Well when I picked up the 216570 I was pretty sure I was going to sell the Black Bay steel. I even had it listed to sell for some time. However, the longer I had it listed the more I found myself wanting to keep it....
The logical side of me said: they are way too similar to keep in a collection especially at the price point and feels irresponsible.
The other side of me: I come to realize the Black Bay steel evokes feelings when I look at it and wear it that the Explorer 2 simply does not. And vice versa the Explorer 2 scratches an itch that the Black Bay steel cannot.
I don't know if other collectors have arrived at the same conclusion or not. But there is something inherently illogical about what we collect and what we are drawn to, and maybe that's the whole fun part of this hobby. It's more than just specs, brands, prices etc. It's about what you connect with and how it makes you feel....
Now I think I want to build and shape my collection not on what “makes sense” but more on what truly represents me.
I own 3 similar looking 369 watches and I enjoy alternating between them.
Keep what you genuinely like, no matter how it may relate to anything else you genuinely like.
Yep, collect what makes you happy.
I know guys that have 6-8 dive watches in a 12 pieces collection and couldn't think to sell one, whereas I'm not even capable to differenciate one from another. But we don't care it's not my collection lol. No matter what common sense says, if you love to wear them, keep them mate.
At the end we are on WatchCrunch, the name says it all, logic and reason didn't sign in
Eh. If I had the Fundage, I would be up to my ears in a variety of Black and Steel diver watches, and not even the ones with colours on the bezel. And an Aqua Terra. In black. And steel.
There's an easy solution. Keep the Rolex on the far, left side of your watch box. Keep the Tudor on the far right side. In-between them, fill the spaces with a variety of different style watches. 😎 Problem solved! 😊
Dude. Love them...
To GMT or not to GMT, that is the question...
Odd day of month = watch with odd number of hands. Even day of month = watch with even number of hands.
Interesting post. I’m going through a similar dilemma. I’ve always been drawn to GMTs. Not a pilot but I traveled often in my younger days. I purchased watches that I liked and didn’t really focus on creating a collection. Close to twenty years ago I bought a GMT Master 2. Love that watch, it was my daily wearer for the better part of 15 years, will never part with it.
About 3 years ago I bought the Tudor BB GMT, over the 58. I got it mainly for the “Pepsi” bezel. Over the years I learned about the Master 2 and how the Pepsi was the original, I had gotten the all black bezel.
In the past year, I’ve become interested in reducing my collection while buying 3 more watches to complete my collection with a varied composition. I mostly have GMT’s, chronographs and divers. Simultaneously I was going to eliminate some I don’t wear and redundant ones. I wasn’t going to sell them, just give them away.
Recently on a whim I sold one of them to hodinkee (crown and caliber) and thought I’d sell the Tudor GMT too to subsidize the purchase of the 3 new watches I wanted.
Well I got the GMT all packaged up in its original box with the papers and ready to send to Hodinkee. I looked at it put it on my wrist, decided I’d wear it one last time. Maybe a bad move. But like you, the GMT evoked feelings and memories that made me think I can’t part with this either. 😂 So I think I’ll just have to keep it.
It's like script writing "Give me the exact same thing only different. " I have tons of black dial divers from SKX to Rolex. Love em all!!!

This is awesome! Exactly what I felt when I put mine up for sale. I currently have a thing for divers but I think I may have an evolving preference towards GMT. I'm actually looking at adding a Tudor BB GMT to the collection in the future; idk if you feel this way but it seems as though Rolex and Tudor compliments each other well....
Collecting anything is about emotion, how it makes you feel, not logic. 😀. I love the BB GMT, have that exact one but I built a Seiko one from mod parts at a fraction of the price. Go to EU with the Tudor and Mexico with the Seiko.

There's nothing like a black dial diver; I think starting with the SKX007 really influenced this. Also black divers with red text......shooooot 🔥

And they have a different look really. Just like your Explorer and the BB steel.
