Does anyone else feel that it’s not that deep?

Often times we see stuff by people waxing poetically about watches “requiring YOU to keep it working”, buying watches “to make memories with”, and so on, but none of that really resonated with me. I will say that gifts that have the usual symbolism, I’m still for, but for the rest, it’s just not that deep for me. I mostly have multiple wristwatches because they are basically an extension of my style and self expression.

I view mechanical watches as being interesting and trinkety, but that’s about it. I like many watches that happen to be mechanical, but I do not usually seek out mechanical watches because they are mechanical.

Depends on the watch.

·

I just think they're neat

That’s how I feel.

I find the evolution of technical and material improvements probably the most interesting.

·

Sometimes a watch is just a watch.

·

There's a desire to share the experience so to that end I'd say it's deep enough to be more than nothing.

·

I started by collecting vintage so I still have that urge preserve things for the next generation.

·

They can be appreciated, but are still mere objects. If you become disproportionately attached to any object, it owns you.

Let me tell you about my journey…

.....it all started with my GADA, once I figured it was a strap monster....

The watches I’m most invested in are Soviet watches. They’re like tangible history of a very different time and place, not just an old Swiss watch

I've got ice in my veins and I'm a cold blooded brother😆

A watch is to tell time and a bit of my style - PERIOD! 💪🏽😎👊🏽

·

Not that deep, just an affectation that I picked up being around my dad who wore one simple frugal OP his entire adult life.

·

I generally just roll me eyes and scroll past those posts.

·

I like watches. A lot. I don’t really get much deeper than that.

·

I got this one because I like batman

They’re trinkets I happen to really enjoy. I doubt I’ll ever be a deep conversationalist on watches.

·

They are a bit of timekeeping, a bit of fashion, and on occasion an object to remind me of an event or person but at the end of the day they are objects.

·

Short answer no. But when I started to collect based on history and heritage started to mean something. From a mall watch to actually going to Japan (twice now) visiting the Seiko Museum to going watch hunting to making friends here in LA and Japan all because of watches. Starts to mean something, this is luxury hobby so I got the luxury to work hard and travel to buy watches. Now if I loose my job and I need rent money or food I'm selling everything and it does not mean anything but a fashion watch/toy.

·

Nope, they're just lovely tools.

Strange hobby really, they're an intimate thing but inanimate (pretty much) and don't require any skill or interaction other than moving to wind & looking at it.

·

I like watches because they're a neat fashion accessory to express my aesthetic preferences, the same way I like jackets or boots. It's really not that deep.

My friend, welcome to this journey, people like what they like, and we can't change them. Everybody in WC has started their own journey for different reasons, some sentimental and some of us are just addicted to the hobby, I can tell that you still can be saved. lol

Enjoy it your way and don't let anyone change that. Great Pool.
