It depends on the style, design, and function of the watch. Roman numerals on a dress watch, not a problem but on a field, flieger, or diver? Nope. And for those who think that IIII instead of IV is "wrong" on a watch dial or clock face, you are all mistaken. It is to clearly differentiate four from five and aid in legibility.
