Hello watch crunchers !

Hi everyone !

I'm a watch enthusiast from Belgium and the US.  Looking to talk about watches with fellow watch lovers. 😊 I've taken a classe at the Horological Society of NYC, for those living in the area, I highly recommend it, very interesting. I'm also looking into going full time into watchmaking. First question for the community, I need some help to buy a new watch. Got a budget of 4-5k and want a in-house movement with a GMT, Chrono complication or a dive watch. What do you guys recommend ?

Welcome to the community fellow Belgian!

Welcome to WC!

·

Tudor black bay GMT also doubles as a diver 200m

·

Welcome! I lived in Belgium for several years and loved it there.

I recently got a Black Bay Pro, which I am unbelievably happy with, and may fit your brief.

·

 Welcome home my brother

·

Ah Belgium.  Lived there as a toddler, but have no memory of it.  Did visit a couple of times about 7-8 years ago to see some of the sights (Brugge, Bastonge) though.  Fell in love with Belgian beer!

At your price range, Tudor - as already mentioned - would be a great place to start.

Let us know what you get, and pics when you do!

Welcome to the family!

Welcome to WC.  I agree with the suggestions for Tudor, but would also add the Longines Zulu Time for consideration in terms of a GMT watch. I don't own one, but know a few people who do, and they absolutely love it. Seems like a great option, and even at full MSRP is well under your budget.

·

Welcome to WC! The GS quartz GMT is $3-4K and is worth consideration if quartz is on your list at all.

Hi and welcome, I would recommend  an Oris or Sinn ( though they won't be in house movement).

Or Grand Seiko but I guess quartz is not on your menu?

Hello Daniel and welcome to the WC family. So great to welcome an other fellow Belgian to this great place. That makes me think that we could organize a local WC meetup should we have enough interest for it. I will look into it :)

Great to see your deep enthusiasm for the world of watchmaking. My wide actually just gifted me with an intro horology class that will take place in Brussels in February (don’t have all the info yet). While I clearly don’t want to make a full time gig out of this, I would love to get to know more how everything works more intimately.

As for your question, I find that price point a bit tricky as it is more than entry level but less than entre level luxury. In any case, beyond the very good recommendations I would suggest:

  1. Check the GS offering, especially if you can buy them from japan and delivered to the US. I was able to get a wonderfull brand new Cherry Blossom for around USD 5k vs USD 7k if bought directly in the US or EUR. Alternatively, the GS SBGM221 is a wonderful GMT that would fit your budget.
  2. If you don’t need to buy brand new, you should be able to get a great Moonwatch for that price.

Thanks for the warm welcome! Really love the BB pro but as I told @Oldmanwatches I already have a BB58 and a Rolex 216570, looking to spice things up in my collection with another brand, any recommendations? :)

Nice ! Belgian beer is indeed on the best ones, there’s a bar in Brussels with over 2,000 different brands.

already have a BB58 want to diversify hehe I was looking at Oris, Rado and Panerai, what’s your take on those brands ?

Hello and Welcome 🤗

·

Welcome to WC. Can't really help with advice. If someone gave me 5k, I'd scratch the GMT itch with a Christopher Ward, and then use the rest of the money on another watch 🤷🏾‍♂️

·

Welcome my friend

I really like my Longines Spirit Zulu Time. The movement is proprietary to Longines, but developed by ETA. It’s as in house as Kenissi is to Tudor.

True GMT, COSC, 72 hour power reserve.

Really like that....

Hey Gauthier ! Thanks for the warm welcome and happy to see so many fellow Belgians here. Would be very cool indeed love to organize a WC meetup, talking watches while drinking beer what else. :)

Could you give me more information on the class you’re attending in February, I’d be interested in attending.

I’ll check out GS, I must admit it’s a brand I don’t know that well.

Moonwatch second hand could be a very good option

Thanks for the info and could be cool to meet in Brussels

here are the details for the workshop, in french (beginner level): https://www.objectifhorlogerie.fr/produit/atelier-first-time-bruxelles/ let me know if you end up going :)

will follow up once I am back in belgium for organizing a meet up!

I really like the blue dial, definitely on my shortlist thanks ! And you're right about Kenissi :)

Yes Oris have their own in house movement. I meant in relation to Sinn who only use 3rd party movement's. Which are great and possibly easier / more cost effective to maintain.

I guess if your going to be involved heavily in the industry that may not really be a concern for your decision on choice.

I might add Lemania as a possibility and  Zenith make a great chronograph with an in house movement.

Good luck with your purchase.

Will look into Zenith as well thanks :)

Welcome to WC! 🍻Oris does have in-house movements, but not with GMT or chrono functions. Check out their Aquis's with the caliber 400 if you want a diver that's in-house.👍It's within your budget and even under.

Yes the Aquis is really nice ! also on my shortlist

Awesome, thanks ! I signed up for the 3pm watchmaking class, do you know if you're doing the morning or afternoon class?

I'm going back to Belgium on Monday but it would be nice to organize a meet up with the other Belgian WC's. :)

Welcome Daniel, and I'd second some of the comments here regarding Grand Seiko, the Elegance GMTs are lovely.

Welcome!

Hey ddg, welcome to the group. 👍
