Do sport watches need date window especially diver watches?

I know that this is a controversial topic and there are many opinions and preferences out there. Some people say that the date window is a useful and practical complication that adds functionality and convenience to the watch. Others say that the date window is an unnecessary and distracting feature that ruins the aesthetics and symmetry of the dial.

The date window can have some design problems, such as the size, position, color, and shape of the window, which can affect the readability and harmony of the dial. The date window can also interfere with other elements on the dial, such as subdials, logos, or indicators. The date window can also make the watch more difficult to service or repair, as it is sealed and glued together.

I have done some research online and I found some interesting articles that compare the Rolex Submariner Date vs. Submariner No-Date, which are two of the most iconic and popular diver watches in the world. They highlight the differences between these two models, such as the price, availability, options, and history. They also give some arguments for and against each model, depending on personal preference and taste.

Personally, I prefer the Submariner No-Date over the Submariner Date, because I like the simplicity and purity of the time-only dial. I think that the date window on the Submariner Date breaks the balance and elegance of the dial, and I don't really need to know the date when diving or doing sports. I also like the fact that the Submariner No-Date is closer to the original Submariner that was introduced in 1953, which had no date function.

However, I understand that some people may prefer the Submariner Date over the Submariner No-Date, because they find the date window useful and convenient in their daily life. They may also like the variety and luxury of the Submariner Date, which comes in different metals and colors. They may also appreciate the history and significance of the Submariner Date, which was the first Submariner to feature a date window in 1966.

So, what do you think? Does sport watches need date window especially diver watches?

It’s a dive watch…why does anyone need to know the date UNDERWATER?? 🤣🤣

·

I am a emotional collector so no date is my preference.

But most of people are desk divers 🤣🤣🤣

Hope you’re not working in a submarine lair…🤣

The Sub is as any analog wrist watch a luxury piece and no tool. If you want a watch with date, where is the issue?!

The Sub is no watch for divers anymore, it is a watch in a old dive style. If you want to go diving take a Apple Watch Ultra.

·

The No date sub is much nicer looking, however I would still prefer a date since its so useful to have it on your wrist for me.

Hi,

Thanks for the post, I find myself with a foot in both camps. I don’t think date windows are aesthetically pleasing, and think that is particularly the case in dive watches using that classic symmetry, which is thrown off by the window.

On the other hand, I find the date function on a watch the most useful complication, and I find myself trying to check the date on no my no date watches. For that reason, I am willing to compromise form for function.

With the Sub specifically and Rolex date models in general, the cyclops magnifier in the crystal is more off putting to me than the date window itself so of if I were in the market for a sub specifically, I would probably prefer the No Date as the cyclops would put me off. If anyone was to gift me one though, I wouldn’t refuse!

·

The date window is fine by me as long as it is aesthetically correct in relevenace with the general design of the watch. I am not a fan of a cyclops though...

·

I say no date. Especially with the butt-ugly cyclops. ‍😕

·

Since they managed to screw up the date design so badly that they added a wart to fix that problem, there's only no date as an option on this watch. If I wanted a date on a watch I'd pick any other brand without the wart.

yeah i believe no one will refuse a submariner as a gift, both nodate and date version =))

And if anyone wants to test me on that, they are welcome to gift me a Rolex date sub, and in the interest of science, they can also consider gifting me a no date version as a control.🤣

·

Hate dates on anything, utterly useless to anyone who has a functional memory 🤯

·

The date window ruins the symmetry of the dial. Especially in the case of Rolex, the cyclops is double pain and absolutely DESTROYS the symmetry. 👎

·

All my watches need date windows otherwise it’s an automatic no-buy 🤷🏻‍♂️

·

Contra Date! Love the symmetry and design of no-date dials.

·

Some people find it more symmetrical and I find a date the most practical complication on a watch. I always prefer date

·

I don’t see it as either or, more like what is it for. A date variant gives the wearer a useful complication.

·

I don’t know, you have to record the date of your dive so.... 😂

·

Ive grown so used to dates on watches, my whole "main" collection all has a date, if not also a day. When i wear my few side pieces that dont have a date, I find myself checking my wrist then frustratingly pulling my phone out to check 🤣

·

I haven’t ever set any of my watches to a date. It’s just there at any random number. I really have no use for a date complication.

Unfortunately I have a couple of Seiko divers, all with day/date window 😑

I have a Kamasu, that I have re-categorized as a sport watch in my head. Still love 'em, but gotta live by my rules! 😉

·

On a Rolex no date, that cyclops is so ugly. On any other brands, I'd probably have a date.

A man of principle 😂

·

Ideally, I want a no date but I won't complain about a date window if it is executed well (colour matching with the dial or have a frame around it)

·

I couldn’t decide, so I recently got both iterations. Love and enjoy them both equally 🤙❤️

·

I like to have a date personally. However, I’d rather have no date than a date with magnifying glass. Ruins it for me.

·

I like having the date. However, my preference when it comes to the dive watch from Rolex. I prefer the Submariner vs the Submariner Date. It's just the symmetrical look of the Submariner. It gives off that timeless vibe of not having a care in the world.

·

I'm not a fan of a date complication. It's pretty rare that I ask myself what date is it ? Specially in a tech heavy environment that we live today. For dive watches, I wonder if somebody ever wondered itself what date it is while 200m underwater.

Lmao

·

Both are great watches just depends on personal taste and maybe cost difference I like both but I won’t spend that kind of money on a time piece

Uh, we have dive computers these days. With that said dive watches are mostly redundant. I did know a few for-real deep sea divers and yes they had Submariners. They also had lizard-skin cowboy boots and drove Corvettes and/or big 4WD trucks. I knew a few other divers and they wore Seikos or Citizens.

In the name of all that is wholesome and holy do not wear anything that says Navy Seals or Special Forces or something like that. They don't wear them and will, at the very least, taunt you for wearing them. Almost to a man any Seal/SF will wear a G-shock and sometimes on their vest and not their wrist.

For most of us, the only diving we will do is in some sort of Microsoft product. I usually get deep into spreadsheets and SharePoint. Most of the data I review covers multiple dates. That's why I like to look at the watch on my wrist and know the day/date.

Oh, no date on a dress ever.
