Dress Dive Watch - Your Definition

What is the definition of a dress diver?

At first the term "dress diver" didn't make sense to me at all.  In fact I still don't think I get it, so I turn to you for your opinion.

***************

For me, an it is an ISO certified dive watch that is way to shiny for actual diving, or has gold accents constitutes what I would call a dress diver.

What say you?  Comment, post a photo, or both, Thanks!

I think once you pay $10k+ for a watch it can be a dress watch if you want. At that price you can wear whatever you want. It’s called being eccentric.

To your point more specifically, I think not being ISO certified or having a ton of WR makes it more of a dress watch Because it’s even more a case of style over substance.

Definition of a dress diver:  You were looking awesome in your suit, until you got into an underwater fight with this bad guy.  Note, bad guy watch will not survive, it is just a dress watch.  Because you wore the proper watch for the occasion, you and the watch turn out fine.  Good guys always win. Lesson: always wear a diver and get swimming lessons.

I've always understood "dress diver" to be a dive style watch that is clearly more about style than functionality. All luxury brand divers are "dress divers", as are vintage styled divers.

😜

A diver I wear with dress clothes when I feel like it.

Really though, elements of form over function as has been said. Gold, polished surfaces and edges galore, things that make me chuckle about looking at while I'm breathing off the tank.

I think this qualifies 🏄

A dress diver must have applied indices! And polished surfaces that get scratched.

How about the Bathyscaphe?

Precious metal options covered as well. In contrast to the regular FF it’s certainly more dressy.

·

An interesting question that I would have to think about. Rather than providing examples I’ll use my own humble opinion. A dive based watch that will never see a drop of water but can be dressed up with a suit. This can be regardless of price point.

·

Yes, a narrow bezel, often bare metal instead of inlaid, and a less prominent crown are more the hallmarks than some buffing or use of precious metal. I'd presume the bezel edge is not very aggressive and the case dimensions are trimmed down a bit too.

In the day it was a diver. Now my Aqualand has graduated to dress diver status.

The word combination doesn't make a lot of sense to me either, like asking what is a dress wet suit.

Assuming that dress divers are a real thing, then maybe this is the definition for any ISO 6425 certified watch that is not used for diving? In this case that would be what, 80%, 90% or even a higher percentage of all these divers watches currently sold?

I consider all  my divers worthy of being a dress watch.

Dress wet suit. Hence the need for dress divers. For all your horological needs under the sea.

I think I may have used this term recently to describe a watch that I had accidentally ordered from a company while taking a look through their website the other day.

🤷

It was the only way I could think to describe the piece, because it is based off the design of a watch called the Seahunter which is touted as a diver with all the usual diver related quality's. How the version I managed to put in my basket and inadvertently pull the trigger on on is a slimed down version with a simple dial layout no numerals just indices and a simple solid bezel but with 200m of WR. So totally useless as a diver but with the initial vauge resemblance of one. It was the only way I could think to call it. They called it the Seahunter Slim I think.

Very nice!  With the gold makes it a dress diver IMO.

To me a dress watch is anything I feel like wearing on the night , especially if it screams “not an apple watch “

Agreed!  I usually wear whatever I feel like, even with a suit.  I do own a few proper dress watches as well.

To answer the original question, I'm going with "anything dressier than a Suunto".
