To Be or Not to Be?

Sometimes we get a call from the AD. Or you go down to the shop and just wanna build the friendship. It just happens they don’t have the exact model you are looking for but something like it. Today I was thrown a Cartier Drive and a GP skeleton. Both super nice, but not what I asked for. I love how they find a nice way to say no. I honestly don’t know why some models or a specific colorway isn’t available. They will throw something at you as a carrot or something they want to push. I’ve been waiting for a simple Datejust 41, blue or slate dial with classic hour markers. For Omega, the Seamaster with the green dial and green rubber strap with an additional steel bracelet. What would you recommend if they came through today?

I’m mixed. But yes. I don’t have an omega in my collection 🤫

Everyone’s going to tell you to get the Omega. While I can’t argue with that, it’s a great watch, I also can’t do the HE valve. It’s unnecessary and looks silly. Plus that Rolex looks sweet. In the end, they’re both pretty great, so I’d get whatever you prefer. which would you wear more?

Both very nice watches ,but you asked for a DJ so I'd wait , unless your desperate for omega , cannot your old army buddy get the DJ

·

Get what you wanted: the DJ.

If you have the cash for that stowed away, then get a silly whim watch while you wait.

Not a Rolex guy at all...but just don't dig the Seamaster with that wavy dial...not in any color.

I was/am a huge fan of the Planet Ocean original design...this one...

Wow, that’s a beautiful watch.

·

I chose the seaweed cuz I the blue omega smp. And also I'd have the dj36 over the 41. I want a 36 in the worst way but can't afford it.

·

I’m in a similar quandary, Rolex DJ vs Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra vs Grand Seiko SBGA 293, simple time and date watches. As I can walk into a dealer today and pick up the Omega and the GS, my heart is telling me to hold out for the Rolex. I can see myself still wanting the DJ if I bought either the Omega or GS.

·

I'm not sure why, but the 2022 Omega novelties, or at least some of them, are super-hard to track down here.

I put my name down for a Green Seamaster and Rolex Explorer at the respective ADs. I received a call for the explorer within 3 months. I'm still waiting on the Green Seamaster and it's been almost a year to the day. That's something I never, ever thought I'd be able say!

I voted on the Green Seamaster 👍

My dad passed his omegas to my twin. I got his Rolex and AP. I wish to own an Omega one day.

Do you have an example

·

Nice cover photo, 4 iconic watches. That DJ is sublime in its simplicity.

·

Omega all day every day and twice on Sundays!!

You have some nice watches to tied you over till you get the omega

Oh I'm sure there's good ones but it seems those are few and far between 😥

Sad as it is, I think you're probably right.

That's a cracking watch. I need to track one of those down in the gold. 👌

This size DJ is pretty sporty, so sport vs sport I would have fun with it and rock the green SMP300. If it were a 36 DJ then that would be another battle.

The green SMP in the metal is awesome. Also I’m a little biased, I love my white smp300, wear it all the time.

Oh one more point on this overly analytical thread 😉. Both have ‘controversial’ points, He valve vs cyclops.

I don’t really notice the He valve, it’s presence or absence makes no difference for me as it doesn’t impact the view of the dial

On the Rolly it’s got the old man cyclops. For me, worst looking thing on any watch. It’s always warping the view, making a date complication 10x more unbalanced, and can’t be used unless looking from the perfect angle. I’m mid 50s and have zero issue reading date on any of my watches and none have a dial warping unbalanced looking cyclops. Maybe when I’m 80? But will I care about the date then?

I think Rolex really makes a mistake by forcing it on anyone who’d like a date on their watches. I always want a date, so that alone kind of rules out owning a Rolex (the cyclops is but one of several issues admittedly)

Oh yes. Very true

That is a tough one. They are both great watches so there are no bad choices here. But they are also very different watches in style/purpose. Which begs the question...do you want/need a diver? Or want/need a dress watch? I think there's where you'll find your answer.

But if it where my money? I'd go with the DJ 41 since I already have the blue Diver 300M!

Let us know what you decide, and pics when you get it!

That’s my problem. I don’t have an omega

·

You're looking at two separate use case watches -- one is far more sporty, the other far more dressy.

completely agree. But some DateJust models have become sporty

·

Both as they are different watches. I own a Seamaster and I'm waiting for a Datejust myself. I would go for the Datejust as it's hard to get any Rolex at retail. Much easier to get an Omega.

·

I picked the Omega.. but I would get the Rolex and find a new owner who would really enjoy having it, then turn around and buy the Omega and nice dinner.

·

I love the SMP 300 and own the white dial reference. But I have not jumped on the green bandwagon - just not a fan. That DJ will compliment any outfit, from a suit and tie to board shorts on the beach. My humble $0.02. I hope you get the opportunity to purchase both!

·

That all-silver DJ is gorgeous.

·

I bought my Seamaster 300m Green without a waitlist. I just walked in and saw it in the display.

I can't say the same thing for the DJ. Everytime I walk into a Rolex dealer, I get told they have nothing. That's why I voted for the DJ 41mm.

·

It's hard to beat a green dial so it's almost not fair just on looks alone!
