Quartz…do you own one?

Watch people seem to have an aversion to quartz watches.

What is your reason?

As i ve a bunch of Casio s G Shocks i ve got no aversion against em. Atm i save some money to get me a Orca

Most of my collection is now quartz. I try and keep it to Seiko and Citizen tho. So I know I’m wearing quality. Mechanical is fun and I’ve had my share but I’m a fan of weird ani-digi stuff. I think my next watch might even be one of those old Breitling Aerospace watches. I just find a good quartz watch to be easier all around.

·

I own several quarz watches. I like both mechanical and quartz watches although the premise of collecting them differs. A mechanical watch is a marvel of engineering and knowing the history behind the movement together with the brand is what sparks my interest.

·

Started with them but all are dead, sitting In drawers

·

Of course I own quartz watches. Sometimes watches only come in quartz, like my Seiko Yatching Timer. And there are times when it makes sence to opt for a quartz version of a watch like my Marice Lacroix Aikon; experience the brand without spending a lot more for the same watch with an automatic movement. And if you want to knock around the pool, you can't beat a G-Shock, imho.

·

Quartz watches will sometimes just die making necessary the replacement of the movement, has happened to me with a few less premium watch brands such as Swiss Army on two different occasions. Less forgiveable was the ETA movement in my wife’s Cartier Roadster which also necessitated the replacement of the movement. The costs are not onerous relative to the full service expense of mechanical watches but watches are suppose to endure hopefully longer than a few years. Having said that my wife’s quartz Hermes watch a gift from me to her the summer before we married keeps on working after 39 years with a battery change. Love and hate, the convenience the potential for throwing away.

·

3 of my 5 watches are quartz so I don’t descriminate. But it’s just like some car people hating electric cars. They want that V8 roar and enjoy shifting through the gears on a windy road. I understand and respect that opinion but I understand the need for electric cars as well. I like mechanical watches for the same reasons as everyone else but I think we can all agree that (barring an EMP from nuclear war) quartz watches are technically superior to their mechanical counterparts in today’s world. Personally I’d like to have a mechanical watch and a Ford Lightning electric truck. What kind of sense does that make???

·

I love quartz. Vintage quartz is awesome!

Quartz is amazing. It brought time to everyone for cheep. You can spend $10 and catch the bus, get to work on time, take a lunch break, then meet friends after work at the right time.

Luxury quartz is also great. This little beauty is spot on the time and I last set it March 1st

Those older Breitling analog-digital watches don’t get enough credit. Pilots and astronauts wore them but they’re almost totally overlooked today.

·

I have plenty of quartz, though I didn't have any until I was bought one around '05, and I probably only bought my first in the last 5 years. The Mrs has several from the 80s and I think only one has failed.

I just prefer having a mechanical, the idea of powering it yourself by a simple wind gives it something more personal than a battery.

·

I have G-Shocks, Swatch watches and fashion brands to round out my collection of mechanical watches from Seiko, Orient and Hamilton. There's nothing wrong with quartz watches. They're accurate and durable.

·

I’d own one. Just remember to change the battery regularly or remove the battery if you don’t plan to use it for a long time.

·

I have still my first watch, a Tissot v8 quartz-chrono, a GS SBGX263, a CasiOak Rainbow, a Casio F91W and a Swatch Big Bold Jumpsuit

I also had till last month a Longines Conquest VHP and i am eyeballing a GS GMT in quartz. I focus on automatic, but dont mind nice quartz watches

·

I own a couple. No problem for me. Quartz is a good option for the budget portion of a collection. However, there are few luxury level priced quartz watches I would consider. If I’m spending over 4k there has to be something unique for me to consider a watch based on a budget technology, for example the Breitling Emergency.

A quartz watch is also a marvel of engineering. Take a material like . . . oh I don't know . . . quartz. Shape it into a tiny tuning fork and apply a current to it so it oscillates at a precise frequency. Then use electronics and motors to step the frequency down to precisely one tick per second. This $25 movement will be more accurate than virtually any mechanical watch. The power will come from a battery the size of a very small pea which will cost a dollar and last for three years.

Makes me wonder what I've done lately that's fantastic.

Yes, of course no arguing here. But my premise for getting a quartz watch is not the movement itself, rather the accuracy and not having to wind and set the watch every time.

Thanks for your response. I have some of both, and favor quartz over mechanical. What if there were such a thing as a solar meca-quartz watch? This would solve the two "problems" of quartz - battery changes and the one-tick second hand. If there was such a watch at a fair price would you buy it?

I have driven manual standard cars since the age of 16 and discovered how sit back and relax an automatic transmission can be... Quartz are automatics right? Jokes aside I love quartz for its simplicity and ruggedness. I own 2 solar ones that are in my top 5 rotations. Gsquare and the Sne573. The sne573 is very tooly and is my main work everyday watch since I've got it last spring and it became my fave all rounder. Always on time ticking grab and go swipe a few straps and let's enjoy how versatile it can be. As much as I like automatic I think solar quartz as become my favourite now. My next one will probably the Seiko speedtimer. I doubt that anybody who are enthusiastic about watches would regard them as no good.

They are also very important in the watch industry because they broaden the appeal of wearing a watch without having to spend alot of money!

Kudos to Seiko and casio for that!

·

I own a Casio DW-5600 white skeleton, a Phoibos Eagle Ray GMT (because I cannot afford the Automatic GMT yet), and Grand Seiko SBGX265. The GS because it is super accurate at +/- 10sec a year and it is a good look blue dial.

Latest addition is quartz!

Most of my collection is now quartz. I have a lot of appreciation for a high quality, serviceable quartz movement. I love mechanical watches, but there’s something nice about the reliability of quartz.

·

I've unloaded all my quartz, with the exception of 2. A Casio Dura as its the ultimate beater and a Swatch Blue Grid my family bought me. Otherwise only mechanical for me.

·

I used to be all anti- #quartz.

but the utility of being able to pick up a watch when I am running exceptionally late for work

and not have to adjust the time is a huge benefit.

But if we're talking quartz,

most of my #seiko #chronographs are quartz.

My 1980s lady's diver's are pretty cool too:

Then there is the accuracy of quartz timepieces which is a big plus

especially with the growing number of vintage pieces quietly infiltrating my collection:

That is a nice eclectic collection there! Love it.. I like watch dials.. don’t care about the movement anymore. Manual Auto Quartz Kinetic Solar… as long as the quality is there, don’t see an issue.

But then I don’t care what time it is … or day for that matter! 😂

Love them, own plenty and continue to acquire at the same pace as mechanical pieces.

Sometimes they make sense. Service costs, traveling, ease of use/grab and go, thin, functions to price ratio or simply they can do things that mechanical pieces can’t or won’t ever be able to.

I have way more mechanical pieces, but sometimes a good sports watch or even a watch like the Cartier Tank, I am buying for the design and aesthetic as opposed to the movement inside. This coming from a manual wind Santos owner🙃, but I digress. I also like that it alllows the entry level into some watches to be more attainable. Pair that with my GS that is a serviceable and generational movement, there is a lot to love here.
