ALWAYS talk to strangers about their watches!

I was at Costco a few weeks ago and noticed the cashier was wearing a Gen 1 Monster. I complimented it. He was shocked I knew what it was. I was there last night and wore my Gen 2, and his whole mood changed when he saw me. He started talking about how he wears it diving on vacation, and the last place he want diving was extra salty and faded the black lettering on the bezel and how he wants to get it reapplied. Look at that juxtaposition, a desk diver and a real diver!

Do you compliment random people’s watches in public? I almost always do.

No of course not that would be weird. 😂

I love talking to people about their watches, but I will say it BREAKS MY HEART when someone has a great watch and knows nothing about it. I talked to a guy with an OP once that he thought was a Submariner, I said, "No, if it was a Sub it would have a dive bezel" and he said, "Oh, well I have one of those too, I think." oof!

I love interactions like this, because it's not commonplace. I only find people that get nerdy about watches at ADs. And they're the employees lol.

Yeah whenever I’m in an AD I can go on for hours with the employees.

·

Never.

And I'm glad I wasn't waiting behind you as you exchanged horological pleasantries with the guy who was supposed to be working.

·

I compliment strangers on their watches all the time.

·

Nerds!!

😜

·

The only interesting watches I've seen on anyone in the last few years, less one waiter with a garish iridescent Invicta (yes, I did ask about that), were on adolescent girls. I suspect their mothers may have taken it wrong had I said anything.

·

I have only approached two people. One was a young guy with a Casio Duro on a colorful nato strap and the other was a guy with a Tag Chronograph at a small party. In both cases I was pretty confident the person was going to appreciate someone noticing. Otherwise it is so rare to come across someone and if you do you have to determine if they will ne freaked out if you approach them about their watch or if they will be happy to find someone else as nerdy as them!

·

I do sometimes. Recently at the airport he was wearing the same Christopher Ward as I own so I had to say something. We were then briefly talking about my Hanhart. Nice little chat.

·

One of the best things about life is celebrating shared passions. We should always compliments strangers watch as a reason to meet a new person or strike a conversation.

·

At work I often compliment customers’ watches, but I hold back when it comes to Rolexes. With those, I don’t want to give off the wrong impression or make them feel like I’m drawing unwanted attention to something like that. When I’m around people I know, I do tho

And whichever is the Monsteriest here is best version hands-down. The other looks like it’s had dental work.

·

Almost never. People would look at me strange if I said I like their Submariner, almost as if T hey didn’t know what I was referring to.

·

My last line of work was in an industrial setting and between my coworkers and our vendors, I used to see a lot of G Shocks and Casio sport watches. Had a couple of coworkers who were enthusiasts that I could talk watches with.

But in the wild, I rarely see anything interesting. It's Apple watches as far as the eye can see. 😔

I do the same. Patients seem to be more talkative 😉

The ironic part of it, is that I am beholden to time and talking about watches will certainly get me behind schedule. I have to be careful.

·

I do actually. Good way to make friends. Just gotta have some thick skin in case people look at you weird 😂

·

I do.

·

Gen 1 and gen 3 right??

·

So cool. I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve connected with strangers on watches outside of industry events. Even though it’s rare I remember every single one. Love it.

·

Normally only if its someone I know or if it's clearly an enthusiasts watch, aka not a rolex lmao.

·

Did you invite him to join Watchcrunch 😅

·

Some time back my pharmacist had some sort of big chunky diver on. I couldn't tell what it was because he wasn't immediately in front of me, but I could see he had it on a classic Bond nato. I commented on his choice of a 'classic Bond nato' and he just about fell off his little elevated workspace in shock that someone else in the world knew what that was.

·

Gen 1 brothers! 🍻❤️

Mine looks like it was run over by a bus 😂

Got it 20+ years ago as my first collector watch

Yes, if they're not "smart" watches

·

Talking to strangers?! How... American. 🙃

·

Yea. One single little compliment can make a great day for anyone. World would be a better place if we have more people like you.

·

What a cool moment to share!

·

I asked a guy about his Damasko once and he replied very gruffly, "it's just a watch." Was having sushi once in a really small, counter only place and guy next to me had a Breguet. He was chatty but I didn't want to call attention to his $18,000 watch! 🫣

This happened the other day, a guy came into that shop with a Santos medium , and I said "oh I love your Santos " he replied with a blank expression and then told me his watch was a cartier ...XD. oh the muggles , bless them.
