"Unobtainable" Watches

There are plenty of "unobtainable" watches. Watches that we've been told are impossible to get. But are they? Whether you're after a Moon Swatch, a Daytona or a Nautilus - what has your experience been? Has the idea of a wait just made you not try? Has it driven you to go grey-market? Or are you still waiting it out - with perhaps hope someday? And what is on your "unobtainable" list?

What happens if your on the wait list and have bought from the grey market as I've done both

This is how I got my unobtainable watch...  😂

r/WatchesCirclejerk - I have no idea what to think about this

My favorite is when I see a NWA! post and the happy new owner thanks the AD by name and I think, huh that's my AD, I wonder how long THAT GUY had to wait. 🤔

·

There’s still a few obtainable watches I’m after before I venture deep into the darkness..

While there are a lot of watches I want, I know my limits.

I want a Death Star &/or a Boba Fett Tourbillon, a Speedy in Moonshine gold, a moonphase Speedy. These are fever dreams, however.

The unobtanium status comes not just from their rarity (the tourbillons), but also from the actual cost. The ratio of the cost of the Speedy's to my annual income is in the 1:single digits range.

Therefore, these watches will never grace my wrist, not even in a "hey, try it on, it'll be fun" way. I am truly unable to obtain them.

The one watch I will allow myself to dream about is a basic Speedy. I can get one on the secondary market for $2K-$4K. I want the whole AD brand new experience though, so It will cost $6-$7K before I will have the opportunity. I also need at least 75% saved before I will get excited about the possibility of owning one.

Patience.

I'm fine with a waiting list, if and only if the watch I want is available to try. No point ordering and waiting for a watch only to feel underwhelmed when it doesn't deliver as expected.

unobtainable 1: I went into a Rolex dealer and inquired about an Explorer.  Was shown the door, did not even have the option to be on a waiting list when I asked about it.  So that brand is dead to me, no desire to overpay for one of those.

unobtainable 2: Went to line up for a Moonswatch at 6am in the pouring rain on 1st launch day.  Already crazy and unorganized.  Was budged in front of, trampled and abused until I gave up at around 7am.  Store opened at 10am!  Absolute chaos.  As it turned out only tens out of the 1000s of people got watches, so that was smart line up to bail out on.  After learning more about it, I don't want any of them.  The company treated us all as schmucks and I've no space for a plastic & soon to break watch in my collection.

So while I ticked the box for 'still waiting, no luck', it's not quite correct as I don't want any of those unobainables I initially tried for! 😀

I guess I'm the odd man out.  Being told I can't get something doesn't seem to make me want it more, especially if I feel I'm not wanted as a customer. 🤷‍♂️

how about you Kayla?  any success landing a prize that most would call impossible to get?

I managed to get my moonswatch at retail, but I had to go in there three times before they had one in stock.

I am currently on the waitlist for a Ranger from Tudor but that won't take too long, so I don't know id I count. I've been waiting for a couple weeks, we'll see how long it takes but I'm optimistic.

·

It has become apparent over the past couple of years that I no longer qualify for Rolex purchases at my local AD.  Fortunately, it has allowed me to explore other brands such as Blancpain, Bulgari, Glashutte Original, etc.

I don’t do wait lists.  I do “NEXT….”

·

Do you mean ‘unobtainable’ at an AD or MSRP? Because all those watches you listed are definitely easily obtainable if you have the money and/or inclination. All in ‘unworn’ condition too.

·

There are thousands of watches out there.  I don't want any specific ones badly enough to put up with shenanigans.

Per some of my previous posts I was getting antsy with my wait. I had gently "warned" my AD that if I didn't have what I needed by December I was going to be disappointed. Magically I picked up my GMT Master II on the 8th of this month. I had decided that if I had to, I would go grey. With the new Rolex CPO program, I think things will get REALLY interesting for those on waitlists.

I want a Daytona, as it was a watch that I wanted when I was in my early 20s, but I don't want to put up with the wait, so I'll probably go grey to get it in the next few years and pay the premium.

You and I are quite similar. The GMT Master II was the one that I dreamed about as my 1st Rollie, but It wasn't the first (I had a sub and sold it). My dream is a A. Lange & Sohne Datograph Perpetual which is WAAAAYYYY out of my price range too. I'd be happy if I could see it in person but it's unlikely.

Speedy's are dope and I want the snoopy because I was a snoopy fanatic as a kid. In general though I have most of the watches I "want" on a list in order of purchase so for now I'm sticking with that.

Here’s another reason we need more than 4 choices when creating a poll.  I’d have to select E. Gave up on the product and bought a homage instead, happy with the choice.

·

I bought a Rolex SubC date 5 years ago before the run up in prices: new with stickers on, from a well known grey dealer, $1000 below MSRP.

Im very happy with my Submariner, thankful I didn’t have to play games at an AD.

Got a moonswatch by pure happenstance. Was in Union Square in SF after flying home from Canada, happened to stop for lunch in the city rather than drive through somewhere and they had three for me to choose from.

Got a Jupiter. Its fine? I was not going to seek one out, just happened to be having lunch nearby and figured I would check. I think they also had an Earth too. Neat stuff.
