New model from Rolex - the brand that’s never looking back

Wasn’t this a surprise? It’s said that Rolex is never looking back, only forward. Looking back is Tudor’s job. But look here is model 1908 in 39mm. Good work I say!

Looks like a different take on the Cellini imho.

That is a fair statement. The Cellini seems discontinued. But I find this new model to be a real throw back to early Rolex. Crisp instead of a bit tired Cellini.

·

Oh hello...

·

Given the fact that Rolex are far better known for their sports models, and that the Cellini seems to have been unpopular, I do wonder If this model will fare well even if it does look great to me.

·

I also think it will be in the shadow of their sports. But I give an A for effort. I think it is a beautiful watch.

·

That looks very un-Rolex - I like it!

Was the Cellini that bad a name that it needed a re-brand?

I suppose it’s in keeping with Tudor 1926 model range in terms of naming convention…

I thought of 1926 as well.

I wonder if it would ever appear in steel?

Since there is a white gold I guess no. 1926’s arena?

I guess they don’t want to steal each other’s market but it’s like saying a Sub and a Pelagos are competing against one another

Rolex has its own 1926 model, which Baltany homages under the name "1926".

Anyway, I like the looks much better than their sports models. I would not buy it, because I'm sure it is in the painful price range for me (and the very thought of entering the Rolex AD game gives me the creeps anyway), but I'd say this is actually elegant.

I would predict that before April is up we see homages to that on Ali.

·

I like it. I would definitely wear it. To be honest though it kind of just looks like a Bambino at 10 times or more the price.

Hopefully with a TMI movement! 😂

By far the best of them for me, but for 25k I think it is, I struggle to square it against a VC or Patek. Perhaps if you get access to a Daytona on the side? 😅

I think everything on W&W 2023 is being laser scanned and 3D printed as we speak….!

At that price point, they’re up against Lange’s Saxonia Thin - that’s a tough battle to win even if you did love Rolex

Does it remind anyone else of the Omega CK859?

Not like a copycat but all brands seems to have an option from the 30s in the catalogue.

·

Funnily enough, I've been calling for Rolex to decorate their movements and have display case backs. If they want to charge Patek prices, they need to make their watches more artistic and less tool-like. In my view, this is a step in the right direction.

·

Good bye forever Cellini! This is just what Rolex needed for their dress watch which have been lacking for such a long time. No longer is Rolex only a sport model watch company -- wish I could afford this.

·

Maybe just my imagination but I think is more crisp. Obviously a throw back but more definite design language than the Cellini.

It certainly is a bit different than the older Cellini, but close enough that I don't think anyone would have been confused if it had been labelled as a 1908 Cellini. The old rectangular Cellini Prince was a much larger departure from the other "traditional" Cellini models, but I feel that the 1908 is essentially a Cellini with a different name. I do like the fact that they brough back the display caseback.

I thought this would appeal to you as soon as I saw it!

It looks lovely. Way out of my budget , overpriced and certainly unobtanium! But it does look like a very classy watch and a restrained design. A for effort and quite unlike Rolex of recent times!

And now 2 models with display case back in this launch💪 I have no overview over Patek’s prices but aren’t they another 10K for a gold 3-hander?

Yes, this is right up my alley. Butbthenthe competion is tough, as many pointers out, if I ever go for an exit gold watch.

·

Finally one I’d think about.

For a white gold calatrava 3 hand, you're looking at about £30k

Exactly, I struggle to justify the price. Not that I would every spend so much on a watch. But as you say, there are other brands at that level that offer more.

My guess. This is meant for non watch collectors who want to show off a Rolex dress watch.

these are by far my favorite introductions at www

It's al welcome change from their largely Tool Watch product catalogue, I'm cool with this

I think it's a new timeless classic. The watch is beautiful. I am most impressed with this new Rolex offer. I think it's actually priced very reasonably as well. What did you think of the new Daytona? Open caseback like this beauty. Rolex didn't derail the dial on the steel model

To me the new Daytona was a big relief. I now think the black steel is in my reach even if it can take a while. They didn’t blow up the case size even if it is a fraction bigger. And they kept the style of the sub dials. The steel edge of the bezel was a big plus. It’s all good👍
