Islander Watch and the Logo Question

Hi everyone,

I love Islander watch and recently purchased my first piece from them. I also really enjoy Marc’s (the owner of LIW) content on YouTube. That said, a lot of people take issue with the logo. They say it’s too bland, uninspired, etc., and some people even say it prevents them from buying an Islander watch. My question to you is, what would you suggest to Marc as an alternative logo? I could imagine something like a palm tree or simply “Islander” in stylized font would look nice. Thoughts?

I'm not the biggest fan of his logo but I still buy his watches. I think once he put the islander text on the dial it made the watches look better.

The logo is fine. I don't understand the hate toward it.

Neither do I!

It's a logo.

And there are no palm trees on Long Island. Well, maybe a few plastic ones in the Hamptons.

·

I have the ISL-116 Southold and just received the ISL-127, the 38mm diver with the NH38 and the champagne dial. I'm fine with both watches, where the 116 just has the logo and the 127 has the logo under the 12 and "ISLANDER" above the 6. Further, I bought one of their fully lumed dials for a mod I like to call the Faux-Lander. I guess I must like the logo.

Haha, true! I guess if you want to lean into the “Long Island” part of “Islander”, a palm tree isn’t the best choice.

I actually like the logo.

Me too.

When it comes to designing watch logos, simplicity is key. A clean and minimalist logo works best because watches are small objects, and intricate design details can be lost during manufacturing.

While a boring logo won't necessarily affect the quality of a good watch, a poorly designed one can detract from its overall appeal.

My personal preference often leans towards typography rather than icons, but the absence of a brand name wouldn't necessarily deter me from buying a watch.

I've been able to borrow two different Islanders from Marc/Ryan to test for our website, both Port Jefferson models. I've also personally purchased one of the newer Fliegers. I think that the logo is minimalist, and I personally dig it.

I've got a couple & bought my adult son one as well. I like the logo for it's clean look. What I prefer is the older models that have only the logo & no name. I wish more companies would do one or the other. I don't believe a Rolex or Omega need the name AND the logo. It's just too much clutter. Baltic, Christopher Ward, Oak & Oscar, Zelos, Phoibos, & many more do it better by keeping the branding to a minimum in my opinion.

I'm one of those people who has zero issue with the logo and have always found criticism of it to be odd. I've also seen a video where Marc acknowledges some don't like it, but he has absolutely no intention of changing it. He went into why the logo means a lot to him.

·

I don't mind the logo myself.

·

I don't have a problem with that logo. It's simple and to the point. Before the logo, I believe he did only have "ISLANDER" text at the 12 o'clock position. Now, if it was my choice that's all I would want at that position with "AUTOMATIC" at the 6.

i personally love the logo --- and this version with the ISLANDER text is actually extremely balanced.

the circular logo itself is useful when it can be applied as a stamp, on the case back, crown, etc..

but hey, we're all entitled to our opinions! :)

·

I like it, it's simple, recognisable and also works well on a crown! With the text is also good, though for Flieger or field without is probably better. My Islander has no dial branding.. and I wish it did!

·

Maybe the logo is a bit boring and generic, but I have absolutely no problem with it visually. Really don’t understand why it would keep anyone from buying a watch. I love Marc‘s content (especially his talks with TGV) and the Islander brand as well.

Anyway here‘s my ISL-91

What do you think of this logo? The fact that the app splash screen has the right and bottom edge cropped out and the top and left side bleeding into the background always bothered me.

What?

The reality is that the logo is tiny on a watch compared to a computer/phone screen. When displayed huge and in isolation the asymmetry is noticeable, when on a watch, less so. Especially given no watch is completely symmetrical in any case.

I think somebody once created a logo for him with a lighthouse as motiv. This is in one of Mark's videos. I like that logo better.

·

Maybe he could use the Montauk lighthouse as a logo?

·

Considering he had a stone mason recreate the logo for his backyard patio, I doubt it's changing anytime soon.

That is only for the new case back design. They had competition for the case back, not the logo. Old case back was just a etching of Long Island.

Hate the logo. Hate the name. Love what he does and sells.

Putting a picture of a watch face on a watch face is so silly. Just not a good logo.

This. I love his business idea to fill the niche of low priced custom Seiko demand but the logo is not good.

·

I like the idea of a palm tree type design

Whoever don’t approve of the logo, they can start their own company and pick one….

·

Hate is such a strong word to begin with. If someone really hates on a watch brand I’d potentially reconsider the hobby. Personally, not a big fan of the downwards pointed hand in the logo, but at the same time I dig that it looks somewhat like a miniature complication. It would probably not stop me buying a watch I like.
