Am I the only enthusiast on this planet that has absolutely ZERO interest in GMT watches?

I admit that I am completely sick of seeing all of these new gmt watches coming out left and right. I have zero interest in them. If I need a gmt function I have my Casio Royale and dive watches.

Every single ad I’m seeing these days is about the newest gmt coming from this brand or that brand. Grrr! 🤬

I’ll get off of my soapbox now.

I need to state that I do not hate the complication. I know how useful it is and the use of it. The part that is getting under my skin is that since it is the “new hot trend” it is being pushed everywhere. It is just annoying me. I do not hate it.

yes. next question 😜

·

Now do moon phase watches.

·

I feel you man. Couldn’t agree more

·

I have a couple of GMTs but I'd gladly remove the relevant hand & be more than happy without it. If you cannot work out the time elsewhere in the world in seconds then you need to go back to school 😜

Now do moon phase watches.

Lol I’m not interested in them, but they aren’t being advertised every single time I look somewhere.

·

Lol. It’s on trend. Let’s get back to talking about integrated bracelet watches!🤪

·

I’m with you to an extent. The function doesn’t appear ‘that practical’ to me. I prefer the GMT hand to look like an hour hand too and not many do. That’s why I like the FC world timer.

·

And in your circumstance, I am happy and thankful. I really don’t travel much, at least not more than a 800 mile radius usually. For me they just aren’t practical. Also I’m kind of used to keeping track of things in my head as far as other timezones.

·

Are you my long lost brother?

I have no use for them whatsoever. They are everywhere. I feel like they are taking the spotlight away from other noteworthy pieces.

·

Lol

·

Well, i don t need a gmt one, but i can appreciate them. Like the looks (mostly), and get joy out of the thinking somebody will buy them and be happy with it. Hate is a so harsh word imho...

·

😂 But every collector "needs" one .....🫠🤔😜

In all seriousness though, it is a terribly useful complication for anyone who might need to track another time zone. Not just for flyers.

Family, friends, remembering special places, etc.

Over the last two years these have been my two most favorite dial and/or bezel complications.

Cheaper GMT movements have democratized them for the masses, so of course you will continue to see them. Before Seiko dropped their lastest one the narrative was “Why can’t we have a <$1k GMT?” Now we have them and brands are leaning in hard.

·

To each his/her own. Nobody can tell you to like anything other than what you like. That’s what makes the swipe finger so powerful. Move along to something that inspires you and let everyone enjoy what they enjoy 👍😃

I bought an expensive GMT and now I don’t have any money to travel anywhere

·

To be honest I prefer a dual bezel (timer and 12 hour scale) to a GMT movement.

Mainly due to simplicity but also because the extra hand is executed so poorly on many of the GMT watches. It is often rather clunky and not in sympathy with the three hand handset. I get that it needs to be distinct but it doesn’t need to look like something that shouldn’t be there.

·

I am a fan of GMTs, Triple calendar moonphases, moonphases would own a few more perpetual calendar watches if my bank account was less whimsical, love my Breitling Navitimer 1461 4 year annual calendar which will require an adjustment this February. I seem to recall retiring my 2tone Rolex Datejust for a blue dial Breitling Chronomat in 1989 because it had a stopwatch function was just a bit more interesting than a boring 3 hander from a slightly better manufacture. When I was collecting vintage watches the thoughtful seller was trying to determine my interests to better vacuum dollars from my wallet: some guys collect a certain period or shape, or brand etcetera. It eventually occurred to him that I was keen to source interesting complications, still a preference today.

·

I think it’s the most useful complication along with a date function. Yes it’s a trend at the moment but in few years it will be something else. Why get wound up about? if you pardon the pun!

·

100% agreed. It needlessly complicates the movement to boot, and I work across two different time zones daily

·

I have absolutely no need for a GMT and yet here we are 🤷‍♂️🙄

I actually really like GMTs because my family lives all over the world. (I can also just do the math in my head). It’s rather nice having a watch set to pacific time with the gmt set to EST

·

Gmts are cool, but agreed with you on gmt bezels. Dive bezels are always the most useful complication!

It is so easy to use a dive bezel for a gmt also

·

I don’t travel much and if I do it’s to Europe from the UK with a 1 hour time difference so the GMT hand is totally unnecessary. I don’t like GMT watches where the GMT hand is brightly coloured and consequently is the first thing you see when glancing at a watch to tell the time. Some GMT hands are much more subtly done and therefore, in my opinion, much more acceptable.

Agreed, thanks to NH34, now every brands are trying to offer GMT watches on different price level thinking not to let Seiko play the lonely child.

I suspect there is a touch of the romantic, world traveller image going on here, harking back to an era when if you could afford a watch with a GMT function you were also a well-travelled jet-setter type. That image probably also helps account for the love of the complication today. For me (definitely not well travelled these days and with no far flung friends and family) it doesn't appeal because it has no practical application. In terms of more fanciful complications I think I would prefer a moonphase or chime before a GMT. But I can understand, particularly for those with family in another time zone, it would be lovely to have that hand set to their time as a sentimental reminder.

·

If it’s not for you, that’s fine. My head office is 8 hours ahead and my mother 8 hours behind.

I don’t like some complications like chiming or moonphase.

HERETIC!!!
