What do you use your watch for????

Sup watch nerds.... Wanted to post another question to y'all. Why do you wear a watch.

Are you like me, to tell the time.

Or do you like the way it looks on your wrist.

Or are you a trend chaser do you like to be fashionable.

Or are you, a show off. You enjoy the status and prestige an expensive watch brings. ( I grew up in Africa and for some reason wearing a Rolex or Rado meant you were a boss or some crap like that still don't get it but I don't judge)

Im cool with all types. It's your life and wrist so go out there and strut that stuff but I'm always curious because I've spoken to people who don't care about accuracy and just enjoy having a watch as part of their attire while others are like me. We still use our watches to tell the time daily.

Just wanted to make an edit, on the esthetics, I'm guessing we all like the way they look or we wouldn't wear them but I was specifically speaking about wearing a watch because of how it looks and not it's function. I met someone once who wore a broken watch but like the way it looked. If that makes sense

Final update... Thanks to everyone who commented on the post got some really nice and genuinely good replies. Some weird ones and some funny ones too. As always thanks for being civil and honest. Have a great weekend y'all and wear them watches with pride.

Primarily to tell the time. If I'm going to wear a watch it might as well look good too (another reason I won't have a smart watch). No interested in following trends or showing off.

·

I like the mechanics of watch builds, and the variety of aesthetic features, but I'm personally drawn most to these little things that dictate the pace of our existence and I like all types.

·

all the above and I also use the Chronos and the Divers (time bezel) for cooking

·

I use my watch to time things all day long. Breaks, lunches, cooking, work, overtime billing, laundry, dog walks ect. Timing bezels are my favorite thing right now.

I also have to like the look of it too, Otherwise I won't wear it.

While I get the argument against smatwatches I feel they are useful for older people who need to keep track of various stuff like heart rate etc my mother wears a traditional watch except for when she does yoga I bought her a Samsung smartwatch for that and she wears it for her exercises. And she was the one who got me into watches when I was a kid ( got me my first watch)

Haha for real first person I've met who does that that's cool. I just use a regular watch and math 🤣

·

To tell the time, I like the feel of a mechanical timepiece on my wrist at all hours of each and every day.

Yeah, fully understand why they work for some. I don't like the way they look and that is what I look for in a watch, it has to look good to my eyes.

Time, Looks, and occasionally cooking/timer. Mostly so I can figure out if I’m late for work when I wake up 😂

Fair enough can't argue with that

A little of all things:

I genuinely like to know the time without getting a bunch of annoying notifications.

I use the timing bezel to time random things.

I like the pretty of how they look and match them to my outfits, they are jewelry afterall

And, yes, sometimes I like the flex. If I'm going to a nice restaurant, on vacation, or shopping I'll wear the appropriate watch to also tell status

·

Same 🤣

Glad we’re on the same page 😂😂

·

More to tell the time but I love the look and knowing sometimes im the only one with a watch on.

·

Tell time and date is first priority but i also have to like the way it looks since i stare at it multiple times in one day.

I dont fish for compliments or purposely flash my watch to people to get noticed, but it feels good when someone does give a positive comment on it- in most situations nobody in public really cares to compliment you on what watch youre wearing. That's why we have wrist shots on watch forums? 😄

·

It's mostly to tell time, but there is an element of keeping the past alive. Many of my watches were possessions very close to people, usually one of the first things to be put on and last things to be taken off. One day we will all pass on and these little trinkets will be left behind for others to discover and love again. I am keeping a little part of some strangers somewhere alive. I like to imagine that they look down on me and smile knowing that I also get joy from the same watch they did. My watchmaker, who is genuinely my hero, is not going to live forever, so me making memories and learning about this hobby is making the most of the world of horology in my small town.

It's a fashion and function thing, yes, but to me, it's also a mildly spiritual thing too.

Finally someone who agrees it's ok to flex/ show off once in a while, you have earned that beautiful watch so why not wear it

·

Primarily to read the time. I don't care what the watch is worth or how it looks for another person, I really don't. I have to like it, that's the main point. Maybe I tend to look for a watch that matches my outfit and/or activities, but that is it.

