CWoW Budget edition

Happy Wednesday all! The last Cool Wall post was a million-dollar monstrosity. Today I hit you with a $12 icon. What more can be said that hasn't been said already? It's a plastic toy; it's the perfect beater watch, it's a joke, its name is uttered in the same sentence as infamous terrorists, as well as movie stars, athelets, and world leaders. While to many, it may just be everything one may want or need from a watch. What do ya say, Crunchers? Where does this accessible legend of horology fit on our wall?

No introduction needed, everyone knows it's the Casio F-91W!

I think we all know exactly where this one is going.

God-tier!

·

That it’s uncool is what makes it cool!

·

As cool as it is I went upscale

That's fair.  I like what it is, but for such a simple digital watch, it maybe gets too much love.

·

Ugh....I actually don't like this watch.

It's like a Reliant Robin.  Its definitely a classic...but the moment you can afford something marginally better, it probably makes sense to go with that instead.

I think there are watches that transcend their price ranges.  Seiko 5s, Swatches, and a ton of Casios (Duros, G-shocks, Casio Royales, even the metal clad versions of the F-91w).

But the F-91W, to me is exactly the $15 plastic watch it is.

Voted Uncool and am prepared to have people shout at me.

Cool photos! I agree. It’s a legendary $12 watch but I feel it’s worth it to shell out the extra dollars for steel. Not only is the steel sub-zero cool, I feel like it elevates the dial, colors, and text to look even better on the case.

It's a cool staple

Waiting for a chance to vote on a Flieger :)

·

Uncool. Too small. Worthless backlight. It had its time, and deserves a spot in the horological history book (how many watches can say that?), but leave it there. Today it’s about as cool as parachute pants and a mullet.

I had a Casio that was like this as my very first watch in the early 80's. It introduced me to the world of horology. This watch has been a blessing and a curse to me and probably to many others. LOL To me this watch is an icon just like Rolex. It has helped set the bar in the digital watch world. I think that makes it super, super cool.

·

The decision-making process is directly based on how much I think people will argue, haha.

·

I voted cool simply because of it's historical significance in horology.

Outside of that, un-cool.

·

I voted Cool simply because they do have a place in history. Would I buy one, hell no, I’d rather buy a coffee 🤣

·

Nope. Not cool then, not cool now.

This is a false nostalgia for the 1980's.  This is the Chevette of watches.

Cool gateway drugs for watches. Mind you I started out with a Swatch (Dugong putting some airs on, hoo-ha!) but yes, very cool.

·

It's the McDonald's hamburger of watches, cheap to buy, but not really worth it.

Also, the F91-W came out in 1989... it's not as old as other more properly "iconic" digital watches, like the G-Shock, and Ironman.

Its popularity seems mostly based on cheapness, and influencers pushing it hard so people who can't afford the watches luxury watches the influencer normally hypes still tune-in to their videos and blogs.

Just look at the responses in this thread where people vote it to be cool, simply because they have been told it's "God tier", and "horologically significant".

·

I voted sub zero cos I bought one for my nephew and he’s 3. And I think he’s sub zero too. 😎

You forgot to add another option…

GOD TIER.

Waaay too small for my taste. But it is a perennial favorite.
