I need your help (overrated watches)

Hey WatchCrunch fam! I'm currently making a video about the most overrated watches in the enthusiast world.

I'm very interested to get a range of opinions and suggestions so it's not just me being biased to what I like and don't like.

Any brands, any value, let me know!

Overrated? Anything and everything by Rolex. So many people treat Rolex with reverence as if it can do no wrong. But they aren’t the most luxurious watches in the world, and they are mostly mass produced by machine, rather than in limited volumes by hand.

Any current watch from Tudor.

They're sound timepieces. But the designs are lifeless and all the hype is because of the Rolex genealogy.

·

The SKX. It was great when it was released in the 90s, but by the 2010s it was outdated, and only cheap because nobody wanted to buy them at retail, so they were on the grey market.

In reality, most of the affordable Seikos people fawn over are a bit overrated, as many of them had glaring flaws that people wouldn't forgive in other brands. It's like when Toyota fanboys say the Tacoma is the best truck every made, then mention that they are on their third frame in their Taco...

I’d include the Sarb017. Cool watch, sure, but not at $2k used.

Casio! God tier my left foot.

(duckandcover :)

Tag Heuer Monaco - the watch I so badly want to buy but can't bring myself to pull the trigger.

Aesthetically it is beautiful. But it is a watch that is so much more worthy of a higher level of horology. Having a Calibre 11 or 12 under the hood is akin to Ferrari putting a Mazda engine in one of their cars.

Even the latest Calibre 2 Monaco's... you can get a Speedmaster or Zenith Chronograph for similar prices (sometimes lower).

Again - I so want to pull the trigger. But even with an offer of a 25% off RRP brand new I still can't pull the trigger.

i think rolex is so overrated. im too tired watching every watch story on youtube about rolex is their grail watch. rolex is great, true. but there are many other great brand too

·

I don’t know about overrated but I was massively let down when trying on a Gs shunbun.

The case felt a bit cheap and the bracelet was terrible. The dial is still stunning tho.

Judging by price hikes over the past few years, I think Omega over rates itself by a large margin.

Agreed, the price of the aqua terra in comparison with the others models they sell is way out of proportion

About three years ago, I bought a hesalite Speedy new for $5500 CDN out the door after discount and taxes.

Today’s hesalite Speedy has an MSRP of $9,000. They don’t want to discount. After tax, that’s $10,170. There is no way I’m paying that for a hesalite Speedy and there’s not enough improvement in the new model to justify that increase in price.

For these prices, I’m buying Rolex, Blancpain, Glashutte, Zenith, etc., not Omega.

·

Rolex, Omega, and Tudar. Always the same sh*t. No innovation anymore.

·

We are talking luxury, anything over $1k is a luxury purchase to me and I own several brands that cost me between $5k - $20k. I expect the brand to treat me like a valued customer if they want my business. There is a lot of shenanigans with brands like Rolex, AP, VC, PP etc and I do not feel like a valued customer. I understand there is a ton of demand for these brands, then make it fair, may be do a lottery like MB&F does. Then there are brands like Zenith that sucks in after sales service, but have good customer service. Brand like JLC GS does a spectacular job of both customer service and after sales service. There are several micro brands that does a great job as well, some go above and beyond. I would rate brands as overrated based on 1. how they treat their customers 2. after sales service.

·

My personal opinion:

Tudor

I understand every argument why the brand is special...and it is indeed.

But their watch designs are so boring.

It's a typicsl enthusiast bubble brand. Most people I know bought it to be more stealth with their luxury watch. But in this case any Seiko would do the job.

Visual most Tudors doesn't looks like a 3, 4 or 5 K watch.

Rolex and Seiko

·

Tudor Ranger, that dial 🤦‍♂

Omega Seamaster 300m Pro new models, technically brilliant etc but just done to death.

With the exception of the #rolex #airking...

Even Worse, any "new" #seiko5. They are half-assed recreations of the #skx that all look generic and horrible (lMHO). I miss the good old days when there were 1,000,000 different Seiko 5 models, all individually interesting in their own way, and some just spectacular. And you could pick one up for less than $100. Now they're like $300+ 😕

Blasphemy!

100% correct... but blasphemy!😜

I was reading, thinking everyone Loves Omega! Just as well you Came along @Davemcc!

#omega's value is in its past, if I had the means and opportunity, I'd pick up a vintage #seamaster or original #moonwatch before buying a modern piece.

Speaking of... need I mention the #moonswatch when it comes to overrated hunks of plastic? (I mean #bioceramic).

·

Rolex for the status & hype(& being constantly rammed down our throats by YouTubers), Tudor for being bland and only surviving because their Rolie connection. Casio because they're digital plastic disposables, moonswatch , RM, & way too many generic cookie cutter Kickstarter microbrands to mention !!

·

After seeing the battle of the sweep where the omega f300hz vs Rolex are compared and it’s major difference in smoothness, 50% of Rolex’s value is the brand the other 50% quality, not worth the money.

not that I would say no to a Daytona 😅
