40mm vs 36mm

Tofay, my 67 years old Co Worker and former government official, pulls this out of an old cloth bag. It was a Grand Seiko SBGX009. After placing it next to my 40mm Omega Railmaster, I felt 36mm might just be the perfect size for me....

Looks great on the wrist - your coworker has great taste! 🍻

Vintage GS has a certain charm in it 😍

I feel that 36mm is the next best thing to 35mm. And 35mm is the next best thing to 34mm, while 34mm is the next best thing to 33mm. 32mm is nice too.

None are as perfect as a 31mm though

44mm is ok, 46mm might be just a bit easier to wear but 48mm is the gold standard in my opinion. The best day of my life was when I did not need to attend anymore meetings with guys wearing 36mm two tone Rolex watches. I started my own agency concentrating on issues not related to the size of my timepieces. I have been an enthusiast most of my life so my joy for watches that suit me are not a casual affectation.

Think 38 might be slightly better.

Nice to see an older Grand Seiko adequately demostrating why the brand didn't take off in the USA till they changed the logo/name location and elimnated the large SEIKO script. CItizen made the same mistake with the Campanola line. The thing is both Seiko and Citizen are associated with good solid inexpensive watches in the US not luxury watches like Grand Seiko and Campanola. I doubt Lexus would be as successful as it is in the US if they had marketed them as Toyotas which is who makes them. Simply the US market's fixation with names.

OMG!! That Omega looks like an homage to the Corguet Railmaster!! 😉

Both look good on your wrist!

My regular ad still had a few older GS watches that was also marked Seiko. He has collectors who favour the same watch but with both Seiko and Grand Seiko which was interesting and also logical.

I have the 55th Anniversary Grand Seiko edition with the prominent Seiko script. Greatt watch. Someone once said of these types (prominent Seiko script) of Grand Seikos are stealth luxury as nobody except watch people think it is anything other than a run of the mill Seiko. 😎

Looks good, what size us your wrist?

·

PMR, you’re very knowledgeable imo. I’d love to try a 36mm but my wrist is 8.2 inches so I think the L2L needs to be 45+. Any sub $500 watches you can suggest with close to those dimensions? Thx in advance.

Mr Jones Watches' 36mm cases have a 46mm L2L, but their dials and the like are rather niche. And I'm far from knowledgeable.

Might as well get a lady Datejust 😂

I think both look swell.

36mm is the perfect size for everybody 😉

·

I have bought a few vintage watches recently and they have been in the 34-36 mm range. I also find the smaller size more comfortable for me.

·

I saw one of these for sale recently and I am close to pulling the trigger, although I fancy a few used Seiko Credors more. If the eBay seller doesn't get back to me soon, it's GS vs IWC vs Rado vs Omega vs Credor in the battle for budget big-brand big-boy watches. Excellent size!

I have a 7.5 wrist and 34 is my favorite size. 36 second place. But I'm older so I grew up with smaller watches.

I have a 7.5" wrist too and thought that 36mm was the perfect size but 34mm was too small for decades. Now, 40mm watches look too small to me.

Who wore 42mm+ watches back in the 60s-70s (you know, vintage): Pilots (Astronaut), Racers, Divers . . .? Wait, I get it. Now that I don't need a watch to wear with my suit at work, I like Walter Mitty style tool (fantasy) watches.

·

Really can't go wrong with either size tbh.

Always a 36mm over a 40mm for me.

For me, the ideal range is 36mm to 39mm

Did they sell the early models in the US? I always though GS was a japanese only brand until fairly recently

Depends upon how you think out recently. I believe they came over in the early 2000's and I got mine in early 2010's.
