I don't need this watch.

The seiko land tortoise. I don't need it.

I just sold three watches and find myself without a beater watch, and the tortoise would be the perfect fit, except  contrary to what many YouTubers would have you believe, you don't need a beater watch. My watch with the most water resistance is 10atm and that's perfect for swimming, which I've done twice this year, and I live in California.

And it's not that I expect to do much in the way of hiking either, the most outdoorsy I get is when walking the dog.

And besides it's an ugly watch, in a beautiful charming sort of way, the way a Van Gogh painting is ugly.

See, I don't need the seiko land tortoise, I don't.

You know what you do need?  One of these watches...  all of which will be going up for charity auction in the new year!

Having never been a fan of cushion cases, I still don’t find this watch ugly.  The dial appears to have a translucent quality as if it were to sport the word “Indiglo” and the khaki colour theme is different enough to stand out from the crowd.

That said, there are times when you want to wear a watch that you don’t need to worry about damaging, because it’s tough enough, or cheap enough, or both.  That’s your beater.

Yep, I don't like the other colorways, but I do like this one.

Lol, enjoy yours! I'm not getting it because I don't need it :p

Love mine! It’s a watch I don’t need, but it constantly ends up on my wrist in the summertime.

I don’t get watches that promise something but them get you to do all the work.  If you want a compass then this might be an option, want to know where North is? Press the button.

XD you guys are supposed to talk me out of buying it but the opposite is happening.

One can be in need of what is called a beater depending on ones homelife, work and collection.

Something that is more rugged and less costly to put on if you are gonna do some risky stuff.

I like the dial color of this Turtle 😍

quite like this version of the Tortoise. the dial contrast great, in my mind a solid beater

I was born in Mexico and travel there often... You have a good point here sir.

Hey Paisano! I support your unecessary aquisition. I made two purchases recently, and youre doing much better with 2 less overall haha.

I usually travel with a solar Seiko myself. They make great companions.

I have no beater watch, and I never will have one.

True, went on vacation early this year, did some ATV and jet ski activities, didn't take my phone with me so a watch was a great thing to have, they are useful, I just don't see myself in that situation all that often.

I really appreciate your post and the photos, I'll sleep on it and come back in a month to make the decision.

I'm totally in agreement, taking some time and thinking about watches is smart.

One thing that should be noted with this color way, that caught me off guard, the hand aren't as black as they look in the pics. When I bought it from the AD I almost thought I got sent a fake, but a: this AD hadn't been known to be anything but stellar, and b: after more research I found out that they are actually a dark gunmetal that is polished. In some light they look grey, but most photos make them blackish. (The last pic I posted earlier shows this if you zoom)

Just something to note.

Why is that? I'm interested in hearing your thoughts.

I just don't think any watch should be beaten.  I mean, if I know that a certain activity is probably going to damage my watch, I simply take it off.  For me this would mean wrenching on the car or working in the yard, I just put the watch in my pocket for the duration.  Why damage stuff?

That's true, that might be taking the term "beater watch" literally, and lots of people do wear their watches like that. But like I mention before, to me a "beater" watch would be used to wear at home while doing groceries, walking the dog, etc. that's as physical as it gets for me, and the most beating would be some hairline scratches, maybe a ding or two on the case.

·

The thing is, nobody really need a watch, but we are all lucky to live in a world where we are allowed to buy things that we want, not only just that we need.

I don't have a beater watch either and it took me some time to understand the concept behind this term. What I got is that you build up a collection of watches that you like but end up wearing the one that you don't. It's kind like a primitive tribe that once a year sacrifice the least loved member of the tribe to some kind of local monster in order to ensure the safety of the rest and a good harvest. So having a beater watch ensure that the rest of the collection fares well and prosper I guess.

It’s need vs want at play

NEED? When was  need apart of the equation?
