If you could only buy and own Swiss or Japanese watches for the rest of your life?!

What would you choose?

I love Swiss watches (both my mechanical watches are Tudors) but I’d go Grand Seiko everything if I could!

·

Option D might kill me but A or B are easy and C is possibly the widest, albeit possibly shallowest, pool.

So what did you pick?

I think I went with C, but microbrands and Japanese are a tossup for me. I guess Casio and Seiko have their fairly unique look but microbrands are the least restricted category, even if you don't get more mainstream offerings in their purest form.

Ignoring the cost aspect on the Germans, that would be a true struggle for me as I really don't gel with just about any German watches.

For me, it’s Swiss for design, Japanese for technology. I picked B because you don’t really see the technology. Shallow I guess. 😅👌

Here we go with the "Grand Seikos are so amazing" comments.

Most of my collection is still Swiss. But after my first Seiko Spring Drive, I have not gone back to Swiss. Nothing beats 36,000 beats. So smooth and elegant!!!

·

Just here for the comments on this one.

Thank goodness we are not limited to the dystopian future of these choices. I collect a lot of American brands and so I have to choose the Swiss option for movements. In this world I would be pocket watch heavy with nothing after Citizen starts making movements for Caravelle in the 1970's.

·

Won’t somebody think of the sundials?

·

At this point in my journey, I’d have to have a spring drive.  I mean, assuming the world is destroyed and the internet has gone down, I’d need some accuracy for…. whatever things you do in a post apocalyptic world.

I would say that overall the swiss is more advanced in the tech-department (in the mech-realm), but there are more options, more interesting pieces from japan 🤔😅

Nomos is one of those brands I feel I should really like, but:

Side note - cant wait to see which watch company starts with their apocalypse ADs first. That would be amazing.

Am I the only one thinking that the question in the orginal post and the options given in the poll do not match? I mean: if I could only buy Swiss and Japanese watches and chose German then ... I contradicted the premise? And how are microbrands related to any of this - would we be constrained to Swiss and/or Japanese microbrands? Has our Norseman's brain melted in the summer heat?

Not at all. The title of the book doesn't tell the whole story 🤣

Ain’t matter. But why pigeonhole i guess is my attempted point 😛

Why poll or discuss anything at all?

I‘m thinking Japanese. I’ll be hoarding the Casios in addition to all my Nintendo consoles in our dystopian future. But for longevity in the smoldering Armageddon world of our future, I will daily wear my water watch…if there’s still water that is.

Why are everybody talking about armageddon in this thread? Is it dystopia juwt becaus you got a limited access to timepieces in a fictional poll 😅

·

I would wear the Explorer I for life. So, I have to choose Swiss but I like Japan more.

Yeah...but it's kind of a fun thought -- the 'what if' diatribe of the fragile but heralded human condition we all have been randomly born into.

·

Can't miss the Japanese! My entire collection is Kashio 🗾

If this somehow became a reality, I'd go Japanese. Swiss watches are great, and I'd hate to lose access to them, but I could happily exist with just my current Seiko collection and be just fine. I can't imagine not having Seiko as an option.

Citizen also got some gems here and there. I have been thinking about it lately because I have decided on having two swiss and two japanese watches in my collection. Looking for the "last" peice(swiss) and I keep ending up on japanese watches 😅

Not fun for me. I almost lost my mind 2-3 years ago thinking and prepping for whatever could go wrong 😵 Watches is my happyplace

Any of the above.  I could survive with only Japanese, Swiss, German or microbrands since they all have some nice watches to offer.  What really impresses me is Marcus's rhymes.

Danke/Arigato 🙏

Swiss. Too many pilot and military watch designs with the "Swiss Made" label. If I ever get over my boyish obsession with military-themed watches, I'd probably choose Japanese-made.

·

I have five watches in my collection. 3 Seiko and 2 Citizen. So, Japan it is!
