Has anyone in public ever complimented your watch?

I see people say things like "I get so many compliments on this watch." I wear a watch every single day, am out in public a lot, and have never received a single compliment on any watch I have. This means that the watch is not worth complimenting, people are afraid to approach me, or (likely) they just don't notice or care. Has anyone ever complimented your watch? Tell the truth now. If so, which watch?

Maybe 3 times in 50 years. All when I was in a watch shop.

I sometimes think that those who claim to get compliments all the time walk around wearing a short sleeved shit that says "Ask me about my watch" on the back whilst flailing their arms like Bernstein conducting Beethovens 9th.

·

I have had a few compliments on watches, from a cheap microbrand, to a slightly more expensive CW C60 Bronze.

Image

They were ono-on-one interactions with people(bartender, barber, etc...), not just random people saying "nice watch" when walking down Rideau St..

·

I have had a few people comment on it over the years. I have a current co-worker who hates NATO bands on watches and she always comments when I wear them. Something along the lines of, "I liked the watch you wore Monday better than that one, it looked more professional." I always chuckle either way.

·

Nope, nobody in public. My Mom is the only person to notice my watches and then patiently listens to me while I drone on about it’s history, movement, etc.

But hey, she’s my mom!

As others have said, nobody cares about your watch, lol.

·

Only once and it was because we were both wearing Casio Duros in a supermarket.

·

Can't really remember specific examples but I'd say my PRX is the one that gets the most comments on when talking to people I personally know. Random people don't care really.

Therefore, as a watch enthusiast, I feel free to comment on somebody's watch if it catches my eye, because I know that sometimes that little compliment on a special piece can make our day a bit better to one of us.

·

Yes several times, but only if I count back over many years. And it's never the expensive watches or those I'd expect/ hope to get comments on. These are the ones I remember:

Raketa Goroda (several times, probably cos it looks huge)

Moels 528 (several times in a short period of ownership, it's got real presence)

Poljot De Luxe (she thought it was really expensive, I didn't correct her)

Seiko Pogue (eye-catching on a sunny day)

Briston Clubmaster, red (in the VC boutique of all places - I was just horrified that I'd worn a quartz, but he liked the acetate. And no, the SA wasn't trying to ingratiate himself, he's not made more than passing comments about others).

·

Only my Mickey Mouse watch or when wearing a brightly striped NATO.

I couldn't agree with this more. Everytime I see someone wearing something if I have a moment I try and stop and say even simple things like 'I like your watch'

I somehow have been fortunate to get compliments on my watches, mostly on watches I don't expect, I have a Timex Waterbury that gets alot of notice and also a Moonswatch Jupiter that gets commented on by both watch people and normal people.

Thank you for posting. It made me remember watches I have complimented. These were all on people I knew at least a little. There was a cream color Timex Expedition, a blue dial Timex, a no-name lady's watch that she said was a Walmart special and was nevertheless a pretty little thing, and a really sharp black dial Wenger dress? / sports? watch.

About 35 years ago I used to work with a guy who had a Submariner. I remember it as being gold with a blue dial. Absolutely spectacular. Somehow it improved our shift because he was wearing that watch. We always used to ask him what time it was. Of course, our department was filled with clocks and computers, but we didn't care about any of that - we wanted to know the official ROLEX time. Once when I asked him what time it was, he looked at his Rolex and said, "Tom, it's five minutes later than the last time you asked me what time it was."

When I wear my Dan Henry 1964 Tricompax Panda...it's a hell of a watch.

·

I can backhand people across the face without them noticing the watch. I live amongst barbarians.

I'll have to look that one up. I've seen Dan Henrys on video and every single one is really sharp and for a good price. And they have quartzes and I have nothing against quartz.

I think it’s more that most people you meet aren’t interested one iota about watches. 20 years with a SS Rolex, maybe 5 compliments, from watch people or if they saw the word Rolex. 4 years with a Tudor GMT, no compliments until I put it on a red strap, and the compliments were more about the strap than the watch.

Two and a half weeks with a pink Seiko 5, more than a dozen compliments, all about the pink dial. 😂

Me I don’t care, but it’s a bit nice if someone notices you watch.