·

Above all accurate time keeping

Honestly long long long very long time ago when the knights of the round table were my neighbours,I used to be perfectly fine just gazing at my sun dial like the dog,but seen as we get no sun in our fine England, had to change to watches,so short, power reserve ran out of my sun dial.😎🤣

·

To tell the time, once a day, tell the date, and if I am too lost also he day. Also to look at them. I jus love them.

·

Wearing a watch was a transition into adulthood to me. A proper man wears a watch, because he has people to meet and places to me. Part of that philosophy probably came from my paternal grandfather, who lived with my parents when I was a child. He wore a three piece suit on Sunday walks, and was using a walking cane if he felt like it. A hat was also obligatory.

At first I thought it was only convention, but it was more of that. He wanted to show the world the best side of himself. Why? Because he lived through wars and famines, and it was a way to celebrate that these things were in the past.

Pictures of myself as a teenager mostly showed me wearing a dress shirt and a watch, and my maternal grandfather's signature ring. Many of my friends were into ballroom dancing.

A smartwatch to me is a tool, useful for some, but not for others. A watch is a form of jewelry.

·

Pretty much the same as most on here; all of the above. When I'm checking the time it's more enjoyable if it's via a timepiece I love.

·

Two things: a way to tell the date (not the time) and an accessory/jewlery piece. It's generally hard for ne to read the time quickly, hence I don't use my watches to tell the time. Though I always try to keep em pitch perfect on the time (its an obsession).

I've worn a watch since elementary school, for about 40 years now. I can't think of a time when I didn't consistently wear a watch. I feel naked without one, especially if I leave the house without a watch on, which rarely ever happens. It was always to tell time, except for a brief period in the late 80s. Swatches were fashionable, and a lot better at that than telling the time (at least the two I have). Now, I just buy what I like. I don't have one single watch that I paid over $350 for, so it's definitely not for showing off. I don't personally know many people that are into watches, so it's not a competition, either. If it were, I'd probably lose.

Image

Im in a similar boat as yourself I have worn a watch every single day for the last 25 years, when I don't wear one it feels weird. It's the same reason why I still use it to tell the time. It was good enough for me when I was a kid and it still is. And like yourself as well I haven't spent more than 300$ on a watch. I love them they are beautiful amazing little things but they will always be a tool to me🙂

·

I always answer this question the same, so some of y’all may have seen this. I’m an expeditor at a fine dining restaurant, in the restaurant no one needs to be keeping a closer eye on timing than me.

Image

The Ranger is perfectly legible, accurate enough to set with our POS system and keep time, amd handsome enough to wear with a suit. It looks fine as it acquires a bit of scratches from smacking the bric a brac of the kitchen and the T-Fit comes in handy, when it gets hot I can quickly open it up a bit.

This job, requiring a watch more or less, is what began the obsession for me. Of course I love the aesthetic and craft of all of it too.

·
BerserkerTK

Nerds are cool too mate 😁 if you take offence at that I'm sorry your not cool

Dammit, now I’m confused.

·

To be honest to check the date first, time second. Bought one watch without a date complication and the number of times that beautiful watch frustrated me….

·

I think for me, I wanted to say the first option but it’s a combination of them all.

I noticed on a recent WRUW post I’d not set the watch I was wearing, so I guess liking the way it looks is a factor too!

I would say that I don’t like to be fashionable but I like vintage which is still chasing fashion, albeit not contemporary fashion.

Status and prestige in a way but not to others, more to myself. I’m from a working class family in northern England. Far from an impoverished upbringing but not much in the way of luxury goods, so a nice watch is a reminder to me about being fortunate to have the opportunities I’ve had.

Also, watches are ace to geek out about. There are fancy materials, complicated tiny bits, crystals, Top Trumps worthy level of statistics and a whole lexicon. Now they are a bit superfluous, wearing one makes me feel part of this club of geeks!

·

I am of a similar mind too. Just love how the watch works/looks/functions. Just turned my Always on display off on my phone just because its useless to me.
