The New Tudor Ranger Thoughts?

Before I start filming and researching on the Tudor Ranger, I’d love to know your thoughts on it.
I have it in person right now loaned in by a subscriber.
This is a £2400 watch on the bracelet. It’s a luxury watch .

I own a 39 Explorer 214270 and a Vertex M100.
Also own a black Bay 58.
Those 3 watches really do ooooze toolyness and luxury all in their individual packages .

This Ranger? ….. Not sure!
look forward to sharing my thoughts next week!

I love it based on what I have seen so far, but I still haven’t got hands on the watch. I think the simple time only design is great and I like the dial execution. Printed markers are fine to me for this style of watch. I really like the word “Ranger” over the old smiley face. Size seems great to me.  I am targeting this as my next purchase if I like it in person as I have been wanting to upgrade my field watch for a while. I think this will look amazing on a green canvas strap.

I love the look. It is beautiful. Being a "Vintage Purist"😂, the only issue I have is that it is way to expensive for what it is, just a copy of the original.

When you think about it, you could get more than just a historical rich design with modern materials if you look for a real Piece out of Time (Yes, not Time Piece. I said it first.) and hunt for the actual Vintage example of the Ranger. Yes, a Vintage Ranger is 3 times the price but it is the REAL deal.

Basically this re-release is just a licensed hommage. That is my true opinion. Just another re-enactment of a watch that already was.

I hear you my friend. I guess it’s a reinterpretation to an original Ranger. The size of the case, the modern bracelet and clasp, the in house movement. In terms of specs it’s a great watch . It’s the dial that ruins it for me. Turn this into a 36mm and they may pull off the printed dial better? Take a look at the Vertex M100 with the moulded lume blocks for the numbers and markers! Or a Hamilton khaki Pilot pioneer with a sand paper grain finish to the dial. Something to give it …., something!;)

I had the same thought. Why not buy a Hamilton? This is a crowded space, indeed.

Reach out to @BigIona he loves his and most likely have some thoughts about it…he might be busy though doing his homework…

I dig it - and Tudor listened to the vintage tool enthusiast crowd. Made the 2014 Ranger smaller, supplied it with an in-house movement, added the Ranger name to the dial, kept the dial nice and clean and retained the painted lume rather than going with applied markers. Best part is that it's priced at less than $3,000. A big win for Tudor in my opinion.

EDIT: Oh, and I forgot to mention, the super handy T-Fit clasp. There's a whole lot of watch here and it's Tudor's most affordable in-house movement watch in the current collection.

I am 100% with you.  The specs and sizing are basically perfect, but it lacks pizzazz.

I know people like the purity of the dial, but for Tudor, which has such amazing and interesting watches to its credit, to me it looks a bit too much like a child's rendering of what a watch looks like.

A sand paper finish would have been beautiful.  Perhaps bb bronze style applied numerals and markers.  I'm not a design head, but I feel like it needs something to distinguish it from countless other field watches which could, on the face of it, compete successfully with this at wildly different price points.

·

I love the classic look, the simplicity of the dial is very elegant imo. cosc certified and the price makes it attainable

·

Full disclosure, I own one: so my POV is biased. But I'll be honest...

I genuinely get the arguments for and against it. And have come to understand that the reality is, you can't please everyone. While this will dissapiont a lot of people, it's more than pleasing to a lot of people, including me. However...

The truth? I didn't LOVE it when I picked it up. BUT quickly saw it's charms. Even then, there's things I would change. Personally I like the fauxtina and printed numerals (am I the only one?) and even the butt plug hour hand. Then there's the bracelet which is first class. Would love a slightly smaller case size though. Not 36 but maybe 37 or 38 even. And less negative space on the dial. It doesn't have to be perfect though, how it is is great.

My conclusion...

It's a grower not a shower.

·

I’m interested in how it wears.  39mm is probably the largest diameter that can wear well on my skinny wrist.  If the lug to lug is reasonably short and a little curvy.  Looking at images of this watch, I suspect it wears more like a 40 or 41.

·

Tried it on the other day. Looked a bit dull to be honest. Better to save up a bit and get the bb pro.

·

Butt plug. That's what I see.

·

I like it but it does not standout. I feel they could of done a white dial maybe blue or a titanium edition? Having one dial with three strap options is not enough any more. Again I never held one or wore one so I'm just judging from pictures, videos and as a watch fan.

Great feedback from an actual owner. I think 38mm probably would have been better but like you I am actually drawn to the printed dial, including the color of the hands and markers. It’s a field watch after all.

