like that by the spouse . . . that said . . . my wife dragged me to Gucci Gardens museum/restaurant/boutique in Florence and I gotta say . . . while I may not ever be a Gucci guy that complex won me over for their customer service (wife got stuff of course and I got her a secret Gucci watch that I'll gift her for Christmas) + their food was some of the best I have ever had. Next time we're in Italy I'm dragging my wife back just for the food haha.

100% Grand Seiko. I love the idea of the exclusive model at the shizukuishi factory that @HotWatchChick69 mentioned, I just don’t care for that particular design.

My vote is for anything with the new 9SA5 or 5 day spring drive (forgot the caliber number) in it. Your budget will allow for it, and as a 9SA5 owner I can attest to how awesome it is to have both a gorgeous dial and movement in the same piece.

Then got take a photo of you at the area that inspired that dial 🙂

Yes! And the Seiko museum is around the corner!

·

A country wide Grand Seiko tour! Brilllllllliant! With GS inspired food 😉

·

Check out Mizutani Camera in Ueno. You might find a hidden gem in there.

·

GS

·

Agree with Lord D. Find a used Credor. The quality leaves GS in the dust. Enjoy the hunt... what an adventure 👍😀

·

Check out in Nakano Broadway (Jack Road, Kame-Kichi, Renzu, Watchnian).
