“You should post this on WatchCrunch! Everyone will laugh!” - My partner.

No memes in #general? I’ll see myself out.

Context: My partner, before meeting me, knew precisely zero about watches. Ever since I started working for a luxury watch company, I’ve essentially been bombarding her with every single minute detail of information I could possibly find.

Initially, she feigned interest in the heritage and storytelling of all sorts of brands, but one thing caught her eye: The Engineering. She aspires to be an engineer herself, so when I started to talk about the Spring Drive from Grand Seiko, she was immediately fascinated.

Now when we talk about watches (which is 90% of our conversations now - I have a major problem), she is always asking about the movement and the mechanics behind some of the watches.

Okay, maybe she isn’t - but she’s always interested in how they work and the quality of the engineering behind the watch.

This is why I was explaining the difference between the kinds of automatic rotors in a watch. She has a hard time visualising what I (often very poorly) explain, so I made this fun graphic for her.

That, and I was nerding about the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Tourbillon that I saw for sale online.

She suggested that I should make a meme out of it.

She suggested the “Brain Exploding” meme was funnier, but I like the “Distinguished Winnie the Pooh.” More classy.

Point is, I love that she got so enthusiastic with me in my interests. She even fell in love with Casio and Seiko, and aspires to get a Baby G at some point. She also wants me to get an Orange Seiko 5 GMT!

I think it looks pretty good, and she says I look great in orange. Should I pull the trigger on this, or a Seiko Prospex Speedtimer?

I guess the moral of the story is, it’s always a lot more fun when someone you love and appreciate is engaged with your interests on any level. Now I just need to learn more about dresses…

If you have shared your watch hobby with someone in your life, be it your partner, family or friends, did they ever get as enthusiastic as you? When did you realise you had turned them onto watches?

It’s probably amazing my wife and I are married at all, she’s not into any of my stuff. She’s supportive, but doesn’t really care about what I’m into. Maybe not as good as willing interest, but I’ll take it.

In my house I am tolerated as an eccentric. (Actually, that's pretty true in my professional life as well.)

·

Congrats & commiserations 😂

My better half is into watches too, makes great conversations but has cost me a blummin' fortune!! ( SPB147, Cartier Ballon Bleu & even nicked my Khaki King 😂)

Good luck 👍

yes yes yes

Buy whatever you are encoured to. You never know how long it will last. That is fantastic if you can share the interest in watches.

·

My wife pokes fun at me and my watch enthusiasm and is very patient when I pause the TV to see what the guy's wearing on the show. For example, a show called "The First 48," which documents actual homicide detectives working a case, trying to get leads within the first 48 hours of the murder.

(As an aside, I never noticed before but some shows actually blur out watch faces. Why, I don't know, since they don't blur out other branded objects that appear on the show.)

In return, I poke fun at my wife for her enthusiasm for office supplies & pens.

Start learning your dresses, @defsNOTgenta: A-line, pencil, etc.

Ok my wife have very little interest in my hobbies but she lets me play and on occasion I’ll entertain her hobbies and interests too.. so saying that it costs me a brand new fridge and a dishwasher and a thing called “cricket” (its arts and crafts stuff)… I said yes to the fridge cuz it makes “craft Ice” oh yeah!! Whisky time!! And dishwasher so I don’t have to clean the dishes…

Im happy with condescending indifference. That way she leaves my stuff alone and my watches never disappear.

All I get from my husband when I talk watches...

My wife, in response to my bringing up the subject of watches:

May I suggest a castle with a tower to keep her in? 😛😂

I've been pretty well immersed in this hobby for close to a decade so I feel pretty ashamed right now but here goes... Peripheral rotor?? How have I missed this being a thing??

·

My wifey is kind and so will usually feign interest so as to be a good and loving partner.

But I could ask her opinion on an 55mm INVICTA Sharknado vs a Moser Vantablack Tourbillon and she'd tell me "they are both lovely! which do you like? ... I'm going over to look in that shoe store now."

Yeah! Carl F. Bucherer is very well known for their peripheral automatics - I recommend looking at their Manero Collection!

I am blessed with an enthusiastic wife as well. It has only cost my Explorer, Zenith, Cartier and a new Glashutte Original SeaQ, among others.

Or as my Grandma used to say, be careful what you wish for. You just might get it.

Funny, I was thinking of putting together a meme with that orange dial that reminds me of Darwin Watterson. 😁

Wait....does your wife have a long lost twin sister?
