Trading in a GS to fund a reverso

Hi All,

Back in 2020 I bought a Grand Seiko Four Seasons Spring U.S. Exclusive Spring Drive SBGA413, you know the pinky dial. Lovely watch but i never wear it.

I wanted to trade it in for a medium size reverso duo face travel time etc.. see the pix!

I'm only getting $3,500 for the GS and have to add $6K to the deal for the reverso.

Am I crazy or is the reverse worth it?

Personally, I thought about taking a hit on my Panerai to fund another watch, but nothing else really speaks to me. This is a hobby where our heart tends to outweigh our wallet, so how does the Jaeger make you feel?

Beautiful piece, too!

·

The JLC would be worn the most often. It's a design that suits me personally and my style/clothing!

The GS deserved better than me... it's a lovely watch.

·

I'm a Reverso fan myself, so I'd definitely sell the GS and buy the nicer watch.

·

Crazy.

·

If you are not fully into the reverso dont do it.

If you always wanted it, watched alot of videos and when a reverso was shown you felt the binding, do it.

·

The reverso is amazing. I was wearing my Duoface today. I don’t think it’s as versatile as a GS, and is only 30m water resistant, but it’s totally gorgeous. If you are good with the specs of the Reverso and still think it will get the wrist time then I say go for it.

·

Ask yourself first why aren't you wearing the GS? That watch is pretty versatile. I've had one on wrist and the pink is so subtle that it would go with just about everything you wear.

My advice is always buy what speaks to you so I'd do the trade up into the Reverso, but the GS must have spoken to you at some point. Why did you fall out of love?

·

I'm not a GS guy, but $3,500 seems like a bad deal.  Could you do way better in an outright sale?

That said, if you don't wear it, you should free up the $ for something you will wear...

·

very much a personal decision

me

keep gs

I agree with this. I can't imagine personally making the trade, because for me that GS offers so much more than the JLC. Such a fantastic piece that can flex in different directions. It's the same reason I'd ultimately rather have a Cartier Santos than the JLC.

The heart wants what the heart wants. But maybe try wearing the GS exclusively for a few weeks and see if that passion might just be clouded?

Same position long time ago, but with the SBGA415.

thinking back, it was crazy of me to even think of it; i was thinking of selling a machine for a fidget toy… no offence 😂

but it is a matter of personal preference, but since you’re asking: No

Im sure I could but im not based in the states so selling is messy and id much rather convience over an extra 500 bucks.

When I go to my watch box I never pick the GS, there always somthing more interesting there.

I bought the GS because I work for Toyota and on business travel I though my Japanese collegues would appreciate it, they dont lol

I agree the GS is much more verstile and mechanically amazing but I never put it on and if it was next to a reverso it would have no chance.

Just curious, what do your Japanese Colleagues think of GS in general?

·

it is made a sense for me. as i myself is a big fan of the reverso.

·

Currently there are 46 used SBGA413s being sold on Chrono 24.  The lowest price one is $4610 and the highest is $7600.00.  I would try to negotiate a better deal or sell the watch yourself for $4500.00.

·

It’s amazing. I just traded in a Reverso to buy a Grand Seiko! All I can say is - try on the one you like and wear it for as long as possible to make sure you’re happy with the fit. Rectangular watches are notorious for having fit problems. I didn’t try mine on because it was part of a bigger purchase and I got a very difficult to get watch during the early covid lockdowns. It never fitted properly so I got rid of it. Now I know that a smaller Reverso would have worked better 🤦🏻‍♂️

·

If you can get a decent price for your GS (a watch you don't wear) and use that towards a beautiful JLC Reverso (a watch which it sounds like you would wear frequently), it seems like a wise choice.

·

SELL it to me for 3500!  😀

Well, it's a terrible deal for you, so maybe don't do that.  😞

I guess if you are doing a trade in then there can be considerable tax savings as well?  3500 hundred trade in is worth about 420 dollars more in tax savings in here in Vancouver BC.  And something to be said for having an effortless transaction, it can be a pain in the butt selling privately.

While mankai hanami me considers the 413 grail-worthy, I will totally agree with those that opined you should follow your heart on this.  Follow your joy in the direction it takes you.  Thank the GS for it's good service and let it go...  🙋‍♂️

If we all loved that exact same stuff it'd be way too boring.

·

Sounds like a bad trade to me.

The JLC looks like it sells for around $7,400 and the GS for around $5,500.

So assuming you need to take a hit of 40% on the trade-in then I would think the total price should be more like the GS plus $4,000

·

Sell it! if you do not wear it, if you don’t even consider it, when you open your watch box … just get the Reverso you are paying for an amazing watch and you are learning a valuable lesson that could be applied in life ( dont buy shit that you don’t really like) the sell of the reverso it’s just an stepping stone in this game of thrones.

·

If You can afford it buy the JLC and keep the GS. JLC reverso is intended to be a sports watch.

·

Just keep in mind, that if you sell a GS it is going to be unreversable.

·

Interesting!  I traded in that exact JLC Reverso Duoface for a Grad Seiko SBGA415 Winter.  As much as I liked the Reverso, I barely wore it.

If your GS is taking up room in the watchbox, there really isn't a downside to trading it in for something that you will enjoy and use.  Buy what you like and will use!

·

GS does take big hits on resale IMO. I have a SBGA463 that is new and I get low bids all the time to buy. It sits because I have other divers . I'd take 5K for my $7,300 new watch and I think that's low. Take the hit if it never worn

It sounds like you may have bent one of the tenets of watch collecting and bought a watch for someone else, not for yourself! Maybe that's why the GS doesn't seem to be doing it for you, no matter its merits. 🙂

·

I’d look into more options to sell your GS. Crown & Caliber was offering 4.1k on their site for trade in on a SBGA413 into any other watch they had. And I think that’s the minimum you should accept. Another gentleman quoted the prices on Chrono24 and they start around 4.5-4.6k and I think that’s a good area to start.🍻

·

I love my Reverso Gran Taille!  I have a half dozen or so straps with each one giving it a different look and vibe.  Good luck!

·

Thank you all for the guidance.
Great points were made on both sides. This Christmas, I'll be wearing a Reverso due face!

Haven't thought about the GS since it left so I guess I made the right decision for me.