These barbarians then shall die when their wristwatch-less armies arrive late to battle.

Both? That's great. What do you have? Quartz or auto? What sizes and colors? There are many choices, aren't there? I've never seen one in person but they sure are sharp in photos and videos.

I have a blue dial quartz piece unique and a regular green waffle dial automatic. They recive compliments on a regular basis.

·

Haven't had any compliments until now man 😄, people here are wearing smartwatches everyday and those who are wearing analog watches belongs to a ancient group to them I guess 😂😂

·

It’s happened only a couple of times with and I’ve been collecting for decades. The two time it happened were when I was wearing my Tudor BB bronze. That’s it

·

Only a few times. A sales person liked a Parnis homage of a PAM I was wearing that cost about £70, and a nurse that took my blood liked an SKX I used to won with a Pepsi dial. All my more expensive watches have never been noticed

·
ChronoGuy

Yes - many times. But then again, my colleagues know that I am a watch collector so some of it may be genuine and some may be those looking to butter me up...

Of course, you get complimented when you are in watch boutiques...first rule of sales...compliment the potential customer on something...

Genuine compliments happen as well, but they don't always follow the rule of the well-known brand or the most expensive looking watch...

These pretty routinely result in compliments...with the AP Code 11.59 getting the most of all...

Image

Followed by the LUC Lunar One...

Image

Followed by the VC Overseas...

Image

Then the TAG Heuer Carrera in red...

Image

And the Dark Lord...

Image

There are others, but the above are the most consistent that receive compliments.

An outlier...this one routinely receive compliments from women...

That's 'Quite' a lineup.

I got in a conversation with a guy because he has wearing an Omega Speedmaster. I was wearing an orange Scuba Dude, and I was almost embarrassed to answer when he asked about my watch. But he was immediately interested because he’d heard of Vostok but never seen one in the flesh. The whole thing made me chuckle.

·

I never get any comments on my watch, but last week, I got two! Once was in line for coffee. The other was at a restaurant by the waiter. Turns out he had worked at Tourneau before.

Pagani Design lol.

More than once.

Never mistaken for another watch either.

Have you heard of that new company Pagani Design Design? They make homages of Pagani watches.

·
Brietside

Yes, buts it's rare. So much that I actually remember them and it's only been three compliments and it's always been on the same watch

1.) My optician, who loves it. Simply said "what a fantastic watch, stunning".

2.) 2 separate friend who are into watches. (One said "wow a brietling! That's amazing") the other "I'm very jealous".

Ive learned that if your spending thousands on a timepiece to attract compliments from other people and for people to notice you will probably be disappointed.

There are cheaper ways of achieving this, and I'd tell you to buy a t-shirt or pair of brightly coloured sneakers instead.

Watches are pretty much for the warer and the occasional rare passer bye.

However they are beautiful and don't let that put you off. Just don't expect everyone else to notice your great timepiece.

I've never gotten a compliment nor am I looking for them. I have about 30 watches, none costing more than $180. I just didn't believe all the "watch compliment" stuff, but I believe it now since so many on WatchCrunch have in fact received compliments. That's great, and I'm happy to be proven wrong in this case. Thanks for your response too, I'm glad you've received compliments.

I dont think people go to such lengths as complimenting unless of course they are into that, intentionally or unintentionally. But i think some do take note but never bring it up in conversation..

Thank you for your response. That's what I used to think too. But I would hear so many people talk about others complimenting their watches. Now that I've joined WatchCrunch, I thought, what better place to post the question. And judging from the numerous affirmative answers I've received on this post, I was wrong. Many people have had others compliment their watches.

·

a few teachers in my highschool and a few classmates but really that’s it, family members sometimes do notice them and the name on the dial.

·
Catskinner

Nobody ever complimented me on a watch I'm wearing, maybe it's because I don't mingle with cool people.

Maybe I'm in good shape then.

I was at the Atlanta Zoo two years ago and a guy came up to me to compliment me on my Seiko Tuna. I had a co-worker and my current girlfriend compliment me on my Monta Noble in Pink, both unprompted. I had a TSA agent one time compliment me on my Omega Aqua Terra when I was going through security. So, it happens from time to time.

They all had good taste.
