Do you consider where you wear your watches?

Random thought: do yall ever consider where you wear certain brand of watches? I don’t mean due to safety reasons - that’s a whole another conversation. I mean, like if you own a Rolex, like I hope to one day. I keep thinking that it might be in bad taste to wear it at my work (I work in higher ed with a lot of students) or if you worked in a non-profit or anything along those lines - how much do you consider these aspects of watch wearing?

Also, I do think the popularity of certain brands come into play - I could wear a Tudor (or I currently wear my Monta pretty regularly), but I don’t think much of it because I don’t think these brands are as well known to normies. Idk, I’d love to hear you thoughts!

Not usually, because I don’t tend to go to places that are risky. But I did return from a cruise recently, and since I was going a couple of days in advance I brought my Steinhart to wear around San Juan (keeping my Seamaster locked in the hotel safe). My concerns were not founded, because I noticed a strong security presence. Other than this instance, no.

I work in fundraising, so I generally stick with subdued and understated watches to avoid the impression that donations are going to my pockets instead of the cause.

·

I don’t think about where I’m wearing a watch although I do not have any expensive watches. I live in the SF Bay Area and no one ever notices my watch as most are more likely to use an Apple Watch.

·

I'm hoping that anyone who sees my $16 Pobeda, slips a £10 note into my hand.

·

I sold my 41mm Submariner date as I didn't feel safe walking around London with it on my wrist. I now wear my Tudor or Omega, whether it's safer or not who knows. All I do know is that I'm enjoying wearing these compared to the Sub.

·

I don’t wear my Rolex to work simply because it’s too much of a statement that I don’t want to make with clients.

I happily wear my Santos everyday tho and that’s just seen as a pretty office watch. Unfortunately Rolex does have a lot of negative connotations attached to it. I don’t agree with them but I know they are out there.

·

If I'm meeting clients then I wear a very plain and inexpensive watch, like my black Skagen with mesh strap, it Nordgreen Philosopher with blue strap. I don't want them to think they're being overcharged for my time!

There's also a clique of friends we see at events who always put on their matching Rolex, it's like they went to the store the same day and did a bulk buy of OPs. I'll dress down on those days too. Not that they'd know what a VC was, but I'd probably wear one of my Poljot De Luxe. One of the younger guys wears an early 60s Omega which looks very elegant.

I work in home building and I do not wear my two-tone datejust when I am meeting with my teams because I think it is too flashy. I do wear my Seamaster though.

·

I never give it a thought. No one has ever noticed. 🤷

·

I usually will consider the safety of wearing my watch in certain areas, but I don’t find it to be in bad taste to wear luxury watches in different settings like you mentioned. Most people don’t even notice your watch, aren’t aware of the cost of the watch, and at the end of the day it’s something we got with our own money.

Curious to know your thoughts on this though: maybe in the certain settings you mentioned, if that is a concern, it’s best not to wear any watch? For example, if the people around you arent into watches, an inexpensive Seiko dress watch and a JLC master ultra thin look pretty similar and could be perceived as being equally expensive, if that make sense🤔

·

For me it has to match with my outfit and occassion. Since my collection consists of three handers, elegant sports watches in all kind of dial colors, it is not about the brand and genre but about the color and fit. So when my Casio red here fits more than my Rolex in blue, I will go with the Casio. At the end of the day, nobody will recognize the brand anyway and with such a uniformed collection of mine, it is much easier to pick a watch.

Depends on your department. I'd react differently if I see my engineering professor wearing the latest Rolex vs a professor from the business school if you know what I'm saying.

·

Non watch people rarely notice what brand you are wearing anyway. Most folks would assume a big chunky Invicta costs more than a relativly small OP datejust from a casual glance.

·

I work for a paint manufacturer, I am in sales so I’m not getting paint on me much. But I will think about where my day may take me, and not wear my Grand Seiko if I think I’m going to be around wet paint, or if I’m going to be transporting several 5 gallon cans of paint. But other than that, I don’t think about it too much. Nobody really notices the brand of watch I’m wearing.

·

Nope.

Didn't have any true luxury brands, but even if I did would still wear them.

Paying attention to surroundings when traveling and staying in public places does wonders.

Also don't wear the solid gold Patek to the dive bar at 0100.

Most two legged predators like to ambush their prey, so anyone paying attention is a harder target. Why go after the hard target, 99% of the rest are soft and on their phones.

My profession, as well, and I share your sentiment. I daily a Tudor BB36 and also occasionally wear a double branded “Seiko/Grand Seiko” quartz from the mid 00’s. I’ve pondered an Explorer but avoid for the brand association with Rolex, and what that might communicate to donors.

I usually wear them on my wrist.

I wear my watches everywhere. If I worked hard for something and own it I'm going to wear it proudly. That doesn't mean I need to be flashy with it or let everyone know about the watch I'm wearing. No sense in living scared either.

·

I work at an upscale hotel near the beach so it’s not uncommon to see nice watches on property so I do wear my Rolex from time to time but definitely not something I wear everyday. It’s a modern datejust and really shiny, I mostly wear my turdor as it’s all brushed and much more understated. :)

I wear my watch everywhere, I've never given it a second thought. In my experience no one pays enough attention to notice and that's fine by me, I wear my watch for me not for anybody else.

you're over thinking it....just wear the watch you want, that's why you bought it......99% of all people don't even notice your watch and don't give 2 sh*ts about watches

As someone who traveled extensively internationally on business, I would usually wear my least “flashy” watch which was also often least expensive. Not so much because of fear of theft as much as draw attention to myself. In many parts of the world, Americans are not so popular and the “gray man” concept of blending in with the locals or at least not standing out was paramount for your personal safety. Even today in some major US cities, crime is high and best to not stand out with anything flashy and keep your head on a swivel.

·

I agree. I love Rolex watches (non-precious metals), but most of them time, they make a negative statement about the wearer - show-off, power-player, attention-seeker etc.

I have given up and wear mostly Tudors nowadays. My Rolex are not intentionally safe-queens, but baggage limits their time in daylight.

FWIW, I 100% agree that we should all wear what we enjoy and what that we do make these purchases with our own money and so what we decide should not be dictated by anyone or anything other than our preference.

I also think that we should definitely employ common sense when choosing what we wear if there is concern for safety or something in that vein.

Here's my final thought on the question I posed after reading through the conversation here - I will pretty much always wear what I want to wear, but I will also be mindful of the environment that I'll be in. I just have to ask myself what's my intention in choosing what I wear - am I trying to impress someone or am I doing it because the piece makes me happy? Hopefully it'll always be the latter. And also, I like to employ the shopping kart metaphor, for those who don't know - it's essentially states that there's no law against not returning your kart to the kart return spot, but it's a universal sign of being a dick if you don't. How that applies here is that, there's no law saying that I shouldn't wear my future rolex, or any luxury brand when I go an volunteer at a soup kitchen or a homeless shelter, but I'd think I'd be a pretty big arsehole if I did that.

·

I usually do not think about where I wear my watches (other than for security concerns) but I can see where they would be inappropriate to wear.

·

Just throwing a thought in. Personal happiness, if meaningful, usually does not come at the expense of people around us. Thus context is important when choosing personal happiness. 👍

·

I'd wear that #monta everywhere 🔥
