In a mood to buy?

Do you ever, inexplicably except for the love of watches, find yourself itching to buy a watch?

No reason, no hole in the collection except for grail watches, but just want a new addition.

I have 27 at this time but find myself always looking. I guess we’re all the same generally around here. I guess a “collector” term fits here.

The variety of styles and vintage pieces are always enticing. The pics you all post are truly inspiring and you have some amazing collections. 🍻

Enjoy being around here and the friendly and supportive vibe of this community. Really appreciate the love of a $15 Casio and a $150,000 watch by all. Very refreshing.

Only once a day and twice on Sundays.

No, not at all!......just don't look at my 19 open tabs in Chrome!! I just started "collecting" rather than wearing just one and it has been a bit of an avalanche to say the least. The internet makes searching and buying too easy. Watches just appear in my mailbox.

·

I never had such feelings!!

😂

Pssst… I bought 2 watches yesterday for no reason… 🤦 ….

Let’s talk about it …

I am still starting my journey, but being honest, I don't want to land in this condition you exemplify :)

Informing myself, checking prices, new releases, getting to know and improving my taste, watching any new video that comes out on YT... All good, as long as other priorities still come first. But IMO "buying just for buying" is just sick.

It's not only about the money. If someone is repeatidly buying stuff that he or she is not using at all, then there are probably a lot of other more important thing not working in this person's life. Such a person should look for professional help.

You are right. I hate my job but they pay me way too much money to quit and I’m not ready to retire yet.

Sometimes when I have a bad day at work, I stop at my AD on the way home for a little retail therapy.

·

As the impulse to buy another watch washes over me like a Kanagawa Wave I tightly clasp my hands together and repeat "Not today Satan!" then I hit the buy button.

·

I am on a bit of a weekly streak in the past month or so. I do rotate the ones I have picked up so far and am reminded when I have them on wrist why I picked them up in the first place. Most of my watches I have gotten great deals on new and used. Only ones I bought at retail are my two Nodus watches.

I like to call that sad buying. I have done that at times lol

It happens to the best of us

Too many times, in fact

·

Yes all the time. I'm a student who just moved out for the first time too so I need to be careful... Luckily for me my roommates will be on my ass if I spend too much lol

·

No, I’m allergic to spending money. It takes me weeks to years to make a decision! I did buy a watch on impulse (in person at a retail store), a bright red G-Shock CasiOak, but I eventually sold it for what I paid for it.

·

I have bought 4 watches this year and one twice is you count the Casio mod kit from my Casio Royal hahaha

·

non of us are normal here haha

Sounds familiar 🙂 I've been only been in the watch game for two months now, but have acquired two and the third is almost here 😬 But I believe (I do! I must!) that once I have three or four (or so) I can ease up a little bit, enjoy the mini-collection and take some time before scouring the internet this intensely again :)

·

I used to, until I got the one I got in October. Desire to buy a watch has since disappeared. It's weird. My wallet approves, though.

·

Yes. A hundred times yes. But I’m also in a mood to sell. I’ve bought a few watches recently in a higher price bracket than I’m used to so I’m actually getting really excited about reducing my collection. I think I got a lot of watches that were “this will be my stand-in for watch X” but now I actually have watch X, I’m looking forward to down-sizing. Selling watches is fun if you’ve already written off the cost you paid.

·

Well this is concerning. I thought it was just because I was new to the hobby and have 5 watches(granted 5 more than anyone need these days). But yeah I often find myself starting to justify buying watches. From 12k to walking around Walmart and looking at the Timex. I was going to blame the amount of YouTube content I’ve been binging. Crap!

Well it’s better than being an alcoholic and chasing women I suppose. Cheaper and less likely to put you in the ground early anyway.

Two came in last week and one is coming today or tomorrow. Yeah, it’s a problem.

Last month I had three arrive in one week… I had to rush home to meet the mail man before the wife signed for another package.

The waiting is the worst part. I was giving my kid a shower and my doorbell alarm goes off and by the time I got to the door the delivery man was walking back to the truck with the package and I was chasing him down like a madman with soapy hands and wearing my pajamas. Ugh my life!

·

I’m always in the mood to buy, but I’ve learned to listen to the “itch” only when I have the funds for it.

Yup! That's the the one, "The Great Wave off Kanagawa." Hokusai's best known work, circa 1831. Epic!

·

You mean like right now?

I'd be lying like a certain red-haired former President, if I said that I never had inexplicable urges to add some watches to my collection.

My days during lockdown were referenced as 3WD or 4WD...three watch day or four watch day...depending on how many showed up in the mail that day.

My most infamous day was probably the 9WD (but in all fairness eight of the watches were from one seller...my good friends Sigfrid and Silvia at Watches83.com - they have such amazing vintage pieces - it is incredibly hard to stop once you get started looking through their inventory).

I have revisited which watches were the result of mental health visits to my AD over the past five or six years. These are the ones that I picked up.

That’s not too bad for that number of years. Average one per year.

I agree not too bad! If you were my patient, I’d say as long as you didn’t forgo paying your essentials and you have other good coping strategies for stress then all is good!

"Just don't look at my 19 open tabs in Chrome." Hah! You and me both! 👍

·

I used to buy only to replace what I've lost, or broken down. Then it just got sort of.... expanded. Even before all the hype on social media, I just went buying what I found interesting but not too unreasonable, pretty much the same up to now.

I have been collecting for over 45 years. There can be a dark side to this as many collectors like me have experienced. It can be a disease, obsession, hobby, addiction and many other traits. We have encountered challenges and sometimes hard to rationalize. There is a human element to this but at least watch collecting is not a drug or a social disease that is considered a vice, felony or misdemeanor!
