Astra Owners (Thoughts/Concerns)

I, like many others, received my new Lorier Astra a couple weeks ago... and although I absolutely love the design, I've found myself a little bummed by the quality and noise. Anyone else feeling this way or maybe have another way for me to think about it? For example, I was wearing it yesterday while driving on a bumpy road, and couldn't believe how loud the rotor was as I drove. It's making me want to wear it less, and just curious if anyone can relate. And it's light, which I was looking for, but it's almost too light, if you know what I mean. Any thoughts, Lorier/Astra owners?

I have the astra and had the flacon with the same movement. The myiotas are notorios for loud rotor noise. Personally it doesnt bother me, i rarely notice it. It's a good movement, even pretty nicely decorated

I've heard it's a good movement... was just pretty surprised by the noise.

I don't have a Lorier, but I have a watch with a Miyota 9 series movement. And to be honest with you, I have no idea why people are saying this movement is loud. I work from home where there's really no ambient noise. I might be streaming some music from time to time, but it's real low. I have my speakers set to 8 and the website set to about 50%. And I never hear the rotor spinning when I'm moving around the office. Or when I get up to get some water or use the head.

If it bothers you so, I'll give you $250 for it so you can get something not so loud.

Miyotas are known to be a bit loud.

Haha, I love the offer... Could it be the way it sits in this particular watch?

You know, I'm not a watch maker so I really couldn't tell you. I only have the one watch with the Miyota movement so I can't even compare it to others I own. Miyota's that is. I do however own 3 Seiko's. Two 7S26's and a 4R36. The 4R36 is fine, but both of the 7S26's are louder than my Miyota. Go figure. I never see anyone post how loud those Seiko's are, but yet everyone says how loud the Miyota is. I wonder how much of it is: well I heard it on the interwebs so it must be true and it just gets repeated.

Believe me, I would love to not be hearing what I'm hearing, especially after being super excited about a new watch :)

I think the design of the watch has a lot to do with whether we end up hearing the movements. I have two watches with miyota 9 series movements. The pilot watch is loud and the diver is... not quiet, but maybe just "normal." I could imagine how a dress watch case, like the Astra, wouldn't do a lot to block the sound coming out, but I don't know if that's actually the reason.

I have the same watch. I haven't noticed the noise, but I am partially deaf in one ear from my time in the navy. I will say that it's a beautiful watch that I need to wear more. I am a bigger guy and like a larger watch. It nice for me to switch it up. I have a metal bracelet. You inspired me to put on a different one.

Super beautiful for sure. Just a little bummed about the (extra) noise.

The blue dial and strap looks great! Rotor noise never bothered me. I like to know the mechanics are working. In the grand scheme of things the rotor noise it’s not loud though it is subjective. In terms of weight changing to a bracelet can add mass.

Miyota 9000 series movements are great I can hear it in my Vaer somtimed when it spins fast. But its kept great time for years

·

The price point comes at a cost and this is one of them.

Personally I don’t mind it too much but after getting higher end movements I don’t think I’ll get another similar Miyota with loud sound unless it’s exceptional or limited edition dial that I love

·

Nice watch! I personally love the whirring sound on my Lorier. Adds a bit of character. I can see how it might not be for everyone though.

·

The rotor noise is part of the charm for me. Plus as everyone has mentioned, the Miyota 9000 movement is robust and very accurate. I recommend the bracelet as well. Lorier really nails the "vintage inspired" theme better than anyone else and I like that I can spot the influences from the watches our fathers and grandfathers used to own. Plus the Astra kills my desire to buy a vintage Rolex or Tudor Date just, so there's that benefit as well.

I don’t own this particular watch but I can say that I have sold an Orient Bambino and a 36mm SMP300 because of their loud rotors. Beautiful Astra, by the way.

Thank you! And yeah, hoping I get used to it, because the watch is super cool.

·
Adam21

that's honestly really weird. Maybe it has to with the type of caseback?

It's certainly a possibilty. Some of mine were noisier than others but I'd hear them all at certain times throughout the day. It's a commonly reported thing on the Miyota 9 series, and a lot of other unidirectional winding rotors. It's not really an issue, but more just part of the design of the movements winding system itself.

Ha my 36mm SMP was noisy too. That's not why I sold it but I did notice the noise a bit more than normal.

Yea, it was just one of their older movements. There were a variety of reasons I sold it - one being the size felt much smaller than 36mm - and with it also being noisy, it had to go. It definitely wears like a 34 though.

·
thisjeffmartin

Yeah, might just need to get used to it.

I find with a bit of time I can get used to most things watch related. Just have to live with it for a bit.

It definitely wore small. The dial is tiny on that thing. I'd love to have the 41mm version of that era someday.

It’s a hit or miss. Some Miyotas aren’t as bad when it comes to the whirring rotor. If it bugs you, you can always convert it to handwind only by taking the automatic works off. If not, fancy selling it?

·

It's normal, Miyota's are loud whenever the rotor freespins. Just thank your lucky stars it's a 9000 series and not an 8000 series movement. Now those can be loud.

Same, hence why I'm fond of the Seiko Kinetics. Now those are loud.

I have a Miyota Series 8 in a solid case, screwdown closed back and screwdown crown (Citizen NY0040 diver). I hear the rotor very rarely during the day in my quiet home. Some days I never notice it.

I can feel occasionally the rotor spinning with the skin of the wrist. I find it interesting and not annoying at all.

My Swatch quartz ticking in the night was lots more annoying. Once you hear it you can't escape 😱

·

My Montbalnc Geosphere is so noisey and rattly especially when driving. I love it but the sound tempers the wearing enjoyment for me. Had it a year it’s got no worse, run exceptionally well but it’s just so bloody noisey, especially for the price tag.

Considered selling it because it bothers me on a bad day.

Will hopefully get used to it... not ready to sell it yet?

·

never noticed any noise from the neptune tbh.

Great looking #lorier Jeff 👌🏻
