[End asides]

So, the other night, my wife said, “Honey, please, I’ve told you a number of times, please don’t put anything on top of the strainer in the dishwasher.  That way, I can get it out easily in the morning!”  She likes loose leaf tea, you see.  Thus, she needs a strainer.  And she doesn’t like having to move bowls or other sundry utensils out of the way to get to the strainer in the dishwasher in the morning!

I said…

Image

But, no.  No divorce.  Just, you know... DON’T PUT ANYTHING ON TOP OF THE STRAINER IN THE DISHWASHER!!!

Nonetheless, this brings up a very serious question:  When is it time to finally call it quits?

Behold!  Here is my SLGA007...

Image

It’s a beautiful watch.  Some have called it the ideal GS!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVqP1JGnsdk

But, I think it may be time for divorce for me...

Image

I don’t know, man!  It’s great, but somehow…

Image

I think I may have to sell it, to fund my purchase of the SBGC253…

Image

Normally, I would keep the Lake Suwa and buy the new watch, but since I’m still saving up for the upstairs remodel, I gotta implement a 1-in-1-out policy…  otherwise my wife really just might go through with…

Image

How do you know when it’s time to call it quits on a watch???

Wake up in the morning and choose violence. Sounds like my house with 4 people and 2 bathrooms.

I think it's different for everyone. I personally need to be sure I don't like it anymore. That's why I haven't sold any of my watches yet. 🤪

You're welcome.

·

Tough call. It’s trading down by a third. Maybe buy used. https://www.chrono24.com/grandseiko/ref-sbgc253.htm#gref

Entertaining as always sir. Was saying yo @DeeperBlue and @English_archer at Stockholm Time that I’ve been missing your posts. Afraid I can’t help you though. I got all my watch storage boxes/winder early on so I’ve known almost since the start that I was going to be limited to 22 watches. I think I’d struggle to get rid of favourites in an established collection.

Good luck 🍀👍.

Nobody likes a quitter.

My god... if I don't sell anything, the collection will continue to grow to over 20!!!

And you know what??? The worst things in my life have occurred when I DIDN'T quit fast enough. I mean, my entire career has been a long litany of failures and regrets, because I stuck it out for too long!

Every single job I've had for the past 20 years, this is what I should have done...

I thought I would quit at maybe a handful - didn’t.

I thought I would quit at a Trinity - didn’t happen.

I thought I would quit when I inexplicably developed, and scratched, the Rolex itch - it didn’t happen.

I thought I would quit after 6 months on here - I didn’t. I’m a watch journalist now. Who would have thought…

Don’t quit - you’ll only develop another hobby and bore the wife even more.

Sorry, you're right. I should have been clearer.

LOVE Chrono24! I think my broker can get it for me for the lowest price on Chrono24. The only issue with buying from Japan is that I gotta then pay a) sales tax, b) shipping fees, c) customs duties, and d) CA use tax. By the time I pay all these fees, it practically costs the same as MSRP! By broker can probably get me a new one, in hand, overnight shipping, all-in, for less than $9k!!!

Thank you, sir! Unfortunately, my job has interfered with my far more important work of posting and commenting on WC lately! My employer is requiring me to actually work...

Also, weirdly, I've really gotten into mixed martial arts in a big way. And what's even more awesome is that my 10 year-old daughter is really into it too! So, when I should be on WC, I'm teaching her groin strikes and eye gouges, and we've been doing UFC marathon watching sessions on YouTube!

Cool watch, but you've got 200ish other GSs. I don't see the dilemma. Your wife is much more beautiful.

No lume is a deal breaker for me with watches. Took me 3 years to figure that out.

But what about your Carl F. Bucherer flyback chrono??? It's gorgeous, but it doesn't have lume, right?

Watch Math made for Fred aka Dummies = Some's good more's better! Why single 20 the bar! Let's not talk about scaling back until we hit 50!

·

SBGC253 all the way! Next year when you auction off your Handel Mr. Dee Bater (although clever) is gone... Beast Master or Titanium Lion come to mind 🤔

·

I’ve only sold one watch.

1. I’ve noticed I always skip it when it comes time to pick the watch for the day

2. It was something I actually bought and not a gift

There are definitely watches in my collection I don't love as much as others.

My smart watch and gshock don't have that same emotional attachment but that's ok, they are (awesome) tools that I beat up regularly, I don't want to be too sentimental

My invicta diver and pagani chrono were affordable testers. Turns out I'm not huge into either style, but they are still great little watches for the price, and I still wear them just just fun/variety so I'm more than happy to keep them and enjoy them thoroughly

Overall keeping even those I don't love as much has several advantages. I have a large versatile collection so I never get bored. My tastes have refined but they are still great watches. And owning so many staves off the desire to spend more

When one gets the SBGA407 skyflake. Nothing else would do.

This may not be exactly helpful but years ago, I was often sent to represent the design firm that employed me as the token Asian when dealing with clients in the East despite having lived most of my life in the West, very expensive tea was often served in lovely cups with tea leaves floating freely in each drinker’s cup since often times, different varieties were offered as a courtesy. On one occasion my host/ client was a cocky arrogant Harvard grad who had returned to his native Taiwan and was acquainted with my wife’s family who took pleasure in exposing my lack of familiarity with simple customs and habits,he noticed my struggles with the loose green tea leaves in my cup and quietly suggested that the leaves were still young and tasty to nibble on. This was the same git who mocked my 2 tone Rolex Datejust as being oafish since the fashionable folks wore either steel or single precious metals; I could not trust him but have since learned that it is in fact a preferred method to drink fragrant tea in the East, no need for strainers and debates at home.

I am a relative newcomer to Grand Seiko, still searching for a first spring drive( I am not much of a fan of titanium watches), have investigated different models at my regular ad but am not convinced the SBGC253 is a serious upgrade over the Lake Suwa already in your collection. I do understand the attraction but personally am not comfortable buying a watch that potentially needs to be shipped to Japan or even to New Jersey for proper servicing.

Finally I would choose relevant building renovations easily over another interesting timepiece but in my own life, additional watch purchases are not controversial with the Mrs since she loves frivolous items that make no sense also but she would ignore divorce, moving directly to murder should I plan anymore chaotic renovations to our ancient hovel.

You've got it good. They (wives) usually insist on chaotic ancient hovel renovations.

Lol just snuck a quick one in the Mrs had to spend a day at some industry event that was an all day affair. I love fussing with my old building!

It's like owning your own watch store and every day getting to choose a different watch from your stock.
