โ—‡ UNDERRATED โ—‡

In your opinion, what brand or watch do you think is underrated?

As a brand, I think Bulova has done a lot for the watch world to be where they actually are. (Lunar Pilot, Accutron, Curve, CIA stuff, etc)

I agree with you about Bulova. They have a great history. I think also that their parent brand, Citizen, is also underrated. I think their eco-drive watches are also great and are on par if not better than Seiko. Also, their movement manufacturer, Miyota, produces some of the most popular movements used by other manufacturers and microbrands.

ยท

I agree with you on Bulova being under-rated. IMHO, Citizen and Orient don't get enough credit either ...

ยท

Bulova is underrated , Timex is oddly dismissed, some microbrands seem oddly placed: I canโ€™t figure out the schofield, bremont, farer, christopher ward ranking

ยท

Jaeger LeCoultre

ยท

For me I think of 3. Citizen, Orient, Bulova. I own a Orient and next on my list will be a Bulova and a Citizen.

ยท

Bulova is first to my mind with great designs

ยท

Shinola pops to mind. All the flak they caught for not being โ€˜made in Americaโ€™-enough was a bit silly. They are pricey for sure but rather nice looking and the quartz is as accurate over long term as a Lunar Pilot. Their shops have great service to boot. They have helped me quite a bit more than they needed to, including a free, no questions asked, bracelet swap after I lost the collar in a pin and collar style bracelet.

On the subject of Bulova I agree mostly, but I think they make a lot of very ugly stuff too. The new GMT Devil Divers are great and I do like the Lunar Pilot (though I am selling mine currently on eBay if you want one. Bid is just under $230 and Iโ€™d love sending it to a member of this site).

I will tilt at this windmill until someone takes my cold stiff hand off of the keyboard. When we say that a brand is "underrated" we are really saying that we like and appreciate a brand more than we perceive others do.

No brand is "underrated". Bulova is not underrated.

ยท

Definitely Citizen, I think it is the only brand that I could do a one brand collection with.

ยท

I think they are all rated exactly as they should be.

I believe underrated is better defined as not being rated as it should be, often times this refers to a competitor of similar or equal quality being more loved for reasons unsaid.

The ideology behind Bulova being labeled as โ€œunderratedโ€ comes as follows: few brands can say they have impacted the watch world as Bulova has, horology would not quite be the same without them, from high quality quartz movements, to the accutron, to being responsible for the first ever television advertisement. The other companies with similar historical significance to horology are beloved by watch enthusiasts and one often gladly pays a major premium for a watch with such rich history. With Bulova, we do not see the same love. Often in the horological community Bulova is somewhat frowned upon, and not rarely being labeled as a โ€œMall Watchโ€. Now whether these mall watch claims are true are completely subjective, as labeling and belittling things is completely useless, but this much is to be said about Bulova: theyโ€™re underrated. Whether quartz is your gig or not, or imported movements are your gig or not, they still produce great timepieces at times, and still innovate in certain ways.

100% correct. I'll stand up and applaud.

I would say Ball doesn't receive the recognition I think they should.

beaume mercier beaumatic sports are amazing . its just that no one browses the โ€œ sailingโ€ watches section .Because why would you ?? They should call it โ€œ dressier diversโ€ insteadโ€or โ€œ divers for the guy on the boat โ€œ . and they would fly off the shelf

#certina comes to mind but I hesitate to call the brand underrated - I think they have a heap of underrated watches, mainly their Action Divers and re-issues.

Image

A lot of their range are pretty average 'mall watches' but they know how to re-issue their classics

Image

The quality per dollar spent is as good as it gets for an established Swiss brand too.

ยท

I'm a big fan of bulova, the lunar pilot is one of my favorite. The thing is that 90% of their watches look cheap. Next time you're at the mall look at watches they sell they look like fashion watches.

ยท

I'll agree with Bulova, Timex and Citizen

Indeed. Such comments are common across all kinds of fandoms. A slightly different example, but someone was opining on X the other day, that a particular book series was 'underrated'. I pointed out that when the books came out... 20-odd years ago... there was much praise going on, wall to wall reviews, the whole nine yards. Just because they have discovered the books in recent times and don't see people raving on about them doesn't make them underrated. They're just not top of mind for loads of people to be talking about these days, no matter how many times they've re-read them and no matter how much they adore them. They're just not going to rave on to social media about them, ad nauseum, 20 years later. But that doesn't change the quality of the books or the affection for them. Perception is reality, as the old saying goes, and people get some odd thoughts.

ยท

Grand seiko and I mean on the wider spectrum out of the watch community, people ether haven't heard of them or think it's just a seiko.

The Foundation trilogy is underrated. (Hari Seldon knew that I would write that.)

They should change name from grand seiko. U know like tudor is to rolex.

From a marketing stand point maybe, but they would lose loyal base that already exists so would be really bad idea for the brand, and most like me love them because there under rated ๐Ÿ‘Œhope they stay that way.

ยท

In my opinion the Railmaster (even as an Omega) is absolutely underrated. There are that less pictures, posts of or recommendations for it.

ยท

Sinn + Oris - they are excellent value for the money. Great finishing and ultrareliable.

ยท

Fortis, Sinn, Oris, Weiss.

ยท

Zenith for me, without a doubt. Outstanding quality and craftsmanship.

They also dare a lot in terms of design. Not everything is a hit, of course, but it doesnโ€™t have to be. โญ๏ธ

ยท

I do not think so. the market is open to all brands but customers who make choices that make those brands a success or a failure.

We have to support the micro brands
