I nice watch that I CANNOT recommend.

I received some comments on my WRUW posts about this watch, and just like me, a lot of people were interested in the design. It is indeed a good looking watch, a mix between the Rolex Explorer, Omega Railmaster (thanks LilNBern), but more strikingly resembling the Omega Seamaster 300 (without the bezel of course). Despite the looks, it has 2 major flaws that push me not to recommend it:

  1. Brass case material: For the price of 90 GBP (Amazon UK, but you might find it cheaper elsewhere), that's a big no no, at least in my opinion.

  2. The Quartz movement is loud. Outdoors it's good, but indoors, no way I could stand this watch, despite me trying really hard to tolerate it. The ticks are annoying.

I have had a lot of Timex watches, and have never experienced such a thing, so this is a first for me (although I know Timex is known for their loud quartz movements).

In the end, I am disappointed with it, and it's on its way back to the seller.

BUT, if you want that look, and you are okay looking past these 2 issues, go ahead and enjoy it. I hope this helps make a better purchasing decision.

One last thing, it looks so freaking cool on the Bond nato strap:

You're right, it is a cool looking watch... It looks quite big though, or maybe that's just the angle of the pic.

I know what you mean about the noise, my own vintage Timex is pretty darn loud

Appreciate the warning

You are right, it looks big because it’s all dial. Loud movements are acceptable in vintage watches, but there is no excuse for new ones. Any chance you can share a picture of the vintage Timex?

1976 Timex Marlin. 35mm diameter... Small in size, big in noise 😉

Thanks for asking 👍

I got the classic "Railmaster" look with a Corguet, which features a Miyota automatic movement ... with a loud rotor! 😮 LOL!!

It looks great! Enjoy it mate!

I'm glad the old-school brass ticking Timex watches are still made, even if they are gargantuan sizes I won't be wearing.

·

The timex ticking is apparently a part of the charm.

My Timex x Todd Snyder is loud enough that I can hear it while wearing at times.

·

Thanks, good review of the +/- , helps!!

·

For Timex, seems OK.

·

The only Timex quartz watches that aren’t loud are the solar quartz. I think they use Seiko solar quartz movements.

·

Yeah, when I saw this watch some time ago, at first glance I thought, "Hey, that looks nice... what is that?" But the more I looked at it, the more it sunk for me. That plated brass case looks particularly crap, even in images that are designed to show the watch in, literally, the best light possible.

I just came here to point out that it's Omega Railmaster, not Tudor. Tudor has got the Ranger but this model looks nothing like it. I also don't see any resemblance to the Explorer, except for the 12/3/6/9 hour markers.

Overall, Timex is trying hard to appeal to the homage-firendly crowd with many of their designs. Unfortunately, they still don't offer the best value for the money imho.

Thank you for pointing that out. Corrected.

It’s too much like a Railmaster without the satisfaction of one . Just my opinion, If this look is what you really want, try and save for the real thing on the grey market, just an olde bugger’s 2 cents worth :)

Exactly. It's like it's reminding you "Hey, still ticking...still keeping accurate time...how's your day going?"

& regarding brass, my 2 Timex watches are brass. I knew it going in & am ok with it, particularly as both were $50.00 or less.

Loudness is not necessarily related to cheapness / or quartzyness.

My Smiths A258 has a ticking that would awaken the dead, and that’s a solid Smiths 27CS banging away under the hood. I suspect it’s just poor damping in the case due to years of abuse and potentially missing hardware within the housing, or just poor design. At least your Timex screams at you once a second, the A258 at 2.5 times a second is the horological equivalent of a washing machine tumbling down the stairs on a spin cycle.

Perspective…

Coated brass is indeed a no go. Plus it's obvious even from a photo.

·

I had a Timex Explorer. Louder than anything else I had. I sold along with most of the other quartz models I owned.

I sincerely hope you never buy a vintage watch, you are going to be very disappointed.

I once strapped a hair dryer to my wrist, it was louder than my Timex, but was poor at telling the time. I never complained after that.

·

Brass? Doesn't matter to me if it's chromed brass or base metal. I won't wear it off.

Loud? Matters. Thanks for the heads up!

·

I have known a few Timex or other affordable quartz that CLICK- CLACK instead of Tik-Tok. That’s a shame, it is pretty good looking!

·

I'm biased when it comes to Timex, there's just something about them I love. From the vintage models to Waterbury collection. I'ma huge fan of this piece..

·

Loud, you say? Must be something inherent with Timex. The one I have on today has the LOUDEST hourly chime, and I love it. I can barely hear the ones on my Casios, and I like it to keep me on track.

Image

My only other Timex doesn't have a second hand, so no loud tick. The brass case doesn't bother me in the slightest, but the watch only cost $40 USD.

The model 62 and model 63 Timex quartz were not loud. But they were very much a different mechanism.

The case and lugs remind me of my waving chairman Mao watch . I mean, even for Timex it’s pretty sad.

·

Both of these Timex are quartz, one is 50 years old, one is a year-old. You can barely hear the 50 year old one and you can’t hear the new one at all. I have no idea why that is so loud.

Image
·

My Swatch Big Bold is definitely louder. I can hear it when my arm is fully extended down. Timex have to be closer. I can tolerate brass over pot metal any day.

Dude that is stunning, especially on the contrast stitch strap. Love that dial texture