·

I tried it on Saturday.  I have to say, I really liked it on wrist, but then I’m a sucker for mid-century exploreration-style watches.

That said, I’m struggling to see why I would wear it above my Alpinist 1959 re-issue, or even a Baby Alpinist.

I fear it’s a lot of money for a watch that just wouldn’t get much wrist time.

·

I'd have to see one in person before making a judgement, but based on the photos and videos I've seen, it holds very little  appeal to me. It just seems a bit dull and generic looking.

I recently have been looking at reviews of this since there's not really a chance to do a hands on at this point, so grain of salt with my opinion.  I saw one video from IDGuy on Youtube and I agree with his praise and personal view of what he would have like to see.  His interpretation is on the left on this picture, and is more of a modern approach, with some style queues from the North Flag. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQ1pyAWQnFQ  I have provide the link and the comparison is near the end.

I prefer to keep the 39mm case.  I need the white lume.  The numeral font needs to change.

I like the size, but I can see why some would want smaller. I think a 36 and 39 release would cover a lot more wrists/preferences. After all, at 2.01m (6'7"), I don't walk into a clothing store and expect a medium t-shirt to fit me. I personally would prefer 39 with my wrist/size. The Explorer 39 fit my perfectly when I tried it on, but I don't want to pay the current used pricing. This sort of makes up for the Explorer 39 going away. I know the printing makes it fairly true to the original, but I think using the ceramic lume from the BB Pro would have been the perfect way to modernize it while keeping the same look. Give it a little depth (and probably better lume). Speaking of, how is the lume on it in real life? Bright? How about compared to the BB58 I believe you own? Does it last very long? It's not a diver, but I would at least not want it to be poor lume. It's got to be better than what one finds on a Khaki Field, right? My only other quibble is the colour of the lume. Is it yellow? Tan? Slightly green? I can't tell. The yellow and green look aren't for me, which is why I am not only curious, but think the BB Pro lume would have been a great selection, or even bright white lume (see: Sinn 556A for how good that looks). Does it still feel premium like the BB36, BB58, Pelagos, etc?

Thank you my friend. I’m going to save it for the review next week. It does not feel like a premium watch imo . But it may grow on me!

Yeah…a bit un-leavened. I know it’s a field. I know one must also sport an eagle-headed cane to wear one. But maybe.…just maybe there’s a Timex out there as appealing and one that does not require a thumb amputation when the bookie comes looking for a payment.

Dave, I hear you.  I have really a range of size that I am okay with, about 36-42mm depending on the style and the watch.  I think the 39mm is just fine on this one and it looks very good on all of the wrist's of there reviewers, IMHO.  Smaller is more retro and modern is larger, as a rule of thumb so if this is modern take on an older original, then a little bit from column A, a little bit from column B . . . white lume, definitely.👍

I was really into this watch until this comment. Ruined it for me 😞

🤣🤣 sorry!

·

The 2014 version was the only Tudor I ever considered owning.

This new release does nothing for me. They've made the watch dull, and anachronistic, with the new lume.
I'm sure Rolex/Tudor fans are gonna buy these like hot cakes regardless. "Ranger on the wrist, Explorer in the safe"

·

It's OK. Because it's Tudor, it'll be very well executed. But it doesn't grab me like their other recent watches. I think it's probably been made to placate those who wanted a 39mm Rolex Explorer 1 and didn't get one in time for the change to 36mm.

·

I like it, but it's not a Timex and I like a date window, even though I can no longer read it.😜

·

I just watched a video that showed the lume for the first time.  It has green lume on the numerals and markers with blue lume on the hands.  It’s a hot mess.

This is so unfortunate for a watch that came so close perfect for the want of a decent dial.  Seriously, the only standard I’d hold this watch to is having a decent dial.  Not stunning, not fantastic, just decent because everything else besides the dial is amazing. But it’s a hard pass from me.

·

I would definitely take it over the explorer. That said, I think they could have done some things to spruce it up so the face doesn't look so plain. Maybe thicker lume plots or applied markers... Dunno, it just looks overly plain.

I saw that video aswell!!! But by the Lume colour is the same . God knows what that was all about!;)

Haven't seen it in the flesh, but I feel I would quite like it. Looks like an upmarket Sinn 556, for which I have been many times on record for saying it was a modern 1016.

The fauxrivets on my BB58 don't bother me too much, but I would prefer the cleaner look (and on the fly adjustability) of the Ranger steel bracelet.

Zero complication, Tudor Brand, no nonsense watch, great power reserve, good depth rating, resistance to magnetism, fair price. Right up my alley. A Tudor Rose logo would look so good too 😉
