Big or small?

Hi all watch lovers ๐Ÿ™‚

Just wanted to post a question here to see people's opinions on what their perfect size is for a watch.

I saw an Invicta diver out on the streets on the weekend, and it looked massive, ie bigger than the gentlemans head.so I thought I'd ask.

I personally like small watches I have a 7.2 inch wrist but I prefer 34-36mm watches, they tend to disappear when not needed due to their size and lightness but are always there for me to read the time when needed

But sometimes I do like to wear a big watch well what I consider big such as a 40mm diver. Or a Seiko 5 sport which I believe is 42mm.

So I just wanted to find out what people's preferences are and if they like small watches or do they like em big and they cannot lie.

I have 7.5" wrist, and although I could go larger 40 is my max. I prefer 35-38.

Personally I wear both kinds of watches and it all depends on the dial and the story - Sometimes a big diver watch has such a beautiful dial that having it in small size may compromise its visual appeal - on the other hand (pun intended) sometimes a dress watch in small size looks so perfect and classy that having it in larger size just wouldnt have that same element of mystique and class. Last week I for this beautiful vintage Catlrtier Tank but because it was smaller than all my other watches I was unsure if people may call it a ladies watch - but the number of comments I received here saying it looks gorgeous and just perfect reminded me again that lot of times we are being over-critical of ourselves and frankly if you like it just wear it and people will in turn love it too

7.5" wrist and usually like 36-42mm but have just got this 48mm number which just about fits OK.

Dive watches 42mm-46mm

Flieger: 40-47

Military vintage style: 32-38

Dress: 34-40

Casual sport: 40-43

G-Shock-Sky's the limit.

Seiko Arnie: Big-bigger

I like all sizes:

  • small (up to 34mm, and 33mm is the best size)

  • medium (34mm to 36mm)

  • large (36mm to 38mm)

Sadly I have a couple watches in cartoonishly larger sizes that are essentially unwearable and hideous to boot. Some masochists seem to enjoy such things.

ยท

I have a 7 1/4 inch wrist and I violate my size limit, 42mm diameter and 48mm lug to lug for only one watch: my stoopid fun Nixon, The Unit. Yes, it is the middle one. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘

Personally now, I feel I've started appreciating the class and elegant wrist presence a "smaller" watch can bring, not too mention the opportunity for dials to really show off what they can do when confined to a smaller area and thus finer detail. I can't remember exactly who but a well-known YouTuber a year or so ago reviewed a Seagull 1963 in 38 mm and I thought that might have hit the Sweet spot for my wrist granted I have an elephant trunk for a wrist so. Lol.

ยท

Personally. There is no such thing accept when the lugs are sticking past you wrist on both sides. Even then I have watches that are a smidge larger lug wise from why I just explained but I adore the Watch to much and made the exception.

ยท

I wear watches between 34-45mm. But thereโ€™s more to perceived size than just diameter. I tried on the Speedmaster 38, and thought it looked too small on my 6.7โ€ wrist, while the smaller Explorer 36 looked better. The number of factors that affect perceived size is extensive: factors like style, lug-to-lug distance, thickness (even different aspects of thickness, like if the case back and/or crystal are domed or flat), dial and case colors, bezel thickness, case shape, and even bracelet/strap matter I tried on the Tudor Ranger recently, and found the watch on the bracelet looked bigger than it did on the strap)

Within a certain range, youโ€™re not going to really know if a watch is right for you until you try it on. Trying to reduce it to a number or couple of numbers will just lead you to not try stuff that might work for you.

Until the sales guys at my regular multi brand ad noticed my preference for larger watches never gave my wrist size or my favourite brands any thought, also never bothered measuring but finally learned that my wrists are just over 8 inches but might be getting a bit thinner due to my age. My smallest watch that I wear with any regularity is a 38mm Grand Seiko but somehow wears bigger than my 39mm Tudor Ranger. I have worn vintage watches that were as small as 35mm but would never buy any modern watch smaller than 38mm, still enjoy some of my 48mm Breitling and Panerai watches a great deal. There does appear to be a trend with certain brands pushing uni sex size watches which means bigger for the ladies and smaller for the gents.

I have a 6.5 inch wrist, but I do not feel comfortable with anything under 38mm. 42 or 44 mm is about the biggest I would go but have a couple of exceptions. I would say my sweet spot is 40mm.

I would agree with you on that, except a few watches that technically would and do fit my wrist end up just being big, the lug to lug and dims are a good judgement of how they will fit in a way that's why I like cheap seikos, they can get big but remain stubby in the lug department so I know even if I don't try it there's a fair chance it will fit me

The tank was what got me thinking it's so small yet so lovely you cannot not wear it

I have a full range from a small Tank and a 29mm GS to a 42mm diver. My only real limitation is the lug-to-lug fitting on my small round wrist. It has to be comfortable, but I don't really have a preference on looks when it comes to size.

I feel same with other people. Like I'll see a tiny watch on a big wrist and I love it. Same with a small dude rocking a giant watch. It's all about personal style and how you pair it

And attitude

Haha that's what I was thinking that's why I asked I just find it interesting what people wear. In the end enjoy it it's your wrist ๐Ÿ™‚

It's a fun alternative to a G-Shock. I have a rule to never spend more than $50 on a digital watch. I have a few Casios, and I am sure the Nixon isn't as tough as a G-Shock but it's fun to wear. Besides, I have a W218 with nifty bull bars, so I'm fine with it.

I am seriously jealous, I love digital watches but can't wear one. When I was a kid someone told me something that's really dumb and stupid but stuck with me to this day and because of that I can't wear digital watches ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿคฃ

Small for dress, big for sports...

ยท

I have a 7.5+ wrist and wear anything from a small Omega Seamaster quartz (wears like a 35mm square) up to a Lunar Pilot (45mm). If I like it I wear it, that goes above the size (within reason).

ยท

I used to think that 42mm and 50mm lug to lug was the upper limit and would wear anything from 36-42. Then I got this and I love it (48/51/16)

ยท

I wear watches ranging from 35 to 70 MMS love them all

ยท

Wow.

7.1 inch wrist.

Dressy open dial - 39-40

Sporty open dial - 40.5-41

Diver with bezel 41-43.

ยท

For my 6.5โ€ (165mm) wrist, Iโ€™d say 36-38mm is sweet spot. I have vintage examples as small as 33mm and divers and sports as large as 42.5mm. And they all look fine. ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿป

ยท

I have some vintage starting at 34mm and other watches all the way up to 45-46mm, all good at 19cm wrist size. It is more lug to lug and overall appeal on wrist that matters to me

Lmao fair enough, I got a ton of replies here and it's nice to see people wearing what they want, that's what keeps the lovely industry going ๐Ÿ˜„
