California ❤️

Not my watch but I do love the look of it. I never really researched the history of the California dial and usually I'm like 🤔. Don't know if I love it or hate it but on this piece I think it looks really nice. Do you guys like California dials?

Love 'em but not got one in the collection at the moment.

A little bit of this, a little bit of that. Looks good tbh

·

I like how when you show a non-watch person a california dial, they don’t “see” it until you mention it. I like them.

My grail is a PAM424 for when I retire. No seconds hand, no need in retirement. A big chunk of watch to wear with my Hawaiian shirts 🌴

·

I think California dials are fun but have not found one on a Panerai that is in my financial comfort zone.

History from Wikipedia

A California dial refers to a clock face that consists of half Roman (usually 10 o'clock to 2 o'clock) and half Arabic numerals (usually 4 o'clock to 8 o'clock). A dash is often used for hours 3, 6, and 9, and an inverted triangle for hour 12. The use of this style dates back to the 1930s, and was featured in early Rolex and Panerai watches.[1] Originally called the “high visibility” or “error proof” dial, it was created during World War II to aid legibility in low-light combat conditions.[2] After the war, the style faded away until it was popularized in the 1980s economic boom in Japan.[3][4] Rolex could not keep up with demand, leading to a California-based company refurbishing Rolexes in the style, hence the name "California" dial.[5]

I can feel a disturbance in the force, like a million teachers all screamed out at once "Wikipedia isn't a valid reference!!!"

Nope, kinda goes against everything enthusiasts talk about being on a great watch; cohesion & design language. Having two completely different types of numerals just screams "No" to me.

·

I love the idea of them, but haven’t found one that I “need” to own (and can afford) yet.

·

I like this Sinn with this dial.

I kinda dislike it

Is that it's called when they mix Roman with Numbers. Hmmm. Didn't know that. Im not a fan but like most things it will most likely grow on me and before too long I will fall in love and definitely want one. 😁.

I have been planning on buying one of these for a while but Timex is usually out of stock

Yes LOVE them dials!

I do like it, but specifically on a Panerai I don’t know if it floats my boat. I feel I would still want a sandwich dial. I especially want a Radiomir right now. If I had other Panerais right now maybe my opinion would change, but presently it seems like a lot of money for not quite what I want from a Panerai. Overall, I think the design does work beautifully, but I doubt I would ever buy one.

How about a sandwich California dial? 🤔

Beautiful! Not sure if it’s a Panerai (from the latest releases) or an homage

I mean I would take a look! Then I would know for sure if I like California dials or if they’re just not for me 😉

Correct me if I’m mistaken, but that’s a reverse California Dial. Very cool

I'm not really sure myself as I've seen others that are inverted

·

I loathe California dials, but wear what you like! 👍🏻

·

Love em! Also very into "anonymous" panerai dials.

I was thinking of the Nomos Club Campus with Roman numerals on the bottom half and Arabic on the top
