Lady's GMT

Okay Crunchers! I have a question for you:

My darling wife has accepted a cabin crew position with a large international airline...so I thought a nice #gmtwatch would be a suitable gift this Christmas.

However, there is a dress code (corporate branding and all that) so it needs to be a suitably "feminine" style i.e., not a chunky #rolexgmt and for bonus points shouldn't be too bulky or colourful (except for red. Red is Okay as it matches the uniform).

All brands considered, hopefully below $500, automatic or quartz, and I'll probably swap out the bracelet/band for her.

Appreciation for your tips and suggestions in the comments below.

That's a tall order.  Nothing suitable comes to mind right off.  I imagine something like a baby G Shock wouldn't be classy enough?   And the Seiko 5 GMT is too toolish?

Consider the Abingdon Amelia GMT named after a relatively famous female pilot and built by another who flew Airbuses.  The watch features a Rhonda Swiss quartz movement and a backup E6B flight calculator.  The steel case version can be had for $419.00 with white or black dial.  The watch is rated a perfect 5 stars by 50 people.

What is a feminine size?

The Timex Q GMT matches your criteria.

You might check out Abingdon watch as well.  They have some interesting quartz GMTs in smaller sizes.

Not an actual GMT but the rotating bezel can track a second time zone and keeps the case smaller. Plus it’s got a pop of red in it. Yema is a pretty cool brand too

I personally find a 12 hour bezel a better way to track a second timezone than a GMT complication.

Ah! I heard about #Abingdon last week actually - Female pilots making watches for female pilots. Excellent!

Yes, thanks to Google's advertising algorithm the #yema is on my list.

The Seiko 5 GMT is where I would go, but when trying one on for myself the other day, it was heavily critiqued as "ugly", and "crap" by my wife. 😜

I would like one myself....

·

Looking around, it seems like nobody makes a GMT under 38mm.  I think you may have to go digital if you want to get smaller.

·

Isn't there a Victornox Ladies Maverick GMT around $500?

Good recommendations here. Remember, you can always swap the strap 😊

·

Far cry from a GMT, but the Seiko Women's SWR053 Essential Collection seems very classy and she won't need to worry about knocking it around.

Found this too which fits in the budget if you wanted a GMT and can swop out the strap.

Put a Glycine Airman 36mm (one with a GMT hand, since she lives in one city and could be flying between two other cities, so she may need to track 3 time zones) on a bright red leather strap from ABP. Speaking as a lady myself, that would be one hell of a look.

Thanks to everyone for the ideas. I'm thinking this #casio piece might fit the bill given the lack of #ladys oriented #gmts. Home timezone and work timezone 😜

I was going to recommend a dual time display as well - way dressier than a sporty GMT.

Here is a cute one from Fossil, $160 😃 https://www.fossil.com/en-us/products/raquel-dual-time-brown-sugar-eco-leather-watch/ES5228.html

The new Vario watch - Versa. It is reversible (like a JLC Reverso) but vertically unlike the Reverso which is horizontal. Two dial faces and thus two time zones. One is a colourful dial and the other is a formal dial. And under 500$.

Releasing next Wednesday.

Forgot to add that:

One of the dials is an enamel dial.

And there's a red variant too!

And they're Swiss Quartz with 6 year warranty.

Yes! I was only vaguely aware that these existed (although I have a feeling I have seen a vintage #cartier  one... but that would be waaaaay outside my budget!). A chunky, sports #gmt is just not going to cut it. I will have a look at #fossil - both my wife and I are diametrically opposed to rose gold - hence the idea of the Casio above (I dunno we're weird). In #stainlesssteel I am likely to "borrow it" as well 😜 (I generally don't believe in the concept of a "#ladys" watch. There are big watches and small watches! That's it! 😂) This is awesome. Thanks!

Yeah, the problem I am having with this whole question is it throws up more timepieces that I want rather than finding something for my gal! 😜 I love this, but the engineer in me says the reversing mechanism is a(nother) potential point of failure - cabin crew are forever pushing heavy things, bumping into stuff, etc. (and she'll admit - my wife is a touch clumsy as well at times!)

Nevertheless, this is v. cool!

Without looking, I am going to say the blue dial is the enamel one? I have wanted the #seiko #presage blue enamel dial forever! Also: I do like me some #swiss #quartz. I'm also on the lookout for a quartz #omega #deville if anyone is reading this and has one they want to let go, or can point me towards one!

I have nothing against digital per se, but with my romantic notions of watches in general and images of well-appointed cabin crew jetting off around the world, digital wasnt my go to.

Makes me want to watch that series Pan Am with @christinaRicci... does anyone remember that?

I bet they all wear #apple watches anyway 😭.

Glycine still maintain the tradition of the 36mm GMT

This is a hot tip!

I do find it annoying that

  1. small(er) watches of this kind are few and far between
  2. anything under #38mm  is (at least tacitly) referred to as a "#ladys" watch.

I wear sub-38mm watches all the time. To wit, I've got a 36mm #haighandhastings M1 diver on today:

Haigh & Hastings ANZAC Commemorative M1.

That said, my wife has stolen my #seiko 2625-0010:

But given its #vintageseiko heritage, its impractical for her needs in the air.

Nice! I believe the red would be within required brand colours as well! I think I am going to have to put up a poll since the #glycine and the #yema keep coming up as popular options.

Ah, that's #abington called out again. Having done a little more research since I posted, Abington has some really nice pieces!

I’m with you, I greatly prefer mechanicals watches. Im coming around to high quality quartz, but there’s just no romance in it.

I think so. Not sure. The release is on the 23rd.
