Grand Seiko vs Glashütte Original

Both stunning watches. Pricing is about the same, which do you go for? Very similar dimensions, though the GO is about 1mm thicker. The GS has 100m of water resistance and a bracelet. GO has 50m of water resistance and a leather strap. Bonus case backs. Comment which movement you think looks better! This is tough since they are both very different watches and yet both residing in that larger dressy/quasi sporty range, although the Pano in white can definitely work as a bona fide dress watch (bit chunky but still doable). I just acquired a GS and my next is a Pano Lunar in Green, so I'm not making the decision but getting both for the collection. But IF you are forced to choose I'd say the GS is going to be much more versatile and will get more wrist time.

One is a very nice watch and one is an expensive watch that makes it difficult to tell the time without reading glasses.

That’s fair! This GS leans more sporty and the GO leans more dressy. Both can do both, just depends what you want!

Two totally different watches, but I'd go GO, but get it in a color, the white is not really the best for it. Both are very cool watches, but where the GO separates itself is the movement. It is a work of art and the craftsmanship on the double bridge alone is worth it to me.

·

I voted for GO only because it's rarer. I agree with @AllTheWatches . If I were to get the GO, I'd rather get the blue or the green version.

·

One's a very shiny GADA watch and the other is a bit of an avant-garde dress watch imo. You choose what feels best for you. Best of luck!

·

Between these two, I'd go for the GS. However, if the Glashütte were a Seventies Panorama Date instead of the one in your poll I would have chosen that over the Grand Seiko.

I need the large print that’s why I love the Sinn 103 & my Ranger best

I know it’s not the same watch, but I have the SLGH009 which is very very similar to the SLGH013. It’s my favorite watch. The way it wears, the beauty of the ever brilliant steel, and the movement are just amazing to me.

That’s the limited edition blue dial version! Stunning watch! I feel like these versions are super underrated. The beauty of the 9SA5, the much better 19mm lug width vs most other 40mm Grand Seikos with 21 or 22mm width and the Ever Brilliant steel. All great features that not a lot of people pay attention to when comparing Grand Seikos.

I can’t choose something that looks like an 80’s mall watch over a Panomatic Lunar.

·

Grand Seiko all day long. Much prettier.

Sheesh that’s not a great take. Why do you think it looks like that? Have you seen them in detail?

I’ve been to a couple of GS boutiques. As a rule, they are about as boring as can be to me. About four years ago, I got to try my friend’s Snowflake and all I could think was “what’s all the hype about?”.

I do like the hi-beat GMT but it’s huge.

The Panomatic Lunar is gorgeous. I was offered a fantastic deal for one at an AD but I took my wife shopping with me that day. It didn’t turn out well for me but I still want the Pano.

Ok boring yeah I could see that, but definitely in a different universe than a mall watch. Lots of their watches are way too big.

The Pano is stunning and I hope to own one someday. You can find really great deals on one especially preowned.

Glashütte Original all the way!

Both have great backsides. For me the open caseback of the GO wins, but the dial side of the GS wins.

I tried on an 013 the other day and it was stunning in person, much better than pix. I haven't had a GO on wrist yet, mostly since it's way too dressy for my style. (Not that you couldn't go dressy with the 013, just that it's more versatile dressy/casual IMO)

The GO is a nice looking dress watch, just not my cup of tea.

One other minor aside: I get mixed up between all the Glashutte named watches so they tend to conflate with each other.

___ copied from an article on the heaps of watches with "Glashutte" in or around the name___

Today, there are nine manufacturers of Glashütte watches: Bruno Söhnle Glashütte, Moritz Grossmann, Mühle Glashütte, NOMOS Glashütte, Tutima and Wempe Glashütte. The Glashütte companies A. Lange & Söhne, Glashütte Original and Union Glashütte belong to Swiss corporations rather than German.

I’ll go with the GS only because of Spring Drive

·

I would probably go with the GS? But, then again that's just because I generally like more "boring" watches that can do it all (hell, my GADA is a blue BB58), and GS is as good as anyone at executing an amazing everyday piece. So, it would get more wrist time for me, making it more worth the money.

BUT, if I was feelin' a certain type of way I could see myself getting a PanoMatic Inverse just to stir the pot and get some funk in my collection!

Thanks, I adore it! And I totally agree with you, so many amazing features on these pieces that fly under the radar. I also think that the 44GS case is way underrated. The lines are just stunning, and I love the design. 44GS is by far my favorite GS case.

Voted for the Glashütte Pano. The GS is a very capable watch, nothing wrong with it - but for this kind of money I'm looking for more than that. The Pano (besides the manufacturer's history) offers just that imo: a dial you'll continue to look at and not just for reading the time. Important to mention though: I tried on the Pano a couple of weeks ago - and immediately decided it wasn't for me. Somehow, on my wrist, it just did not look right. But I managed to do that to a Jaeger LeCoultre Master Ultrathin Moonphase as well 😮

·

If you want to outbling the GS, the GO PanoInverse is the only option, and while we are at it, go for the inverse panomatic. A GO like no other watch.

Movement-wise the GS is one generation ahead, with a beautiful dial.

They should be next to each other in your watch box.

I personally find the Glashütte Original the winner here. I have a Grand Seiko White Birch with the 9SA5 Hi-Beat movement and I’ve experienced teething issues with that movement. And from what I’ve read and heard from other owners, I am not the only one to experience such issues. I had to send my GS back for a regulation, as mine was running almost a dozen seconds ahead per day. As others have stated, I would choose a different dial other than white for the GO. Their green and blue dials are stunning. And even more stunning are the PanoMaticInverse watches. It’s like having the exhibition caseback of the GO on the dial side of the watch. It’s mesmerizing in all its horological glory. In reality both watches are amazing in their own ways. That GS has the upper hand in material choice (Ever-Brilliant Steel), dial pattern & legibility. GO kills it on movement finishing (hand engraved balance bridge), regulation and asymmetrical dial design with panorama date (big date). I personally love how legible the big date is compared to most date windows on watches. Ideally you can have both in your collection as they suite different styles and situations. Including both in a collection is the only way a true collector goes about their decisions! We can never just have one!! 🤪😅🥂 Cheers!

I lean towards the GS due to the unique nature of the movement and the dial work, but the GO is a compelling option due to the complications.

Glashütte Original all the way!

You got that right. I'm not even sure there's a contest. GO is in a league all its own. My uneducated opinion, of course.
