I have a PVD coated Seiko chronograph from the 80's. I actually really like the distressed look it has now with the black finish having faded or been scratched up here and there. It gives the watch a nice rugged quality. It's probably not the kind of appearance you'd want for a dress watch, but for a tool watch like this I think it works.
Most of the time I prefer to wear a watch with a date complication and most of my watches have them, but I don't really need it. There's something to be said for the uncluttered look of a watch that simply tells you what time it is.
