Should I?

Help me with a dilemma, lovely people of WatchCrunch. I tried on a Speedy โ€˜57 in a local place recently and was instantly smitten. I tried it next to a Moonwatch and also compared to a Zenith El Primero Chrobomaster Sport (which I loved but not as much). Anyway, the โ€˜57 went straight on my list as my next buy.

I had not planned on buying it quickly. Not least because of the price. I was going to be disciplined and gradually put money aside for it. Iโ€™m pretty new to this hobby. I went shopping for a Seiko last autumn and came home with a Tudor Ranger, bought a vintage Omega the next week and a Bremont Supermarine Jet for Christmas. It got expensive pretty quick.

All that being said, in my first-world problems life, I am presented with an opportunity. I passed through Dubai airport yesterday and they were offering the โ€˜57 at below pre-owned price (and that was before haggling). Iโ€™m passing back through again in a couple of weeks and will have the opportunity again.

To buy it would be to borrow from future-me. I can afford it, it would just be ill disciplined. But if I do wait, Iโ€™ll likely pay more to buy at home. Considerably more.

So help me with this champagne dilemma. Should I wait to buy this luxury watch?

If it's something that I know that I'd buy eventually, I'd get it now if offered at a substantial discount. No harm in trying to bring the price even lower by haggling.

ยท

If you are sure you will buy this watch in the future I don't understand why you would want future you to pay significantly more. Be happy and grateful for the luck that came your way to be able to get it soon for such a great deal. ๐Ÿ‘ I say go for it!

ยท

Snooze you lose. Buy it asap. ๐Ÿ˜‰

ยท

By way of a self-bargaining technique on this, Iโ€™m not in love with the Bremont and might sell it to partially fund this. I bought the Bremont for a really good price too so thatโ€™s basically profit, right ๐Ÿ˜‚

ยท

Beautiful watch

ยท

I'd have bought it then and there, cos you know you're gonna buy it anyway at some point. Give them a call!

ยท

Grab it quick when the opportunity presents itself. Cheaper in the long run.

ยท

Worst case scenario you can haggle upto 20% off in your local Omega AD.

I have power of attorney for my father who recently went into a home with dementia. And weโ€™re now burning through his life savings weekly at a massive rate until we reach a low asset threshold and the council support kicks in.

This has given me a new perspective on the merits of overly prudent saving, completely counter to my background and upbringing.

If the watch is affordable and will give you pleasure (and in this case there would be recoverable value if you needed to sell it) then crack on and enjoy life! Squirrelling mega bucks away for tomorrow is not all itโ€™s cracked out to be (small bucks fine).

My in-laws have just gone through a similar process and now my own parents are doing the same. Theyโ€™re currently seeing away some of their savings with a three month tour of south east Asia whilst my mumโ€™s still able to enjoy it.

My heart is with you, man.

It has been an adult personal rule to never offer advice to anybody when it is about money, you must have reasons for hesitation about a watch that you would enjoy owning so I trust your original decision to pass. However I see most of the comments favour buying the watch asap if the savings are deep enough. It should not impact your attraction for the 57 but my regular ad sells Omegas and the Zenith line as well, the 57 in certain dial colours is a very slow seller compared to various Speedys and much less in demand than the Chronomaster Sports at his boutique.

This is what makes the decision time sensitive. 20% off at the AD would still be ยฃ1k+ more than Iโ€™d be buying for in Dubai Airport

ยท

If you have the money, meaning that it has no effect on your household and future savings, and you know you going to buy it soon and maybe pay more, it can be the right choice, having that you have already saved enough from your extra funds to effort such a pleasure

ยท

Itโ€™s really up to you.

I would definitely go for the Speedy.

Sounds like you have great taste in watches so Iโ€™m sure you make a good decision.

Apart from the Bremont. Yabba-dabba-donโ€™t ๐Ÿคฃ

ยท

Is the price difference more than what that money could accrue in a high-yield savings account between now and the time you originally planned to buy it? Can you absorb the cost now without messing up your cash flow for more immediate needs and responsibilities? Is there any chance you'll change your mind when the ardor has cooled? These are some good questions to ask.

ยท

This model was also my favorite with the arrow handset and slightly smaller case to the Moonwatch. The '57 is dressier than the Moonwatch and you either love or hate the faux-patina. I prefer the sub dial layout and 12 hour counter legibility on the Moonwatch so chose the 3861 Moonwatch when my AD offed me -20% with no regrets. Except in hindsight I would have gone for the Plexiglas on fabric. Seeing the movement is nice but I prefer the Plexiglas vintage look/vibe. I ended up adding the fabric strap so would have saved about $1600 and been just as happy! Good luck on your Speedy journey.

Iโ€™m with @Seveadon why be hard on yourself in the future. Just buy it and go home as the proudest and happiest Watchguy on that plane ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ

the pragmatic response is yes wait; prices are coming back down to reality.

The watch nerd in me says sell the Bremont buy the Omega. Point of fact the Omega will be with far longer than the Bremont (clearly, I am not a Bremont guy) embrace the watch torcher.

good luck have fun enjoy the journey.

Have you seen this? It just looks a little bare on the bottom. I think this kind of rounds out the face with the moon phase. I put a post up of Joe Rogan gifting, the watch he was wondering (this particular watch by the way) because he was wearing this ugly diesel frisbee. Let me see if I can find the link and save the trouble.

I almost pulled the trigger on the blue dial!!!

ยท

So did you try one on and make sure it's a good fit on your wrist, even tho it's only a 40.5mm case diameter it has long straight lugs (49mm) so it may wear larger than you expect. The Speedmaster 57 is a great watch and arguably cooler than the Speedmaster Pro IMHO

The watch is pimp. If you can buy new under retail, you love it and no one will go hungry or without heat and light if you buy it then go get it

ยท

Had a similar thing happen to me at Stanbul airport with an octofinissimo... I passed up on it and regret it till today. It has since caught a hype train and is now considerably more expensive. If you are getting a good price, you know it is a really good price and it wont break you, but it. I love that omega as well.

ยท

I would wait. Borrowing from โ€œfuture youโ€ is a likely path to regret. When โ€œpresent youโ€ can afford the watch (assuming you still like it then), that little bit more discount wonโ€™t matter.

ยท

Alright, let's calm down here.

I understanstand that you want to scratch an itch, and that you have an opportunity here, but buying an expensive watch in a rush, especially when your finances are not good is never a good idea.

Don't buy a watch if you cannot financially replace it right away. You just start the hobby, so more opportunities will show up.

But at the end, it is your money, your wrist, your collection, your opportunity. Just make sure you'll have no regrets.

Let us know what you decided.

ยท

Speed master is wonderful watch

ยท

Yes

ยท

Buy two. Send one to me!

Seriously, if you can afford and will not affect your finances, go for it.

ยท

Dear readers, I bought the watch and itโ€™s lush.
