Roman numerals on the dial—out of style?

I’m looking at this vintage Datejust, and I love it, but the Roman numerals I’m not too sure about. I don’t know if it’ll be gaudy or out of style. What do you all think?

Not out of style at all. Always buy what you like.

I like it. I have two Roman numeral watches and they are favorites.

You’re right!

·

Absolutely not out of style. I love them!

·

Not out of style, just not my preference.

·

Most Cartier watches have Roman numerals. And they are number 2 brand after Rolex in the last year or two. They would not make those dials if it was out of style. The other thing is that you may not like it on that particular watch. So, you have to decide.

·

I’m not a fan mainly because they lack lume. A very solvable problem but it is what it is.

·

No, it's timeless

Been in fashion since about 900BC.

·

Some things are just classic and will not go out of style. This is one of those things (in my opinion)

·

Beautiful piece. Buy and wear what you love.

·

The datejust in any form is a timeless classic. Buy what you like! It will be a keeper!

·

Not at all out of style. Classic

·

Depends on the watch, on classier watches I prefer them.

Roman numerals just make sense on some watches/dials. IMO, dressier watches look better with roman numerals, no numerals or "stick" markers. I think the Cartier Santos is a perfect example.

·

It depends on the watch. I personally don't like it too much in the Rolex you are showing, and I give my opinion because you asked for it, but as everyone says, if you like it, enjoy it!

I love a classic Roman numeral dial like this Raymond Weil Parsifal

I think it looks great. Depends on how Roman numerals are done, but I think they are really classy. That watch is sporty, so it should downplay the dressy aspect of numerals.

·

Style and trends don't matter. Buy what speaks to you.

Personally, I'm not a fan of roman numerals nor California dials, but I think it's a timeless design nonetheless.

I don't think there is any issue with Roman numerals on a dial...it is pure class...

Congrats on the new timepiece!

·

Nope, not out of style. Not seen as versatile perhaps, but that is subjective. On a Datejust - Roman Numerals are just at home and appropriate as batons in my opinion.

·

I really like the small Romans on the track of my 16220 - I say if you like it go for it!

I’m a big fan off Roman numerals on dress watches . On the DateJust though I think they are a little off , I don’t like the imbalance of the 1 and 11 o’clock numerals, i prefer the daydate with deconstructed roman numerals.

I like Roman numerals.

https://dhayton.haverford.edu/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/TalbertChap1.pdf WatchCrunch inspires a deep dive. The nearly 100 "watches" recovered from Pompeii use Latin notation. These numerals aren't going out of fashion. I've included a reference - one of many. IMO the execution is most important, Rolex exudes gravitas; Cartier style.

·

I think it is ok on that particular watch but overall do not like Roman numerals on any watch except for the Cartier Tank and various Santos models. Managed to upset a Cartier boutique manager last week when I said that the Calibre on his wrist was a no because of the Roman numerals on the dive watch.

It's not out of style but you can fall out of love with it. I use to like/love roman numerals unfortunately I did fall out of love. This baby feels lonely a lot. 😭
