ROLEX Demoted by top YouTuber

I was looking for a bit of entertainment before going to sleep last night and watched the usually ridiculous yearly watch brand rankings by Nico Leonard.  If you watch Nico, you know that he is a Rolex fanboy and it was his love for Rolex that got him into the watch industry.  So after watching him diss one of my favorite brands for messing up his event invitation he drops the bombshell that he is demoting his beloved Rolex which has always placed in "God Tier" by three levels to "Meh" tier which is reserved for okay brands that he doesn't care much about.

The interesting part to me was his reasoning which echoes what I have been feeling as well.  Nico is disappointed with the way Rolex has been disrespecting their customers.  He thinks the wait for a watch is insane.  He thinks that the brand shows no innovation.  Watch for yourself but not with anyone impressionable to nasty language around.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FewIgO9ZjJQ

I'm sure the higher ups at Rolex are crushed.

I don't think Hans Wilsdorf cares what you or I or Nico thinks.  He is too busy counting his money.

·

I'm ok with the lack of innovation, that's kinda their thing.  They're a conservative brand.  What's unforgivable is how they treat their customers, or at least their potential customers.   I think this sales model is pretty terrible, but I see why it happens.  Hell, Ferrari has been doing this nonsense for years.  You have to buy enough cars from them before they'll let you buy the really exotic stuff.  It works there, and it's working for Rolex.  Clowns who love to flex love this sh*t.  If it just cost an arm and a leg, lots of really rich people could have them.  But its really special when it costs an arm, both legs, and you had to buy a ton of stuff you didn't even want.  In the end, that Daytona really cost you like $300k.  Now that's a flex.

Maybe the market actually will TANK and all the muggles will sell their watches because they have become uncool? If I could get a Rollie for pennies on the dollah? And it would no longer be a "in-watch"?! That would be the day I bought myself an OP 😊

I doubt he does much of either, he’s been dead since 1960.

At the right price I might buy a used one as well.  The one thing I must give Rolex credit for is making a good quality watch that isn't going to fall apart.

·

Whatever he says, it’ll be INSANE! (or something equally clickbaity).

No longer god tier - I’m sure Switzerland will be on high alert for massive changes….

·

Hee, who he?! 🤷🏽‍♂️🤪

Wot? Wot's this? Did I just heard you thinking of situations to break your own 'exit watch' vow?

Calls the watch police

"Hello sirs. There's this guy who's trying to circumvent his exit watch policy sirs. Yessir, he's using ridiculous suppositions now sir. Help!"

😜 Tiptoes away before @mjosamannen realizes who ratted him out

Hard to argue with the count of views.  I think people just like to watch him freak out.

After long years of collecting all brands of watches, I will dispense this accumulated wisdom and experience for free. If you are ever serious about collecting timepieces, save and only collect Rolex and maybe Patek, fool-stop.

For fools, that is. You forgot the disclaimer again, @JaeBust! I'm not paying for the lawsuit and court fees, this time!

"His/her/their success speaks for itself" has always been a questionable claim, but in the age of Instagram and TikTok celebrities, it's finally a fairly uncontroversial statement when I say: This guy has nothing going for himself.

Oh, and tier lists that are intentionally messed up for the sake of provoking strong reactions are not that entertaining. That whole "I used to think X and Y about Rolex but now I'm thinking Z, and here's why"-thing got so old by now...

rant over

That's exactly what I find so sad. If given a choice between being entertained or being informed, it seems that most people will choose to be entertained. It would be great if the "top YouTubers"  in the watch community were ones that informed at least as much as they entertained. This clown is 99% entertainment (and not overly enjoyable at that) and 1% information (and I may be being generous in that 1% due to rounding up).

There is no point in viewing watch content if you are not going to be entertained. All of the accumulated history and knowledge of all things horological is a tiny niche that can be explored by any of us. Very few of us could entertain.

Don't take any of this too seriously. Nico if fun to watch.  I can name some who aren't (some who poke around here now and then). The work of knowing what you value is yours, not Nico's. He is trying to sell watches to rappers and football players.

I don't own any Casios, not have I ever. I guess the whole "God Tier" thing doesn't work on me. But, I enjoy it nevertheless.

See… this is what gets me, the huge negativity around Nico. Do I detect a trace of the green-eyed monster in people? I would say so.
It’s entertainment, and it’s unfiltered. He has a platform, and a business, and as he alludes to in the video, brands do engage with him. He is popular; I have talked to a lot of people on my travels and whilst he may be “Marmite”, he is a focal point. I like that he is untethered, and as to how honest he is. He loves his watches, and he cares. Like it or not, he came out of relative obscurity, delivered opinionated content with knowledge and passion in a style not seen within horological media, and has garnered a million followers in a few years… clearly it works. If you don’t like the platform or the content you don’t have to engage, but don’t throw shade.
I disagree with a small portion of what Nico thinks about some brands, but I agree with a lot of controversial points. I agree about Ulysse Nardin, I agree about Cartier, I agree about Rolex. I disagree about Tudor. I would buy a Hublot. As a man with a larger frame I even sympathise about his Bremont predicament; I too just attended  an awards dinner the other week and I was not full black tie, and I had to switch tables and hide at the back and pray I didn’t win an award this year (spoiler alert, was nominated for a couple, so genuine social anxiety is not to be laughed at) - it’s no fun when you are not the prettiest penguin in the room.

·

He's probably just short on Rolex stock and long on AP.  Dealers of any product with big egos and big social media audiences are always going to play to their own motivations. It would be a fun game to be in - I admire his ability to capitalise on his niche, although it would be great if he was a little less crass - he's got enough personality without it. #rolex

Not sure if the opinion of this guy matters. Watch is a personal choice. At the end of the day he is grey market dealer and in my opinion the resale market is the reason for high prices and non-availability of some desired pieces from AD. I saw a video where he was angry at Rolex AD then I checked his website and all Rolex were twice the cost, some unworn.

All my watches bring a smile when I just look at them. Can’t care less for what a YouTuber thinks of certain brand.

^ This youtuber is another gem of entertainment value

·

I watch the guy purely from an entertainment perspective. I love it when he rages about Hublot. As weird as he acts at times, I couldn't criticize him, because he probably gets people interested in watches.

·

Sadly I have no idea what's a "Top youTuber" or even who is this guy.

·

I put him on my do not suggest list a long time ago.

·

He is only down grading Rolex as the local Deals in London will not sell, him any watches. Last year I called his company "PPP" and asked what they would offer me for my 18k Date Date (£9k was the offer 😈). I then asked Watches of Switzerland and one independent watch dealer in London and both offered me up wards of £20k and one even went up to £24k. He is a funny guy but his company is a total Joke too. Look at his video and enjoy but dont wast you time buying or selling to him.

You mean acting like he is freaking out 🤫

·

I watch Nico to be entertained and learn a  thing or two about watches especially Rolex. His personal opinions about the watches and brands do not impact my thinking because they are only his opinions.

His lists / rankings are interesting and fun, but I agree with the thoughts of many others that there is little value in ranking brands and  more value in ranking watch models.

·

I enjoyed the video you can't take anything he says to heart it is all meant to have a laugh or two. I own Rolex and love the watch and take no offense on his quirks.

·

I saw this already, love Nico, also agree with his demotion of boring ass Rolex. he also ranks Casio as an automatic God Tier, that makes me happy to know he’s not a watch snob and dumb to Quartz

·

I find Nico to be more annoying than entertaining.
