Will The Omega Seamaster Look Dated In 10 Years?

Image

I'm saving for the Omega Seamaster 300 but after seeing a photo of a random Franck Muller, I'm worried. Franck Mullers were popular in the 90s/00s, to say the least. I'm sure the people who purchased them called them eccentric or iconic. That's how I describe the Seamaster hands, dial and helium escape valve. I'm well aware the thicc no taper bracelet will be out of place in 2026 but I'm thinking about the rest now.

In defence of the Seamaster, the design has been with us since the 90s, been on 007's wrist and growing into a genuinely iconic design. However, the current Seamaster 300 design is a contemporary makeover with big lume markers, 50 mm lug to lug spacing and a overall brash feel which the Seamaster never had. I'll ignore the fact the Franck Muller has big hour markers, a long lug to lug for the time and brash overall design as it might hurt my own feelings.... What I'm trying to say is that I starting to think the current Seamaster 300 maybe destined for the dated label, sooner rather than later.

The previous Seamaster 300 ceramic model and the models before, in my opinion, aren't dated mainly because they were understated. Man, I don't know how the Submariner gets aware with it. The Sub went from understated to flashy and in your face but there's no chance the Sub is going to be dated.

This leads me back to my savings. Do I save for the current Seamaster 300 or change my mind for possible old ceramic Seamaster model. There's the even safer option of a Tudor Black Bay 54 or Pelagos 39. Those uber understated and slightly boring Tudors can't become dated, surely?

An Omega will never look dated. Period.

It's amazing how I just sort of knew that by looking at it.

I don't know mate, have you seen those pre-ceramic Seamaster chronographs lately? Grim in my opinion.

·

Of course it will. Look at the bright side if it: You'll have a vintage watch with a complete service history.

·

The early bond seamaster are looking very dated now, so I would say definitely, yes

·

Get whatever makes you happy now. Who knows how things are going to turn out for us tomorrow?

·

Yes, as like everything else.

·

It’s looked the same since the 90s pretty much. Hopefully in ten years they will wise up and change the bracelet

·

The dial wont but that bracelet - Omega can do so much better than this in terms of bracelet - Seamaster is an absolutely iconic wonderful watch and it pains me to see the bracelets that Omega uses on Seamasters - The watch though, is a classic and will always be relevant and beautiful

Your last sentence is the qualifier. Your opinion.

·

That was a bit of a concern for me so I went Seamaster 300 Heritage.

You're grim pal, no qualifier

Saw it in person once and it was mighty tempting... it's mighty tempting again all of a sudden

·

Yes. It already looks dated. The older sword hands version, however, still looks good.

Better yet, go for the heritage.

·

Nope!! It's been around since 1993 and is still the Bond watch since 1995

·

James Bond will never go out of style, seamaster will be an icon 40+ years from now.

·

I love the white dial 300, but am really eyeing the Christopher Ward that is basically the same asthetics for 1/5 the price

·

My take: I both love and hate the SMP's design. There are many elements I don't like, but as a whole it strangely works. It's not brash, it's just ornate. Too ornate for a tool, but it's a luxury watch anyway. When it ages, it will be dated, and then will be appreciated vintage.

The ceramic Subs, on the other hand, are tasteless bricks, no matter the timeless dial design.

Tudor is indeed the safe bet, because it's already retro.

·

Buy a vintage seamaster (2254.50 or 2531.80)!

·

Of course it looks dated, how could it not with a steam whistle sticking out and telling everybody what kind of engine is powering it.

·

No, it's a classic.

Prefer one that's already dated myself 😜

I know this is controversial, but I can't help but feel it looks dated now..

The fancy wave dial, the unusual bezel grips, the bracelet.. nothing about it is really new in the past decade. It just got shinier.

I sometimes think this too. It's undeniably 90's! (For better or worse)

I have SeaMasters from the 1990's and 2000's that still look great.

My 1998 (25 years old) 2534.50.00 GMT Looks new and still holds up to today's competition in my opinion.

Nice watch great condition

I have considered this question myself. Mainly because my plan is to keep most of the watches I buy for the long-term.

I’ve looked at newer Omega Seamaster 300m models a few times and one thing that stopped me was the frequency of new models. It’s difficult to keep older models from not looking dated when you do that. IMO most Omega Seamasters won’t age well.

Ones that have: Submariner, Speedmaster, Datejust, Tank, Portugueser, Reverso, most IWC Pilots, most Panerai’s. All timeless classics for a reason.

·

The only thing imo that might be dated on this beautiful watch is the bracelet.

·

Good design (while it will always be influence by its era of inception) will always be good design. Think of beautiful cars from the 90s, or Mark Newson, Dyson etc.

·

I still enjoy my dated Seamasters 😅But I think they are iconic and timeless.
