The Itch needs a scratch!

I promised myself, that I would take a break from watch buying. I've recently been on holiday and need to recoup some of the money spent. But they keep coming to me at night telling me it's time to scratch the itch again. I keep drooling over the Tudor BB 58, but I cannot bring myself to spend that amount of money. I look at the price and think I could buy 3, maybe 4 good watches for the same money?

So I've tried to put these thoughts to the back of my mind. But you know what it's like, fellow watch collectors... You find yourself drooling over a diver in a jeweller's window, watching another Youtube unboxing, lying in bed needing to get to sleep, but the image of your latest desire keeps popping up in you head.

Well it looks like I need to sctach the itch. It may not be straight away, but it will be within the next month or two. I think it will be the Seiko Prospex Divers Mens Watch SPB147J1. Why? because I think it's as good as the Tudor at a fraction of the price. What are you thoughts? (PS I am a bit of a Seikophile).

And for the record, my last purchase was only a month ago... I know I've got it bad.

I have the BB58 and the SPB143. Both are great watches. There is a difference in quality. But that is nothing I reflect on in my daily wear.

I think with the SPB147 you get simular retro feeling with faux patina. So it boils down to price, your prefered look and size. The SPB is larger, thicker and heavier.

·

I know the exact same feeling……it’s like a curse 😫

·

Who we kidding here, you'll buy another 💯 I said the same after buying my latest Sinn 556 and here I am looking at a Tudor Black Bay 36 or a Longines Spirit.

It's a disease mate and you've got it just as bad as the rest of us on WatchCrunch 🤣😂

·

Take a look at the Glycine 39 Combat sub… I think it shares a bit more with the BB58 than even the SPB. The Seiko is a nice looking piece though and highly regarded in its own right. 🤙

·

Yes I know exactly what you mean. I actually stop by my AD to ck out the exact watch since I’m ichi for Tudor myself specifically the bronze version. The spb147 has that gilt kinda similar to the bb but much smaller and actually more wearable just my opinio, I have a bb heritage and Man that watch is thick compared to the spb147. i have both watches and wearability and comfort I gravitate towards the Seiko BUT the Tudor has something special that I keep just admiring about it’s weird… anyway GO and scratch away!! Lol

I personally like their new dark lineup

Hands-On - Seiko Prospex Black Series SRPH97K1 and SRPH99K1

The stark reality is the once you get the bug, no matter how much you promise yourself that this will be your last watch, you are kidding yourself, it’s not going to happen.

I have been down the buying a higher quality watch route many times. I found that in most cases I was underwhelmed, my latest example was an Omega Speedmaster Moon, which lasted a month. I too echo your internal wrangling, should I go big or should I get three or four lesser watches.

in my case and probably others, the trying out of several  watches gives me more pleasure and anticipation than just one. No doubt there are polar opposite’s to this, but that’s just me. Whichever camp you are in, it’s the collectors curse but we do it because we obviously enjoy it or we’d all be wearing £15 casios.

good luck.

·

Your screwed… whatever you end up choosing won’t be enough.

·

I have tried taking out my entire collection and display them all right in front of my eyes. It does help sometimes to tame the desire to some degree after looking at all the watches that I have. But yes, a nice watch SPB147!! :)

I own a Glycine 36 Combat with a blue face and oddly enough, I spotted the 39 Combat sub on here this morning. And yes it might be an alternative. The price also looks good for such a watch.

Trouble is I have a £15 casio and love it. That's the problem I love them all!!! 😜 And the same as you, I just don't feel I can pull the trigger on a luxury purchase buy. There always be a part of me saying, 'just think of the other watches you could purchase with that money?'

That makes it worse. You start to think is there something missing? 😂

Oops!

The question is, which one to get first.

May you elaborate more on the quality difference you mentioned.

·

I can totally relate. I’d go Seiko but don’t doubt the Tudor is higher quality. However, for me the improvements aren’t significant enough to warrant the price.

May you elaborate more on the quality difference you mentioned.

As said nothing I think about in my daily wear but:

- there is misalignment with the bezel on Seiko, also the SPB

- BB58 has a better movement with better spec

- the crown works smoother to operate on BB58

-the bracelet has not a perfect fit with the case on the SPB

- I could say that the matt brushing on the case is better on the BB58, but you could also argue that that is a matter of design.

But, said again, both are great watches.

Hi My name is Markus and I'm watchaholic 👋

The big thing you need to ask yourself is "Will spending more on a watch make me like the watch more?".

Personally, I have come to the conclusion that spending more for a name, and slightly better finishing isn't worth the cost. I tend to stick to watches in the $1-2K CAD (SPB147 $1300 CAD) price range because I find that is the sweet spot for me with finishing, and specs. I find spending less than that tends to lead to disappointment, because the finishing is usually lacking.

·

I have the 147 and it’s my go-to dive watch; perfect for work, travel, and timing the pizza in your oven. I actually tried on a BB58 about 6 months ago and something about the Seiko struck me as more interesting. The Tudor is clearly the ‘finer’ watch but the sunburst dial, wide case bevels, and polished dual furniture just add up to, in my view, a more interesting watch to look at.  If you have a Tudor AD nearby I’d strongly recommend checking them out in person, but I also doubt you’d regret just picking up the Seiko.

Sometimes when you think your watch list is satisfied, along comes another watch that for the price you just can’t resist. Happened to me recently, namely a Alpina Seastrong at a considerable discount. Oops, there goes some more funds. 😁

That's the hook! At a considerable discount! 🤣

The other think about owning a luxury watch is how often would it get worn out. I be frightened about damage or loss... So I think I've answered my own question? 😂

They looks nice. I think @playboyheafner can fill you in on that one.

·

Now this may be controversial, but have you ever considered a knock off Tudor? I've been obsessed with the Tudor Pelagos FXD and can't even afford $6k on a watch. But thought maybe in order to motivate myself to the point of affording it. I haven't looked into it, just a thought? I know it's rather Taboo.

I got it even worse than you....
