I am definitely seeing some different categories of watch collectors. 1. Has 1 or 2 watches. 2. Has the 3 perfect or working on the 3 perfect. 3. The days of the week - has 7 main watches maybe a few extra that are heirlooms and/or gifts or for special occasions. 4. The specific collector - collects watches from one brand, G-Shock comes to mind, or one color, or just Microbrand, or just divers. Ok you get it already. 5. The got to catch them all collector. So who did I miss? What type are you? Have you switched from one to another?
A little over 3 years in, and a bit over a year on WC. What was one has now became many. I very much enjoy watches. Current member of the Horological Society of Utah. New to building and designing wat...

I fall into the #5 category. I don't literally have to get all of the watches but buy what works for my tastes without trying to duplicate something I already own. I can really enjoy an Invicta on my wrist as much as a Squale. I like the variety, the history, and the fun of all aspects of collecting. I am at 52 watches with 3 on order and I plan on slowing down but never stopping. 😎
6. Arbitrary collector. I follow no rules and just get what I like and interests me.

I would put that in category 5.

I'm with this. I have no specific limit and I buy what appeals to me. I'm not #5, there are plenty that I could add but I skip as I have something similar.
I’m #3, but want to be #2, and will probably end up being a combination of 4 and 5. I have six main (Swiss) watches plus two small sub collections of G-Shocks and Seikos.
I would put that in category 5.
But I don’t wanna catch ‘em all!

Okay, what do you want?
I’d like to be #5 but I guess I’m more like #3.
Okay, what do you want?
Catch the ones I like. Not all.
Still trying to figure it out. As a relatively new collector I'm learning what I do and don't like. I do want a diverse collection in the "end"
Sounds good Simon. Enjoy what awaits you!
#5. I usually chase whatever I'm focused on for the moment.
Trying to keep it super minimal yet functional.
I do still want one perfect watch that does everything. Titanium and styled like a pilot's watch so it's nice enough for dress. - But also has all the timers and other features I need.
Basically a bigger fancier version of my Casio. I thought of this one for a long time but i don't love the dial color and the digital features are way too complicated to be really useful for daily activities.
I’m currently #5, but hoping to go to #3.
I am sort of #5, but "got to catch them all" isn't really the theme, not for me, and I doubt it is for anyone. In a much milder form it applies, e.g. if a watch has a complication I do not own yet, or is from a new brand for me then this adds an incentive.
But it's complicated. The last watch I bought was a Skmei clone of a Casio, because I already owned the Casio and I wanted to compare.
I am personally a number 4, a tool watch collector. They fit my casual style and I like watches that I can knock around. Tool watches usually have fun history behind them too.
No rules just try not to duplicate, make have mostly unique watches that make the rotation that much more fun. Although there are a few brands I lean towards I do try to get some variety within those brands.
I buy what speaks to me. I don’t have a rhythm or reason. I want to be at 12-14.
3 here.......so far. Tudor BB48 to Casio MD-24
My goal is definitely #3
I would say Cantaloop sums up my tendency exactly..
No rules for now, but I started selling a few of the one I have to buy a higher end piece
Btw we have almost the same alias, and I also have a Ventura.

Very nice. I checked out your collection. The Ventura like the one you own I still am considering. My alias comes from two parts. The 1st is an NBA team and the second is from a part of the name of an 80s rock band. 😎
#5
#7 wants one or two best in class for each category.
GMT, diver, colour dial, pilot, squar dial, dress etc
#8. Enough watches to fill my watch case. I have seen this one as well.
The random whatever is fun and I can afford collector.
If I had my choice all early to mid 70s.
6. Arbitrary collector. I follow no rules and just get what I like and interests me.
Me too. I only buy what I like and don’t show loyalty to one brand.
What ever rocks my boat I lately leaning towards military watches.
