How do you pick which watch to wear?

For people with a collection how do you decide which watch to wear a given day?

I’ll go first, I often decide which to wear based on my outfit but there are days when I just wanna wear a particular watch and I wear it regardless of the outfit and the problem with that is some of my watches get more wrist time than the others.

Trying to find a perfect balance but would love to hear all your thoughts.

P.S. To the one watch person here - I’m so jealous of you..

Partly the reason I want to cool it on buying new watches, and perhaps size down a bit. Already have too many to give them all wrist time regularly.. I generally try to rotate them all

·

What is the 3rd watch there in your collection? Looks awesome, but I don't think I've ever seen it before!

There isn’t a lot of rhyme or reason to my morning selections. Sometimes I want my watch to blend with my outfit, sometime I want it to clash and stand out. Recently I’ve shelved all that and am working with my #1wc and I’ll admit it’s a bit liberating though I also miss the morning choosing ritual.

I’ve got themed days to help me out eg. microbrand Monday, Titanium Tuesday etc. That helps me narrow it down and then it’s just whatever takes my fancy.

·

First, I don’t buy/keep a watch if I don’t enjoy wearing it.

Then I have three categories.

1) Cheap Casio digitals and Duros for when I feel like it. These are chosen less often but I like having them around. Going to a pool party? Blue Duro. Going to a snobby restaurant? Calculator watch is a perverse joy.

2) I have two dressier watches with Hessalite crystals. I choose these based on outfit/wearing conditions.

3) Everything else. I can randomly grab one of these and be happy doing anything. Most of my WRUW posts are from this category. This category makes up the bulk of my small collection (13 watches).

1) What are you doing today? Work, outdoor activities, water sports?

2) What outfit are you wearing?

3) Are you trying to flex? 😜

pants …. Pants dictates my watch…

1) what am I doing at the time. Working on my beach or in the yard, a bulletproof diver.

2) what I’m wearing. I love a touch of blue if I have jeans on or a blue shirt or jacket.

3) who I’ll be with. If I’m with watch people, I’ll wear something I know they’d enjoy. If I’m with people who are likely notice a blingy watch, I’ll wear something they won’t recognize.

4) I’ll pick a piece based on how it makes me feel.

As i don t give a sh.. if my watch fits to my clothing, i take a watch wich i like to wear. Mostly i got a feeling after standing up what watch it might be

It’s this one: https://www.titan.co.in/product/xylys-classic-black-dial-chronograph-with-date-watches-for-men-9295dm04. It’s from a Swiss brand called Xylys owned by Titan, an Indian watch brand.

Yeah it gets tougher, I have added 2 more watches to my collection since this picture and yeah I think I’m gonna stop(fingers crossed) buying watches for a couple years

In the summer, I just prefer wearing a watch with a bracelet.

That’s interesting. I put my watches on either a rubber or a nato strap except for my Explorer2 for the summer and switch it back to a bracelet in the fall.

Do tell us which is your #1wc

Mark of a real collector haha

When I'm working then it's mostly what I feel like that day - usually will go for the more robust options.

On normal days I decide depending on the activities I will be doing e.g. exploring the city = Cartier, going to the beach = Orient Mako, etc.

Good luck with that:)

I’m wearing my Tudor Ranger for the one watch challenge. What more could I need than that? It’s got me ready to severely downsize the collection too.

Concur 👍🏼, mine has me thinking the same , maybe just get the Pearl white dialled GMT & be done with it from Tudor and sell everything else bar an Omega dress watch .

Activity based. 😁and wrist time

There is no rhyme or reason to my watch selection. I choose without regard to my clothes. I say I have “work watches” but I’m as likely to wear a Tank or Octo to work as a Timex.

Mine’s colour scheme of my shirt !

I find the pants color scheme matches well try it out 😉🍻

·

My four (Sub, Explorer II, Datejust 41 and Speedmaster Professional) are on a regular rotation. I’m not strict but it’s roughly a swap every 2-3 days and I might miss one out sometimes.

If there’s a particular outfit I’m wearing I usually pick a watch to go with it but for most of the week whatever watch I have on works with what I wear.

·

Well...it's complicated.

I try to give equal wrist time to every watch, which logically would direct me to pick a pick a position, lets say upper left, and go through every watch from left to right, top to bottom and back again to the top left. That's it - problem solved, moving on.

Image

Except that there are watches that I like more, I also want to alternate between mechanical and quartz, and there are watches that wears better with some clothing, and therefore I often just stand in front of the shelves and let my hand go and pick one without trying to over think and complicate the issue.

It works for me so far but YMMV of course.

·

It is either compliment what I am wearing or building an outfit around a particular watch.

·

I wear whatever watch I feel like wearing! I pretty much only wear jeans or shorts of a neutral colour with a black t-shirt, so any watch can fit. If I know I'm gonna be sweating or hauling gear around (I'm a musician), I tend to wear a G-Shock, and if I have a stage outfit, I try to choose something that fits the type of show I'm playing. I usually bring a show watch on these days and change for the performance!

Oh the times when I only had one watch and didn't bother... I sometimes forget it was like that until last December! 😅

·

I generally try to wear all my watches on rotation except if it does not fit the occasion, task, destination or objective for the day. In which case, the right tool for the job gets the call.

·

I try to match the watch with my clothes most of the time. Occasionally I just pick my Tag Heuer F1 because it's a quartz and I can't be bothered with setting the time and date on an automatic. I rarely think of rotating the watches and if one doesn't get any wrist time it's simply not right for me.

·

For me, it breaks down as follows, by occasion, and if more than one watch fits the bill, I choose at random:

Special (sentimental) occasions: Marc Ecko Oz Encore

Formal / Semi-Formal occasions: Marc Ecko Oz Encore, or Tissot Classic Dream

Social Semi-Dress (for example, church attendance): Tissot Classic Dream, or Stuhrling Original Concorso Raceway.

Business Semi-Dress (for example, every day at the office): Invicta Grand Diver, Invicta Sub-Aqua, Stuhrling Original Concorso Raceway, Tissot Classic Dream, Casio Duro.

Swimming: Casio Duro, Invicta Grand Diver, Invicta Sub-Aqua

Rough and Tumble Outdoors (for example, camping, or yard work): Casio SGW-100, or Casio Duro.

·

I actually just started tracking how often I wear each watch. It's the sort of nerdy stat I love. It'll show me if any of the watches are getting "too much" or "too little" writst time.

How I choose is mostly random, unless I know I'm doing something specific that day that requitres a particular trait.

·

Ok so wrist time is not really something I really consider. I am at 45 watches and I do like them all. Sometimes I pick a watch and then coordinate my clothes, sometimes the other way around, and sometimes not even thinking of wether or not they go together. Love having many watches and can't see setting a number limit on my collection.
